Blowfly, Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is a problematic synanthropic insect pest, a vector of microbial pathogens, and the causal agent of secondary myiasis. Fungal biopesticides are considered eco-friendly tools, alternative to synthetic pesticides, for the control of arthropod pests; however, to date, little is known about their bioactivity against blowflies. In this study, we assessed the insecticidal activity of three well-known entomopathogenic fungi, Beauveria bassiana, Beauveria pseudobassiana and Akanthomyces muscarius against L. sericata. In addition, we tested powdered c

The continued success of malaria control efforts requires the development, study and implementation of new technologies that circumvent insecticide resistance. We previously demonstrated that fungal pathogens can provide an effective delivery system for mosquitocidal or malariacidal biomolecules. Here we compared genes from arthropod predators encoding insect specific sodium, potassium and calcium channel blockers for their ability to improve the efficacy of Metarhizium against wild-caught, insecticide-resistant anophelines. Toxins expressed under control of a hemolymph-specific promoter incre

Verticillium wilt, caused by Verticillium dahliae Kleb., is a destructive vascular disease that is difficult to control using chemical fungicides and remains a major challenge in plant disease management. Microbial biocontrol represents a sustainable alternative, and the identification of highly antagonistic strains against V. dahliae is of considerable importance. In this study, a strain of Talaromyces purpureogenus TS, which demonstrated strong antagonistic and mycoparasitic activity against V. dahliae, was isolated from soil. Its cell-free supernatant inhibited the growth of V. dahliae by d

Floral diseases of macadamia, such as raceme blight, are among the main limiting factors for crop production, and the low availability of registered products for phytosanitary management further aggravates this challenge. In this context, biocontrol agents emerge as a sustainable and effective alternative for integrated disease management. This study aimed to select antagonistic bacteria for the control of raceme blight in macadamia, caused by Cladosporium xanthochromaticum. For this purpose, bacteria were isolated from macadamia racemes, identified, and tested against the phytopathogen in bot

To exploit superior microbial strains for the biocontrol of wheat crown rot, we employed high antagonistic activity and strong colonization ability as dual criteria to screen strains from the culture collection of the Agricultural Microbiology Innovation Center of Henan Province. We comprehensively evaluated the candidate strain for both biocontrol efficacy and plant growth-promoting traits, and subsequently identified it through integrated morphological, molecular biological, and genomic analyses. The results showed that Paenibacillus polymyxa YB-393 exhibited the strongest root colonization

Botrytis cinerea, a fungal pathogen causing Botrytis blight, significantly impacts greenhouse crop management owing to its broad host range and infection capabilities at various growth stages. Traditional control methods, primarily reliant on fungicides, are challenged by environmental concerns and the rise of fungicide-resistant strains. This study investigates the use of beneficial Pseudomonas bacteria as a sustainable alternative. We hypothesized that specific Pseudomonas consortia could provide more effective biocontrol of B. cinerea than individual strains. Our research investigated five

BACKGROUND: The application of biocontrol agents offers a promising strategy for managing pear anthracnose, yet their efficacy is often limited by unstable colonization on fruit surfaces.
RESULTS: Here, we isolated Paenibacillus polymyxa JF_P68, which exhibits strong inhibitory activity against Colletotrichum fructicola. To enhance its environmental tolerance, we developed a hyaluronic acid (HA)-functionalized nanoarmor using a layer-by-layer coating technique. This nanoarmor significantly improved the JF_P68's resistance to ultraviolet radiation and oxidative stress. In vivo trials demonstra

Phytopathogenic and food spoilage microorganisms are major contributors to postharvest crop losses. Some species of fungi are able to produce mycotoxins, posing health risks to both humans and animals. Control methods based on synthetic fungicides raised environmental and health concerns and led to the development of fungicide-resistant pathogens. As a result, biological control has gained momentum as an eco-friendly alternative. Microbial biocontrol agents (BCAs) are increasingly being commercialized, with recent research exploring volatile-mediated interactions between BCAs, pathogens, and t

Fusarium wilt, caused by (Fusarium udum Butler), is a significant threat to pigeonpea crops worldwide, leading to substantial yield losses. Traditional approaches like fungicides and resistant cultivars are not practical due to the persistent and evolving nature of the pathogen. Therefore, native biocontrol agents are considered to be more sustainable solution, as they adapt well to local soil and climatic conditions. In this study, five isolates of F. udum infecting pigeonpea were isolated from various cultivars and characterized morphologically and molecularly. The isolate from the ICP 8858

Biological disease control of soilborne plant diseases has traditionally employed the biopesticide approach whereby single strains or strain mixtures are introduced into production systems through inundative/inoculative release. The approach has significant barriers that have long been recognized, including a generally limited spectrum of target pathogens for any given biocontrol agent and inadequate colonization of the host rhizosphere, which can plague progress in the utilization of this resource in commercial field-based crop production systems. Thus, although potential exists, this model h

Plant-parasitic nematodes cause major yield and economic losses and remain difficult to manage because of their soil-borne nature, persistent biology, and broad host range. Conventional nematicides provide rapid suppression but face regulatory, safety, and environmental concerns, while cultural practices, biological control, and host resistance are constrained by variable field performance, durability, or breeding limitations. Molecular biopesticides, including double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), recombinant proteins/peptides, and characterized secondary metabolites, offer mechanism-based targeting o

BACKGROUND: Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP), a chronic, recurrent pustular dermatosis associated with erythema, scales, and sterile pustules on the palms and soles, is commonly encountered in dermatology clinics. Whether PPP is a variant of psoriasis or a distinct condition is still debated. Although biological agents have been successfully used to treat moderate-to-severe psoriasis, existing literature on PPP is limited to case reports or small case series. The lack of well-documented clinical studies makes it difficult to select the ideal treatment for this condition. This review aims to discu

Mosquitoes are the vectors responsible for transmitting serious and life-threatening diseases such as malaria, dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and lymphatic filariasis. Very few effective vaccines or drugs have been developed so far to prevent or treat these diseases, highlighting a need for vector control. This paper presents a comprehensive technology overview of patent documents disclosing biological agents for mosquito control. The patent analysis revealed that comparable number of patent documents were filed in two technology categories: non-recombinant agents and genetically modified (
