Bioinspired water collection methods to supplement water supply.

Fresh water sustains human life and is vital for human health. Water scarcity affects more than 40% of the global population and is projected to rise. For some of the poorest countries, 1 in 10 people do not have access to safe and easily accessible water sources. Water consumption by man continues to grow with increasing population. Furthermore, population growth and unsafe industrial practices, as well as climate change, have put strain on 'clean' water supply in many parts of the world, including the Americas. Current supply of fresh water needs to be supplemented to meet future needs. Livi

Experimental and modeling study on pull-off force of fibrillar adhesives.

In recent years, the use of isotropic bionic fibrillar adhesives (BFA) in space non-cooperative target capture missions has become a research hotspot in the aerospace field. However, accurately evaluating the adhesion performance of these materials remains a critical challenge. To bridge this gap, we experimentally investigate the detachment behavior of two representative BFA types: mushroom-shaped fibrillar adhesives and flat-shaped fibrillar adhesives. The experimental results reveal that the critical detachment force (i.e. pull-off force) is significantly influenced by preload, detachment v

Nature-Inspired Bioelectric Stimuli-Based Electroactive Polymeric Therapeutics Technology for Osteoarthritis Treatment─A Review.

The self-healing capacity of severely damaged articular cartilage is inherently limited due to weak cellular signaling, low cell turnover, poor extracellular matrix synthesis, and a lack of vascularization. Such damage to cartilage can lead to severe pain and the progression of osteoarthritis, significantly impacting patients' physical and mental well-being. Current surgical and nonsurgical interventions for repairing and regenerating cartilage tissue have shown inadequate long-term efficacy. Recently, the intrinsic electrical properties of bone tissue inspired researchers to focus on designin

Design and performance study of biomimetic bone scaffolds based on the fusion of triply periodic minimal surfaces.

At present, the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) with bone scaffolds has become a research hotspot. However, comparative studies on the performance of different fusion bone scaffolds are relatively scarce. This study adopted a method with a constant porosity of 70%. By adjusting the TPMS function equation, the three basic structures of D, G, and P were fused in pairs to form six fusion structures: D-G, G-D, D-P, P-D, G-P, and P-G. The simulations were performed using Ti6Al4V as the scaffold material, and through quasi-static compression experiments, we investigated the mec

Low-velocity impact resistance of bio-inspired interlayer hybrid composite laminates with a gradient waviness structure.

This study explores a bio-inspired design methodology for interlayer layups in hybrid carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites to enhance impact resistance. An impact-resistant and damage tolerance gradient waviness structure is discovered in the rapid mandible strike of trap-jaw ants. Inspired by this natural design, a gradient waviness structure was incorporated into fiber interlayer formation to improve impact resistance. Bio-inspired interlayer hybrid laminates, combining unidirectional fibers with multiple woven fabric arrangements, were fabricated using a mold press forming technique.

Hierarchical Assemblies of Collagen-Mimetic Peptides: From a Fundamental Understanding to Developing Biomaterials.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in animals and crucial for maintaining the structural and functional integrity of the extracellular matrix. Its primary structure consists of ∼300 repeats of the Xaa-Yaa-Gly triplet, where Xaa and Yaa are often proline (Pro) and 4-(R)-hydroxyproline (Hyp) residues, respectively. Collagen is fundamentally a right-handed triple helix that undergoes self-association, forming complex supramolecular structures in the body. Despite extensive study, the detailed mechanisms behind its higher-order assembly remain unclear due to challenges in its purification and t

Influence of matrix inelasticity on the mechanical properties of bioinspired composites.

Lightweight structures require materials with superior mechanical properties, prompting engineers to investigate composite materials. Inspired by nature's ingenuity, especially the nacre found in seashells, and the hierarchical structures observed in bone and teeth, which exhibit remarkable strength, stiffness, and toughness, this study investigates the role of inelasticity on the mechanical properties of bioinspired composite materials. In contrast to purely elastic materials, which exhibit reversible stress-strain behaviour and fail suddenly upon reaching their yield point, our study integra

Interdisciplinary-Inspired Smart Antibacterial Materials and Their Biomedical Applications.

The discovery of antibiotics has saved millions of lives, but the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has become another problem in modern medicine. To avoid or reduce the overuse of antibiotics in antibacterial treatments, stimuli-responsive materials, pathogen-targeting nanoparticles, immunogenic nano-toxoids, and biomimetic materials are being developed to make sterilization better and smarter than conventional therapies. The common goal of smart antibacterial materials (SAMs) is to increase the antibiotic efficacy or function via an antibacterial mechanism different from that of ant…

Biomimetic and Gel-Mediated Tissue Adhesive Structures for Skin Conformal and Multifunctional Bioelectronics.

Epidermal electrodes are essential for wearable bioelectronics in health monitoring and rehabilitation. However, current options are limited: adhesives irritate skin, hydrogels dry out, ultrathin films cannot deliver high currents, and sharp microstructures concentrate current, risking burns. Achieving repeatable gel-mediated adhesion with uniform current distribution on curved, moving skin remains a major challenge. In this study, we present biomimetic electrodes using carbon nanotube-silicone elastomer (CNT-elastomer) composites patterned with octopus-inspired suction units and polyethylenim

A Biomimetic Study of the Behavior of N-Cyclopropyl-Based Single Electron Transfer Probes in the Context of Monoamine Oxidase-Catalyzed Oxidations.

