Ticks feeding on humans: a review of records on human-biting Ixodoidea with special reference to pathogen transmission.

In this article, literature records of argasid and ixodid ticks feeding on humans worldwide are provided in view of increased awareness of risks associated with tick bites. Ticks can cause paralyses, toxicoses, allergic reactions and are vectors of a broad range of viral, rickettsial, bacterial and protozoan pathogens. Approximately 12 argasid species (Argas and Ornithodos) are frequently found attached to humans who intrude into tick-infested caves and burrows. Over 20 ixodid tick species are often found on humans exposed to infested vegetation: four of these are Amblyomma species, 7 Dermacen

Molecular evidence for transmission of human T-lymphotropic virus type II infection by a human bite.

Investigation of a human T-lymphotropic virus type II (HTLV-II) infection in a female Australian blood donor identified a human bite as the likely mode of transmission, confirmed by nucleotide sequencing of the proviral tax/rex from both donor and contact. We believe this to be the first report of the transmission of an HTLV by a human bite.

Relapsing Fever Group Borreliae in Human-Biting Soft Ticks, Brazil.

We conducted a molecular survey for Borrelia spp. in Ornithodoros ticks previously reported as biting humans. We collected specimens in natural ecosystems and inside human dwellings in 6 states in Brazil. Phylogenetic analyses unveiled the occurrence of 4 putatively new species of relapsing fever group borreliae.

Developmental and age-related changes in sensorimotor regulation of biting maneuvers in humans.

Previous studies indicated distinct differences in biting and chewing behaviors between children and adults. However, these studies used different methodologies and failed to study age-related changes in the fine motor control of biting from childhood to adulthood. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate age-related changes in oral fine motor control in healthy children in comparison to adults. Sixty-five healthy children (3-17 years) were equally divided into five age-groups based on their dental eruption stages. Each participant was asked to hold half a peanut rested on a force transducer

[Cerebral thrombophlebitis: complication of frontotemporoparietal cellulitis in a child victim of human bite].

Cerebral thrombophlebitis is a rare but severe disease whose underestimated frequency is increasingly recognized among children and, unlike adults, management is controversial. We report the case of a 12-year old child bitten by a friend at the level of the scalp, in the frontotemporal region of the head. This bite evolved due to the occurrence of a swelling evoking a frontotemporoparietal cellulitis complicated by cerebral thrombophlebitis, diagnosed based on the clinical feature and imaging. The patient was admitted in our hospital in a state of conscience disorder. Anticoagulant and etiolog

Necrotizing fasciitis due to Streptococcus mitis caused by accidental human bite.

Human bite wounds are more prone to infection than animal bites, which may cause necrotizing soft tissue infections such as myositis, fasciitis. Both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms may be responsible, including Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Peptostreptococcus spp. Necrotizing fasciitis is characterized by serious tissue destruction and systemic toxicity with high morbidity and mortality. We report a patient with Streptococcus mitis associated necrotizing fasciitis on the upper extremity resulting from an accidental human bite, which caused nearly fatal infection. Prophylacti

Human Tick-Borne Encephalitis and Characterization of Virus from Biting Tick.

We report a case of human tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in which the TBE virus was isolated from the biting tick. Viral growth and sequence were characterized and compared with those of a reference strain. Virus isolation from ticks from patients with TBE may offer a new approach for studies of epidemiology and pathogenicity.

Tick bites on humans in the agricultural and recreational areas in south-eastern Poland.

The investigations were conducted in the Lublin province (south-eastern Poland) in areas of high agricultural and recreational value. Among the 418 patients admitted to medical clinics due to arthropod bites in the years 2003-2005, 184 people (44%) had been bitten by ticks. As shown by the research, high-risk groups include people whose stay in tick habitats is connected with their occupational work (54.5%) as well as recreation and tourism (45.5%). As many as 78.7% of the patients were attacked by Ixodes ricinus ticks in forests, and much fewer (31.3%) in other habitats located in urban and r

[Human rabies encephalitis by a vampire bat bite in an urban area of Colombia].

