What is Competition in STEM Classes? "It's Not Just the Curve".

The culture of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) is often cited as being competitive. This creates a driving force for attrition from these fields, especially for minoritized students. But what-according to students-defines competition in the STEM classroom environment? This study seeks to answer that question by examining the factors that students report as contributing to competition in STEM classrooms. To do this, we conducted semistructured interviews with 25 first-generation and racially minoritized students enrolled in an introductory biology course, and with experience i

Effects of psychological and social factors on organic disease: a critical assessment of research on coronary heart disease.

An extensive research literature in the behavioral sciences and medicine suggests that psychological and social factors may play a direct role in organic coronary artery disease (CAD) pathology. However, many in the medical and scientific community regard this evidence with skepticism. This chapter critically examines research on the impact of psychological and psychosocial factors on the development and outcome of coronary heart disease, with particular emphasis on studies employing verifiable outcomes of CAD morbidity or mortality. Five key variables identified as possible psychosocial risk …

Classifying strategy use in multiattribute subjective choice: Application to conjoint experiments in political science.

Conjoint experiments are extensively used across multiple disciplines to make inferences about preferences over multiattribute alternatives. Much previous research has analyzed the importance of attributes at the aggregate level. Here, we focus on understanding individual-level behavior and, specifically, on strategy use. We present a Bayesian cognitive model of strategy use that performs attribute weight inference (how important an attribute is), attribute level inference (which value of the attribute is favored), and latent-mixture inference to classify strategy use among well-established st

Citizen science approaches in the development of post-stroke physical activity interventions: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a major cause of disability globally, with high recurrence rates despite the implementation of secondary prevention strategies. Promoting physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviour are critical to mitigate these risks. Collaborative research approaches, including citizen science, offer promising methods for developing more effective and sustainable interventions by leveraging patient insights and lived experiences across different research stages. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review explored the application of citizen science approaches in developing interventions ta

Applying the Behavioural and Social Sciences Research (BSSR) Functional Framework to HIV Cure Research.

INTRODUCTION: The search for an HIV cure involves important behavioural and social processes that complement the domains of biomedicine. However, the field has yet to tap into the full potential of behavioural and social sciences research (BSSR). In this article, we apply Gaist and Stirratt's BSSR Functional Framework to the field of HIV cure research. DISCUSSION: The BSSR Functional Framework describes four key research domains: (1) basic BSSR (understanding basic behavioural and social factors), (2) elemental BSSR (advancing behavioural and social interventions), (3) supportive BSSR (streng

Developing a critical media research agenda for health psychology.

This article outlines reasons why psychologists should concern themselves with media processes, noting how media are central to contemporary life and heavily implicated in the construction of shared understandings of health. We contend that the present research focus is substantially medicalized, privileging the investigation and framing of certain topics, such as the portrayal of health professionals, medical practices, specific diseases and lifestyle-orientated interventions, and restricting attention to social determinants of health as appropriate topics for investigation. We propose an ext

Good science, poor visibility? Communicating behavioural nutrition and physical activity evidence in the algorithmic attention economy.

Behavioural nutrition and physical activity research has produced a strong and growing evidence base to inform prevention, treatment, and policy across a wide range of health outcomes. Yet the visibility of this evidence beyond academic audiences does not consistently reflect its scientific quality. Increasingly, dissemination occurs within digital environments shaped by algorithms that prioritise engagement, simplicity, novelty, and emotional salience over nuance and uncertainty. This creates a mismatch between the complexity that characterises behaviour change science and the attention-drive

A collaborative approach to advancing research and training in Public Health Data Science-challenges, opportunities, and lessons learnt.

The unprecedented availability of increasingly complex, voluminous, and multi-dimensional data as well as the emergence of data science as an evolving field provide ideal opportunities to address the multi-faceted public health challenges faced by low and middle income countries (LMIC), especially those in sub-Saharan Africa. However, there is a severe lack of well-trained data scientists and home-grown educational programs to enable context-specific training. The lack of human capacity and resources for public health data analysis as well as the dire need to use modern technology for better u

Empathy and Coping in Allied Health Sciences: Gender Patterns.

This study aimed to examine the patterns of associations between empathy and coping among undergraduate men and women studying at Allied Health Sciences. This cross-sectional study is part of a larger longitudinal study conducted in an Allied Health Sciences School. Participants were 183 undergraduate students from 12 training programs (e.g., Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy). Their mean age was 20.79 years (SD = 2.64), and they were in their first, third, and fourth years of school. The instruments were the Brief-COPE and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). Empathy co

Tackling unmanaged oropharyngeal dysphagia in primary care: a behavioural science realist review of interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) is difficulty manipulating a food bolus from the mouth to the throat. Up to 70% of older adults develop OD; however, it is unmanaged in primary care, leading to avoidable hospitalisation. OBJECTIVE: This behavioural science realist review aimed to develop programme theories to describe how interventions facilitate primary care healthcare professionals (HCPs) to proactively manage OD. METHODS: We developed initial programme theories (IPTs) inductively using the expertise of stakeholders and deductively using the theoretical domains framework (TDF). D

Space and cognition: the measurement of behavioral functions during a 6-day space mission.

We measured nonspecific (attention, mental flexibility, psychomotor speed) and visuospatial cognitive processing in a single case study during a 6-d visit on the Russian orbital complex MIR, using computer-based psychometric tasks. Reaction times and accuracy scores showed only minor, nonsignificant changes between preflight, flight, and postflight assessments. These results suggest that several behavioral functions, among them complex visuospatial processing skills, remain essentially intact on short space visits, provided that the performing subject experiences no symptoms of space motion si

Conceptual Understanding and Conceptual Change Through Human AI Collaboration in Science Education: An Integrated Conceptual Framework from a Systematic Literature Review.

Human Artificial Intelligence (Human AI) Collaboration in science education is gaining momentum and more research is required on how it can facilitate students' conceptual understanding and conceptual change. Currently, most studies on AI in science education investigate the use of one particular tool and its effects on learning. However, it is the learning mechanisms that are triggered by these tools that help develop knowledge. This systematic literature review was conducted by performing a systematic search within the Scopus database which was last updated on 15 June 2026. In line with the
