Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus and allergic contact dermatitis: A significant association.

Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of unknown etiology. It mainly affects the anogenital area, while the extragenital involvement is uncommon. It manifests as pale, ivory-colored lesions and partially atrophic skin. We report a case of a woman presenting to our department with LSA lesions at the level of the armpit. Furthermore, the patient was allergic to nickel sulfate and balsam of Peru. We assume the presence of an association between nickel allergy and onset of LSA.

How to instruct patients sensitive to fragrances.

Patients who are sensitive to fragrances should either use fragrance-free cosmetics or undergo a repeat open application test to the cosmetic or perfume to determine sensitivity. Unusual reactions include systemic contact dermatitis due to balsam of Peru, benzyl alcohol, and menthol. Some responses involve pigmented eruptions due to phototoxic or photoallergic agents in perfumes and incense. Other reactions include consort dermatitis and reactions to toothpastes, gum and perfumes in paper products, sanitary napkins, ostomy pastes, and detergents.

Shoe contact dermatitis.

The incidence of contact allergy was studied in a series of 165 patients with eczematous dermatitis of the feet correlated clinically with shoe contact. Positive reactions to one or more substances were recorded in 108 patients (65.4%). Among the relevant sensitizers were chromium, paraphenylenediamine, paratertiary butylphenolformaldehyde resin and nickel, while the other allergens were benzocaine, neomycin, balsam of Peru, ethylenediamine and parabens. Allergic contact dermatitis of the feet can be prevented by recognition of the allergens responsible, control of hyperhidrosis and avoidance

The Effect of Atopy in the Prevalence of Contact Sensitization: The Experience of a Greek Referral Center.

Contact dermatitis is a well-known skin condition, which is related to stimuli and environmental exposure to chemicals, affecting all ages as well as both genders. In the present work, we attempt to investigate the patterns of contact sensitization, with respect to the personal history of atopy (AT), in Greece in a large number of allergens, using patch testing. The retrospective analysis included clinical routine data of 1978 patients collected from 2014 to 2016 in the Laboratory of Patch Testing, National Referral Centre of Occupational Dermatoses. Sensitization, in all cases, was tested wit

A retrospective study of patch test results from 163 patients with stasis dermatitis or leg ulcers. II. Retesting of 50 patients.

Retesting 50 patients with stasis dermatitis after a period of time (3-25 months) revealed significantly less positive patch test results (p less than 0.05). All procedures were, of course, standardized. The main reasons for this were elimination of the sensitization agents in the interim and testing with a less acute skin condition. Allergens that are difficult to avoid, such as the 'para' compounds and balsam of Peru and related substances, show a higher degree of persistence in subsequent patch testing.

[Investigation of contact allergies in 100 cases of ulcus cruris (author's transl)].

In a group of 100 patients with ulcus cruris, the incidence of contact allergies was determined. Patch tests were applied with 18 products that might have come into contact with the skin. These products comprised drugs and excipients (preservatives and ointment vehicles) potential ingredients of tapes or of elastic bandages. Peru balsam (14%), wool-wax alcohols (10%), Nestosyl owing to its para-aminobenzoate component (7%), neomycin (5%) and Thyme oil (5%) were the allergens most frequently encountered.

[Contact allergies in the elderly].

The percentage of seniors (> 65 years of age) in the general population continues to rise. Their sensitization profile may be influenced by lifelong work-related and nonwork-related exposures and comorbidities requiring local or systemic treatment. Recent analysis of the IVDK (Information Network of Departments of Dermatology) cohort concerning the most frequently recognized contact allergens in the age group above 65 (2009-2013: N = 14,841) revealed significant differences compared to the age group up to 65 years of age. The top 10 contact allergens recognized in individuals older than 65 yea

Contact dermatitis to fragrances.

2 groups of patients (1200 and 1500 respectively) were patch tested with different concentrations of perfume mix and fragrance raw materials. The study was to evaluate the incidence of contact dermatitis to fragrances in Roma, Italy, and the influence of limited variations in fragrance and perfume mix concentrations on patch test responses. The results showed that a decrease in the perfume mix concentration from 16% to 8% correlated with a decrease in the % of positive patients (from 5.2% to 3.6%). Variations in the concentration of fragrance raw materials did not influence the % of positive r

Systemic contact dermatitis.

Systemic contact dermatitis (SCD) describes a cutaneous eruption in response to systemic exposure to an allergen. The exact pathologic mechanism remains uncertain. The broad spectrum of presentations that are often nonspecific can make it difficult for the clinician to suspect this disease, but it is an important diagnosis to consider in cases of recalcitrant, widespread, or recurrent dermatitis, in which patch testing often reveals allergy to nickel or balsam of Peru. Diagnosis and appropriate management can be life-altering for affected patients. This article on SCD provides an overview of t

Human T cell response to CD1a and contact dermatitis allergens in botanical extracts and commercial skin care products.

During industrialization, humans have been exposed to increasing numbers of foreign chemicals. Failure of the immune system to tolerate drugs, cosmetics, and other skin products causes allergic contact dermatitis, a T cell-mediated disease with rising prevalence. Models of αβ T cell response emphasize T cell receptor (TCR) contact with peptide-MHC complexes, but this model cannot readily explain activation by most contact dermatitis allergens, which are nonpeptidic molecules. We tested whether CD1a, an abundant MHC I-like protein in human skin, mediates contact allergen recognition. Using CD1a

Contact dermatitis: facts and controversies.

The history of contact dermatitis (CD) is inseparable from the history of the patch test, and the patch test is inseparable from the pioneer in the field, Josef Jadassohn (1860-1936). Despite the fact that we have been diagnosing, treating, and investigating the condition for more than 100 years, there are still many unsolved questions and controversies, which show no signs of coming to an end in the foreseeable future. This contribution reviews and highlights some of the disagreements and discrepancies associated with CD. For example: • What is the real sensitizer in balsam of Peru, one of th