Human rabies encephalitis by a vampire bat bite in an urban area of Colombia A case of rabies encephalitis is presented in a teenaged male, which developed four months after a bat bite in the urban area of Floridablanca, Santander Province, Colombia. The complex clinical manifestations prevented the confirmation of an antemortem diagnosis, principally because of the lengthy incubation period and the absence of other similar urban cases. Despite application of several therapies, including the Milwaukee protocol, the patient died 19 days after hospital admission. The autopsy revealed a necrotic,

Nonmicrosurgical reconstruction of the auricle after traumatic amputation due to human bite.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic auricular amputation due to human bite is not a common event. Nonetheless, it constitutes a difficult challenge for the reconstructive surgeon. Microsurgery can be performed in some cases, but most microsurgical techniques are complex and their use can only be advocated in specialized centers. Replantation of a severed ear without microsurgery can be a safe alternative as long as a proper technique is selected. METHODS: We present two cases, one of a partial and one of a total traumatic auricular amputation, both caused by human bites, that were successfully managed in o

Staphylococcus intermedius: clinical presentation of a new human dog bite pathogen.

Staphylococcus intermedius is a Gram-positive, coagulase-positive coccus that can be distinguished from Staphylococcus aureus by routine microbiological testing. Whereas S intermedius is recognized as flora and pathogen of dogs, it has never been isolated from human infections. We hypothesized that S intermedius may cause human dog bite wound infections and that it has been previously misidentified as S aureus. Fourteen isolates from clinically infected dog bite wounds that were originally identified as S aureus were subjected to further testing; three (22%) were found to be S intermedius. The

IxsS7: A novel biomarker for Ixodes scapularis tick bite exposure in humans.

Ixodes scapularis is a primary vector of several important tick-borne pathogens including Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative bacterial genospecies complex of Lyme disease, Babesia microti, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia miyamotoi, Ehrlichia muris eauclarensis, and Powassan virus. Salivary compounds secreted by I. scapularis during blood feeding are immunogenic and can elicit robust antibody responses in humans which can potentially be leveraged as surrogate markers of prior tick bite exposure. In this study, we investigate the potential of a tick secreted salivary serine prote

Reverse Posterior Interosseous Artery Flap for Human Bite Injury to the Hand.

Bite injuries frequently occur on human hands. Human bite injuries to the hand may lead to an infection because of limited soft tissue protection and wound contamination. However, no studies have reported severe bite injuries on hands treated by flaps. We report a case of an 80-year-old woman diagnosed with a major neurocognitive disorder. The patient accidentally had a self-bite injury accompanied with an open metacarpal fracture. Debridement and fixation of the first metacarpal fracture were performed. Afterward, skin necrosis occurred gradually on the dorsum of the hand. Therefore, a revers

Human sound systems are shaped by post-Neolithic changes in bite configuration.

Linguistic diversity, now and in the past, is widely regarded to be independent of biological changes that took place after the emergence of Homo sapiens We show converging evidence from paleoanthropology, speech biomechanics, ethnography, and historical linguistics that labiodental sounds (such as "f" and "v") were innovated after the Neolithic. Changes in diet attributable to food-processing technologies modified the human bite from an edge-to-edge configuration to one that preserves adolescent overbite and overjet into adulthood. This change favored the emergence and maintenance of labioden

A Human Bite on the Scrotum: Case Report and Review of Management in the Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Human bites involving the genitalia rarely present to the emergency department (ED). They have the potential to cause life-threatening secondary infections as well as serious physical and functional damage. CASE REPORT: We report a case of an adult male who sustained a human bite to the scrotum, resulting in a ragged laceration on the anterior scrotum, with a devascularized flap and necrotic edges overlying the wound. WHY SHOULD AN EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN BE AWARE OF THIS?: Human bites to the scrotum are rare and, hence, the experience of emergency physicians treating patients present

Comparison between Human and Bite-Based Methods of Estimating Caloric Intake.

BACKGROUND: Current methods of self-monitoring kilocalorie intake outside of laboratory/clinical settings suffer from a systematic underreporting bias. Recent efforts to make kilocalorie information available have improved these methods somewhat, but it may be possible to derive an objective and more accurate measure of kilocalorie intake from bite count. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to develop and examine the accuracy of an individualized bite-based measure of kilocalorie intake and to compare that measure to participant estimates of kilocalorie intake. It was hypothesized that kilocalorie i

Auricular reconstruction after human bite amputation using the Baudet technique.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to present a case of a successful re-implantation of an amputated auricle following a human bite using the Baudet technique. METHODS: Case report and review of the literature. RESULTS: The patient had a very satisfactory postoperative result in terms of appearance and function of the reattached auricle. Cartilage loss was minimal. CONCLUSION: Reattachment of an amputated auricle as a composite graft following a traumatic human bite is feasible. The Baudet technique is a simple alternative that avoids the complexity of microsurgical anastomosis while improving upo
