An Analysis of Complications of Brachial and Axillary Artery Punctures.

To examine the complications of brachial and axillary artery punctures and the precautionary measures taken to lower their incidences. Retrospective analysis of 266 cases of brachial and axillary artery punctures was performed for angiography or angioplasty between January 2009 and December 2013 at the Department of Vascular Surgery, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University. Complications and their causes were assessed. Among all brachial artery punctures (n = 140), there were complications in 3.6 per cent of cases, including local hematoma in 1.4 per cent, pseudoaneurysm in 0.7 per cent, a…

[Arterial complications caused by using an axillary crutch].

BACKGROUND: Of all upper extremity emboli, up to twenty percent arise from an arterial, not a cardiac source. METHOD: We report about a patient with recurrent embolism, caused by an axillary crutch-induced aneurysm of the axillary artery. RESULT: After revascularisation by embolectomy and axillo-brachial vein graft bypass, the patient was free of symptoms. CONCLUSION: Angiography and duplex scanning were necessary for the correct diagnosis.

An unusual course and relations of the human axillary artery.

The axillary artery was studied by dissection of 50 human cadavers over a two-year period. Except in one instance, the course and relations of the axillary artery of all the other cadavers conformed to the normal description found in standard textbooks of Anatomy. In the exceptional cadaver, the axillary artery of the right side showed two unique features: (1) it pursued a tortuous course and made two sharp bends, and (2) it was situated superficial, rather than deep to, the pectoralis minor muscle. Its branches and relationship to the brachial plexus were also altered. On the left side, the a…

The early and mid-term fate of the axillary artery following axillary artery cut-down and cardiac catheterization in infants and young children.

OBJECTIVES: To study the early and mid-term vascular complications of axillary artery catheterization in children <2 years by clinical and ultrasound examination. BACKGROUND: Femoral arterial access for cardiac catheterization in young children is associated with significant morbidity. Early complications of axillary artery catheterization have been reported but no long-term vascular follow-up data are available. METHODS: Prospective case-control study using standard vascular ultrasound techniques to examine the upper limbs in study participants (n = 10). RESULTS: In total, 23% of axillary …

Axillary Artery Injury Encountered During Chest Wall Tumor Resection.

Axillary artery injuries are rare because of their anatomy but are sometimes fatal because of the difficulty of obtaining vascular integrity. We report a 50-year-old patient with an iatrogenic axillary arterial injury that occurred during the resection of a chest wall tumor. The injury occurred during an incision of the intercostal muscle along the superior margin of the second rib. Following primary hemostasis achieved by forceps and amputation of the pectoralis minor muscle, the injury site was exposed sufficiently and successfully repaired by a vascular surgeon. This successful case provide…

Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation via Direct Axillary Artery Cannulation.

Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is an effective means of support for patients awaiting cardiac or cardiopulmonary transplantation. Typically, peripheral cannulation via the femoral vessels is preferred. However, an alternative is use of the axillary or subclavian artery, which is typically performed via a graft. Here we present the case of a patient who required VA-ECMO for cardiogenic shock with severe pulmonary hypertension as a bridge to heart-lung transplantation. Initially cannulated via the femoral artery, he was converted to a direct axillary cannulation strat

Brachial and Axillary Artery Vascular Access for Endovascular Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular access is usually achieved through the common femoral artery due to its large size and accessibility. Access throug … AND METHODS: Data was obtained from patients receiving endovascular access through the brachial or axillary artery between 2005 and 2018. A total of 109 patients were included. Patient demographics including age, sex, medical history, smoking status, and actual medication were registered, as well as postoperative complications including hematoma, thrombosis, dis …

A Hybrid Approach to Radiation-Induced Axillary Artery Hemorrhage.

Axillary artery blowout is a rare life- and limb-threatening condition. The traditional surgical approach of ligation and extra-anatomic bypass is associated with a high morbidity and mortality. We present a case report of a 65-year-old male with axillary artery hemorrhage secondary to an irradiated squamous cell cancer. We propose a staged hybrid approach for the treatment of this unusual clinical entity consisting of emergent stent grafting followed by planned elective extra-anatomic bypass, debridement, and a course of specific antimicrobial therapy.

Delayed Axillary Artery Occlusion after Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty.

Axillary artery injury has been associated with shoulder dislocation and surgery. We describe a case of delayed axillary artery occlusion after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. The injury was confirmed by Doppler and angiography and was treated with angioplasty and stenting. Early recognition and treatment of this injury are mandatory for patients' recovery.
