The Effect of Sudden Death Bereavement on the Risk for Suicide.

Background: Bereavement after a sudden death is associated with psychiatric sequelae including suicidal ideation and behavior. However, there is still uncertainty about whether bereavement due to suicide increases the risk for suicidal behavior more than bereavement due to other causes of death does. Aims: This study aimed to evaluate suicidal risk among sudden death-bereaved participants and to identify risk factors for suicidality that may be over-represented in those who are suicide-bereaved. Method: In total, 180 adult participants, half of whom had experienced the sudden death of a first-…

The Spiritual and Theological Challenges of Stillbirth for Bereaved Parents.

Stillbirth is recognized as one of the most challenging experiences of bereavement raising significant spiritual and theological questions. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with bereaved parents cared for in a tertiary maternity hospital to explore the spiritual impact of stillbirth. Data were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Stillbirth was identified as an immensely challenging spiritual and personal experience with enduring impact for parents. The superordinate themes to emerge were searching for meaning, maintaining hope and questioning core beli…

The push and pull of grief: Approach and avoidance in bereavement.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Prolonged Grief (PG) is recognized as a post-bereavement syndrome that is associated with significant impairment. Although approach and avoidance tendencies have both been hypothesized to play key roles in maintaining PG symptoms, understanding of these relationships has been limited by a reliance on self-report methodology. This study applies an experimental paradigm to simultaneously investigate the relationship between PG severity and approach-avoidance behavioral tendencies. METHODS: Fifty-five bereaved individuals with and without PG completed a behavioral meas…

Influences on grief among parentally bereaved adults.

Although the parent-child relationship is significant throughout life, many changes occur as children grow, particularly during young adulthood. Parental loss and resulting grief during adulthood is likely influenced by many variables, including age, gender, relationship quality, and sex roles. In the present study, parentally bereaved adults completed measures assessing parental involvement, personal grief and adjustment, and sex role preferences. Analyses of covariance indicated that gender of the bereaved child was significant in predicting some aspects of grief, wherein females were more s

The risk assessment of bereavement in a palliative care setting.

An effective bereavement risk assessment document used in a palliative care setting was identified which could ensure bereavement support for those in need, be it a family or carer group. The nursing team were used as assessors with a system to indicate carers' and relatives' immediate need following the death of a patient. The aim of this bereavement risk assessment system was to lessen the possible long-term effects of unresolved grief for family and carers of patients who died within a hospice setting. The assessment document is a useful education tool for nurses, allied support professiona…

Grief as a crisis: psychotherapeutic interventions with elderly bereaved.

This paper describes a psychotherapeutic intervention of grief in elderly subjects. The technique rapidly and efficiently facilitated grief work. The paper further illustrates the feasibility and usefulness of psychotherapy with the aged, contrary to earlier reports that the modality was not an effective treatment for geriatric patients.

A Combined Approach to Understanding Grief: Integration of the Two-Track Model of Bereavement (TTMB) and the Dual Process Model of Coping With Bereavement (DPM).

The Two-Track Model of Bereavement (TTMB) and the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement (DPM) are two central models in the field of thanatology, offering theoretical frameworks for understanding how individuals cope with loss. While the two models share several fundamental principles - most notably the conceptualization of grief as a bidimensional process involving the interplay between mourning and functional adaptation to life after loss - they differ in their components, underlying theoretical assumptions, and clinical emphases, yielding complementary strengths that together can en…

Employment and health among older bereaved men in the normative aging study: one year and three years following a bereavement event.

Research has indicated that the negative effects of bereavement on health among elderly men occur within the first six to twelve months following a bereavement event while other studies indicate that the death of a loved one can have long-term effects on social functioning and mental health (Arbuckle & DeVries, 1995; Vinick, 1983a). However, employment has been found to buffer the strain produced by stressful life events. The purpose of this study was to examine the differential effects of employment on physical and mental health between elderly men bereaved for one year and elderly men bereav…

Risk factors for poor bereavement outcomes and the support needs of adult bereaved refugees within the psychosocial-cultural concept of personhood: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The majority of refugees are exposed to trauma and multiple deaths and often face difficulties in coping with the death of someone close to them. This review aimed to systematically synthesize evidence regarding the risk factors associated with poor bereavement outcomes and the support needs of refugees during bereavement, using the ring theory of personhood as a guiding framework to inform service provision and policy development. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using five citation databases (PsycINFO, CINAHL, SocINDEX, MEDLINE, and Web of Science), along with gray lit…

The desirability of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) clinician-led bereavement screening and support program for family members of ICU Decedents (ICU Bereave).

PURPOSE: Many bereaved family members (FMs) of intensive care unit decedents experience symptoms of complicated grief (CG) or social distress, but there is no standard screening or follow-up for these individuals. We determined the desirability and need for an intensive care unit-based bereavement screening and support program for these FMs. METHODS: We surveyed bereaved FMs to measure symptoms of CG, prolonged grief disorder, and social difficulties and the desire for support; and staff physicians and nurses at 2 teaching hospitals in Toronto, Canada, to determine comfort and interest in pro…

Desire thinking as a cognitive mechanism of yearning after bereavement.

BACKGROUND: Yearning is the hallmark of grief and prolonged grief disorder, but its psychological underpinnings are poorly understood. We aimed to address this by building on the phenomenological similarities with craving and investigating the role of desire thinking, a voluntary cognitive process central to activating craving. OBJECTIVE: Determining the factorial and psychometric properties of the Oxford Grief Desire Thinking scale (OG-DT) and testing whether desire thinking dimensions prospectively predict proximity-seeking, and whether this association is mediated by subsequent yearning.

Stress Resilience and Risk of Psychiatric Disorders After Childhood Bereavement.

IMPORTANCE: Childhood bereavement increases the risk of common psychiatric disorders later in life. However, the role of stress resilience in this association remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether stress resilience mediates the association between childhood bereavement and psychiatric disorder risk in adulthood. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Three matched cohort studies were performed using data recorded in the Swedish Military Conscription Register. Individuals with childhood loss of either a parent or a sibling (19 162 participants), a parent (16 247 participants), or a …

Associations between bereavement and (hypo-)mania: An updated mini-review.

Loss and bereavement may precede mood episodes in bipolar disorders (BD). When a loved one dies, this is a stressful life event with a negative connotation that can trigger the onset of symptoms of both polarities (depressive or manic) of BD or lead to the emergence of the first mood episodes. Even though the relationships between death and depression are better known in the literature and clinical practice, the associations between bereavement and (hypo-)mania are less clear. To date, information on "funeral mania", also called "grief mania" or "bereavement mania", is rather limited, remainin…
