BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We postulated that some abnormalities in cerebrovascular function after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) may involve underlying alterations in K(+) channel function. Thus, using pharmacological inhibitors, we assessed the influence of SAH on function of 2 types of K(+) channel in regulation of basilar artery diameter in vivo and membrane potential (E(m)) in vitro.
METHODS: Rats were injected with saline (control) or autologous blood (SAH) into the cisterna magna. Two days later, effects of vasoactive drugs on the basilar artery were examined with a cranial window preparat

An intense, low-frequency tone (about 30 Hz) modulates the sensitivity of the inner ear to high-frequency stimulation. This modulation is correlated with the displacement of the basilar membrane. The findings suggest that the modulation may also affect cochlear tuning. We have investigated modulation of cochlear tuning by low-frequency sound in the guinea pig. Applying indirect methods of measurement (narrow-band analysis of compound action potentials and compound-action-potential tuning curves), the results suggest a shift of the excitation pattern along the basilar membrane towards higher-fr…

The level-dependent component of the latency of human auditory brainstem responses (ABR) to tonebursts decreases by about 38% for every 20-dB increase in stimulus level over a wide range of both frequency and level [Neely, Norton, Gorga, and Jesteadt (1998). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 31, 87-97]. This level-dependence has now been simulated in an active, nonlinear, transmission-line model of cochlear mechanics combined with an adaptation stage. The micromechanics in this model are similar to previous models except that a dual role is proposed for the tectorial membrane (TM): (1) passive sharpening th

The discovery of active mechanisms in the cochlea and the efferent auditory pathways from the brain to the cochlea demonstrated the existence of a modulation of the auditory input in the central nervous system (CNS). Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are weak signals that can be recorded in the ear canal and are considered a byproduct of an active process from the outer hair cells (OHCs) to the basilar membrane. The efferent auditory system plays an inhibitory role on the activity of OHCs; its stimulation reduces auditory nerve response, basilar membrane motility and OAEs amplitude. Indirect stimul…

The problem of otosclerotic inner ear damage is considered on the basis of morphological findings. It is pointed out that the disease of the otic capsule certainly also affects the underlying sense organ. This arises through disturbance of the perilymphatic electrolytes, venous stasis and thus changes in the circulation, disturbed regulation of endolymph and, more rarely, the direct effect of the focus on the auditory nerve or calcification of the mobile membranes.

The ultrastructure of conjunctival melanocytic lesions in 49 patients was evaluated to find significant differences between benign and malignant cells. The patients studied included 9 with benign epithelial (racial) melanosis, 2 with pigmented squamous cell papillomas, 16 with conjunctival nevi, 18 with primary acquired melanosis, and 11 with invasive nodules of malignant melanoma. In benign epithelial melanosis, dendritic melanocytes were situated along the basement membrane region of the conjunctival epithelium, with one basilar dendritic melanocyte lodged among every five or six basilar ker

The aim of this study was to evaluate, in young volunteer subjects, the effects of salicylates on evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs), whic … e selectivity inhibits OHC motility and, in consequence, reduces the amplitude of the motion of the basilar membrane. According to these data it is very likely that the observed reduction in RM magnitude after salicylate administration is also the result of the decreased ability of the OHCs to contract and of the reduced basilar membrane motion. The results are co …

Cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is characterized by prolonged severe constriction of the basilar artery, which often leads to ischemic brain damage. Locally elevated concentrations of spasmogenic substances induce persistent depolarization of myocytes in the basilar artery, leading to continuous influx of calcium (Ca) through voltage-sensitive Ca channels and myocyte contraction. Potassium (K) channel openers may have therapeutic utility to oppose membrane depolarization, dilate the arteries, and reduce ischemia. Here, we examined the involvement of vascular Kv7 K channe

Measurements of motion of an in vitro preparation of the alligator lizard basilar papilla in response to sound demonstrate elliptical trajectories. These trajectories are consistent with the presence of both a translational and rotational mode of motion. The translational mode is independent of frequency, and the rotational mode has a displacement peak near 5 kHz. These measurements can be explained by a simple mechanical system in which the basilar papilla is supported asymmetrically on the basilar membrane. In a quantitative model, the translational admittance is compliant while the rotation…

Masking by harmonic complexes depends on the frequency content of the masker and its phase spectrum. Harmonic complexes created with negative Schroeder phases (component phases decreasing with increasing frequency) produce more masking than those with positive Schroeder phases (increasing phase) in humans, but not in birds. The masking differences in humans have been attributed to interactions between the masker phase spectrum and the phase characteristic of the basilar membrane. In birds, the similarity in masking by positive and negative Schroeder maskers, and reduced masking by cosine-phase…

Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common form of deafness, typically resulting from the loss of sensory cells on the basilar membrane, which cannot regenerate and thus lose sensitivity to sound vibrations. Here, we report a reconfigurable piezo-ionotropic polymer membrane engineered for biomimetic sustainable multi-resonance acoustic sensing, offering exceptional sensitivity (530 kPa-1) and broadband frequency discrimination (20 Hz to 3300 Hz) while remaining resistant to "dying". The acoustic sensing capability is driven by an ion hitching-in cage effect intrinsic to the ion gel combined…

In order to improve the prediction accuracy of the sound quality of vehicle interior noise, a novel sound quality prediction model was proposed based on the physiological response predicted metrics, i.e., loudness, sharpness, and roughness. First, a human-ear sound transmission model was constructed by combining the outer and middle ear finite element model with the cochlear transmission line model. This model converted external input noise into cochlear basilar membrane response. Second, the physiological perception models of loudness, sharpness, and roughness were constructed by transforming…

Level-dependent changes in temporal envelope fluctuations in speech and related changes in speech recognition may reveal effects of basilar-membrane nonlinearities. As a result of compression in the basilar-membrane response, the "effective" magnitude of envelope fluctuations may be reduced as speech level increases from lower level (more linear) to mid-level (more compressive) regions. With further increases to a more linear region, speech envelope fluctuations may become more pronounced. To assess these effects, recognition of consonants and key words in sentences was measured as a function

We present the case of a 57-year-old female with hypertension, current smoker status, and recent headaches. Imaging studies showed an unruptured 8-mm basilar apex wide neck aneurysm located 4 mm above posterior clinoid (Figure 1) with a 3-mm anterior communicant artery aneurysm. No contraindications were encountered for endovascular treatment, although after we evaluated endovascular and surgical options, surgical clipping was considered also a safe and favorable option based on anterior projection of aneurysm, height of the basilar artery bifurcation, small and elongated posterior communicant

Previous psychoacoustical and physiological studies indicate that the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR), a bilateral, sound-evoked reflex, may lead to improved sound intensity discrimination in background noise. The MOCR can decrease the range of basilar-membrane compression and can counteract effects of neural adaptation from background noise. However, the contribution of these processes to intensity discrimination is not well understood. This study examined the effect of ipsilateral, contralateral, and bilateral noise on the "mid-level hump." The mid-level hump refers to intensity discrimin