Monoamine oxidase-A and -B are important flavoenzymes involved in the oxidative metabolism of various biogenic amines. Mechanisms including polar/nucleophilic, hydride transfer, and single electron transfer (SET) have been proposed for the initial steps of the catalytic mechanism. The most compelling evidence for the latter comes from the observed inhibitory behavior of N-cyclopropyl compounds. Enzyme inactivation presumably occurs when the primary radical portion of the distonic radical cation, resulting from cyclopropyl ring opening, couples to the enzyme. Previously, we hypothesized that th

Probing and modeling cell-cell communication in 2D biomimetic tissues.

In tissues, cells in direct physical contact with each other can exchange ions or molecules via protein clusters called gap junctions, that form channels across the membranes of adjacent cells. Here, we use a simplified biomimetic approach, coupled with theoretical modeling, to unravel the physical mechanisms controlling such transport. Tissues are mimicked with 2D hexagonal networks of monodisperse aqueous droplets connected by lipid membranes called droplet interface bilayers (DIBs) decorated with α-hemolysin (αHL) transmembrane proteins forming nanopores through heptamerization in the membr

Biomimetic Air-Lifted Organ Culture System with a Protective Coverage Membrane for Full-Thickness Corneal Preservation.

Effective storage and utilization of limited donor corneal resources are in high demand to alleviate the shortage of donor corneal tissue. Here, we designed a static air-lifted organ culture system equipped with a protective coverage membrane, namely, an air-lifted OC-P system, to provide a biomimetic physiological environment for full-thickness corneal preservation. The air-lifted OC-P system features a unique collagen-based protective coverage membrane that can offer a moist, oxygen-rich environment for corneal epithelium, produce an appropriate intraocular pressure onto the cornea by gravit

Biomimetic Microparticles with Myocardial and Endocardial Integration for Drug Toxicity Studies.

Hydrogel microparticles are versatile tools for organ modeling due to their simplicity, uniformity, and customizability, yet their limited physiological relevance constrains practical applications. In this study, a heart microparticle model that incorporates endocardial and myocardial structures and functions was developed. Hydrogel microparticles with rough surfaces, embedded with cardiomyocytes, were created using a custom-designed microfluidic device. Surface modification with matrigel enhanced the adhesion and connectivity of endothelial cells, enabling the formation of a densely packed en

Multimodal additive manufacturing of biomimetic tympanic membrane replacements with near tissue-like acousto-mechanical and biological properties.

The three additive manufacturing techniques fused deposition modeling, gel plotting and melt electrowriting were combined to develop a mimicry of the tympanic membrane (TM) to tackle large TM perforations caused by chronic otitis media. The mimicry of the collagen fiber orientation of the TM was accompanied by a study of multiple funnel-shaped mimics of the TM morphology, resulting in mechanical and acoustic properties similar to those of the eardrum. For the different 3D printing techniques used, the process parameters were optimized to allow reasonable microfiber arrangements within the melt

Robust biomimetic-structural superhydrophobic surface on aluminum alloy.

The following facile approach has been developed to prepare a biomimetic-structural superhydrophobic surface with high stabilities and strong resistances on 2024 Al alloy that are robust to harsh environments. First, a simple hydrothermal treatment in a La(NO3)3 aqueous solution was used to fabricate ginkgo-leaf like nanostructures, resulting in a superhydrophilic surface on 2024 Al. Then a low-surface-energy compound, dodecafluoroheptyl-propyl-trimethoxylsilane (Actyflon-G502), was used to modify the superhydrophilic 2024 Al, changing the surface character from superhydrophilicity to superhyd

Non-peptidyl insulin mimetics as a potential antidiabetic agent.

Insulin has an important role in the maintenance of blood sugar. It is the only available therapeutic agent for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus and there is a dire need for an oral substitute. Different categories of compounds including mono and di substituted benzoquinones, vanadium based compounds and natural products have been reported to cause insulin-like effects either by increasing phosphorylation of insulin receptor (IR) or inhibiting the protein tyrosine phosphatases. This review summarizes the development of various insulin mimetics with special emphasis on their structure-

3D printed biomimetic blade stirrer for expedient estimation of the oral bioavailability of contaminants of emerging concern.

A 3D printed biomimetic blade-based microextraction device with covalently attached phosphatidylcholine (PC) is proposed as a proof-of-concept platform for the in vitro estimation of the oral bioavailability of plastic-borne organic substances with distinct physicochemical properties. The experimental conditions were designed to resemble the murine small-intestinal brush-border membrane by approximating its PC mass-to-volume ratio. The biomimetic extraction efficiency (E, %), defined as the percentage of the analyte partitioned into the PC-functionalized 3D-printed surface, was investigated as

Biomimetic Targeted Drug Delivery for Liver Failure in Abdominal Sepsis: Focus on Autologous Erythrocyte Ghosts.

Sepsis-induced liver failure remains a serious and often under-recognized complication of abdominal sepsis. Clinical reports suggest that liver dysfunction develops in a substantial proportion of these patients, and once failure ensues, mortality rises sharply. Despite progress in antimicrobial therapy and critical care support, there is still no therapy that directly halts or reliably reverses septic liver injury. Systemic drug administration frequently underperforms in this setting. Hepatic drug accumulation becomes unpredictable, pharmacokinetics shift, and immune dysregulation further comp
