Delirium and Behavioral Symptoms in Persons With Dementia at Hospital Admission: Mediating Factors.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalized persons with dementia are at risk of delirium with behavioral symptoms, predisposing them to a higher rate of complications and caregiver distress. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between delirium severity in patients with dementia upon admission to the hospital and the manifestation of behavioral symptoms, and to evaluate the mediating effects of cognitive and physical function, pain, medications, and restraints. METHODS: This descriptive study used baseline data from 455 older adults with dementia enrolled in a cluster randomized clinical t…

The Impact of Cognitive and Behavioral Symptoms on ALS Patients and Their Caregivers.

Previously thought to be a pure motor disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is now established as multisystem neurodegenerative disorder that lies on a continuum with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Cognitive and behavioral symptoms primarily extend to executive function, personality, social conduct, and emotion processing. The assessment and management of cognitive and behavioral symptoms is complicated as they must be differentiated from psychological responses to a terminal diagnosis and progressive physical impairment. This is made more difficult by the limited number of studies inve…

Behavioral and emotional symptoms and primary headaches in children: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate behavioral and emotional symptoms in a community-based sample of children as a function of headache status and of … y associated with abnormal scores. CONCLUSIONS: Migraine and TTH are significantly associated with behavioral symptoms in several domains, and headache frequency affects the association. Internalizing symptoms are common in children with headaches, while externalizing symptoms (e.g. rule-breaking and aggressivity) are not significantly more common than in controls.

Manic symptoms and behavioral dysregulation in youth with velocardiofacial syndrome (22q11.2 deletion syndrome).

Mania and bipolar disorder have been reported in adolescents and adults with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS; also known as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome). Children with VCFS have a high prevalence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which may constitute a risk factor for the eventual development of bipolar disorder in this population. Therefore, we sought to determine whether children with VCFS exhibit more manic symptoms than community controls that also may have learning disorders and ADHD. The study population consisted of 86 children with VCFS and 36 community controls from ag

Behavioral, psychological and physical symptoms in group homes for older adults with dementia.

BACKGROUND: Despite the recent dissemination of group homes in Japan for older adults with dementia, the behavioral and psychological features of the residents remain unknown. To clarify the association of such features with the levels of difficulty encountered by caregivers in coping with these symptoms, we have conducted a survey to compare the frequencies of the symptoms among group homes, nursing homes and a long-term care hospital. METHODS: Five hundred and eighty-six older adults aged 65 years or more were sampled. Data were consecutively collected from questionnaires given to the careg

The efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy on the core symptoms of bulimia nervosa.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is widely regarded as the treatment of choice for bulimia nervosa (BN), with previous reviews of the CBT outcome literature claiming an approximate 40%-50% recovery rate. Most of these reviews have focused on reductions of binge eating and purging; however, the cognitive model of BN that underlies the CBT approach identifies three additional symptoms as central to the disorder: restrictive eating, concerns with shape and weight, and self-esteem. The purpose of this review was to determine the effect of CBT on the five core symptoms of BN, particularly those n

Effect of tacrine on behavioral symptoms in Alzheimer's disease: an open-label study.

We conducted an open-label study designed to assess the effects of tacrine on behavioral changes in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Twenty-eight subjects completed a baseline evaluation and at least one assessment during treatment. Behavioral symptoms and cognitive function were assessed with the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), respectively. The mean NPI score at the maximum individual dose of tacrine attained was markedly decreased (behavior improved, compared to baseline). Symptoms of anxiety, apathy, hallucinations, aberrant motor behaviors…
