Hypoxia awareness and symptom dynamics under aviation-related simulated exposure.

INTRODUCTION: Hypoxia poses a significant risk in aviation and other safety-critical domains, yet individual awareness and perception of hypoxic states remain highly variable. This study investigated subjective symptom perception, continuous self-assessment, hypoxia recognition, objective performance, and physiological responses during experimentally induced hypoxia. METHODS: Twenty-three participants completed two experimental sessions in a within-subject design: a control condition and a hypoxia condition. Subjective symptoms were assessed using a post-exposure questionnaire, complemented b

Potential pathways for CO2 utilization in sustainable aviation fuel synthesis.

The development of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) is a must for the decarbonization of the aviation industry. This paper explores various pathways for SAF production, focusing on innovative catalytic processes for the utilization of CO2 as a potential feedstock. Key pathways analyzed include the Modified Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (MFTS), methanol synthesis, and subsequent transformations of methanol into hydrocarbons (MTH), aromatics (MTA) and olefin oligomerization. The potential of these processes is highlighted, alongside the challenges in catalyst development. The paper emphasizes the n

The Persistent Issue of Simulator Sickness in Naval Aviation Training.

Virtual simulations offer nearly unlimited training potential for naval aviation due to the wide array of scenarios that can be simulated in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective environment. This versatility has created substantial interest in using existing and emerging virtual technology to enhance training scenarios. However, the virtual simulations themselves may hinder training initiatives by inducing simulator sickness among the trainees, which is a series of symptoms similar to motion sickness that can arise from simulator use. Simulator sickness has been a problem for military aviation

Occupational Exposure to Chromium of Assembly Workers in Aviation Industries.

Aircraft are constructed by modules that are covered by a "primer" layer, which can often contain hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], known carcinogen to humans. While the occupational exposure to Cr(VI) during aircraft painting is ascertained, the exposure assessment of assembly workers (assemblers) requires investigations. Three biological monitoring campaigns (BM-I,II,III) were performed in an aviation industry, on homogeneous groups of assemblers (N = 43) and controls (N = 23), by measuring chromium concentrations in end-shift urine collected at the end of the working week and the chromium conce

A circadian rhythm in skill-based errors in aviation maintenance.

In workplaces where activity continues around the clock, human error has been observed to exhibit a circadian rhythm, with a characteristic peak in the early hours of the morning. Errors are commonly distinguished by the nature of the underlying cognitive failure, particularly the level of intentionality involved in the erroneous action. The Skill-Rule-Knowledge (SRK) framework of Rasmussen is used widely in the study of industrial errors and accidents. The SRK framework describes three fundamental types of error, according to whether behavior is under the control of practiced sensori-motor sk

Aviation-related respiratory gas disturbances affect dark adaptation: a reappraisal.

This study examined the time course of early scotopic threshold sensitivity during dark adaptation under mild to moderate hypoxia, moderate hypocapnia and hyperoxia, measuring detection time displacement relative to normoxia. Cone rod inflection and early rod adaptation were highlighted using progressively dimmer green flash stimuli. Early scotopic sensitivity was significantly delayed by hypoxia and hastened by hypocapnia and hyperoxia. Effects of respiratory disturbance on dark adaptation include temporal shifts of early scotopic sensitivity while human rod photoreceptors appear functionally

Carboxyhemoglobin and blood cyanide concentrations in relation to aviation accidents.

INTRODUCTION: It is important in aviation accident investigations to determine if a fire occurred during flight or after the crash and to establish the source(s) of the toxic gases. METHODS: Bio-specimens from aviation accident fatalities are submitted to CAMI for analyses. In blood, CO is analyzed as carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) and hydrogen cyanide as cyanide (CN-). Analytical data were stored in a database, and this database was searched for the period of 1990-2002 for the presence of COHb and CN in the submitted cases. RESULTS: Out of 5945 cases, there were 223 (4%) cases wherein COHb was >

Prevention of carbon monoxide exposure in general and recreational aviation.

Carbon monoxide exposure is an important public health issue that poses a significant, albeit uncommon risk in aviation. Exposure is most common in single engine piston-driven aircraft where air is passed over the exhaust manifold to serve as cabin heat. Effective primary prevention of this exposure is the regular inspection and maintenance of aircraft exhaust systems, as required by law. For situations at special risk should exposure occur, and where there is concern for the public safety, installation of active warning devices for CO intrusion into cockpits may improve secondary prevention.

Injury patterns in aviation-related fatalities. Implications for preventive strategies.

Autopsy data from individual aviation crashes have long been used in aviation safety research in the form of case reports and case series studies. Injuries sustained from aviation crashes, however, have not been well documented at a national level. This study examines the injury patterns for persons who died in aviation crashes in the United States and the implications for preventive strategies. Death certificate data for all aviation-related fatalities for the years 1980 (n = 1,543) and 1990 (n = 1.011) were obtained from the National Center for Health Statistics. The immediate cause of death

Changing trends in fatal spatial disorientation accidents in general aviation.

INTRODUCTION: Spatial disorientation (SD) is a well-known risk factor across aviation operations but is a particular risk within general aviation (GA). While previous work has examined historical rates of SD related accidents in GA, modern analyses of SD accidents that account for overall changes to the GA environment are limited. METHODS: The current analysis investigates recent trends from 2003 to 2021 in SD GA fatal accidents and compares these trends to historical analyses, while incorporating context about changes to the overall GA landscape. RESULTS: While fatal SD GA accidents rates a

Deficient Aeronautical Decision-Making Contributions to Fatal General Aviation Accidents.

INTRODUCTION: General aviation (GA), mainly comprised of light (≤12,500 lb) aircraft, maintains an inferior safety record compared with air carriers. To improve safety, aeronautical decision-making (ADM) practices have been advocated to GA pilots since 1991. Herein, we determined the extent to which GA pilots disregard such practices.METHODS: Fatal accidents (1991-2019) involving private pilots (PPLs) in single-engine airplanes were identified (N = 1481) from the National Transportation Safety Board AccessR database. Of these, deficient go/no-go and in-flight ADM-related mishaps were scored us
