Fusion of microplastics into the mussel byssus.

Microplastics have been found to adhere to the surface of specific tissues or organs other than being ingested by the organisms. To further test the hypothesis that microplastics might get into specific body parts of organisms, mussel byssus was chosen as a target subject in the present study. In the field investigation, microplastics were found in mussel byssus, and the abundance of microplastics was 0.85-1.02 items/individual mussel and 3.69-9.16 items/g byssus, but the location of microplastics in byssus was not easily determined. Therefore, we simulated environmental conditions in the labo

Effects on feeding rate and biomarker responses of marine mussels experimentally exposed to propranolol and acetaminophen.

Environmental risk assessments of human pharmaceuticals and other 'emerging contaminants' should integrate both population-relevant endpoints and biomarkers of potential modes of action in a range of species. Adult Mytilus galloprovincialis were exposed to the beta-adrenergic receptor blocker propranolol or to the anti-inflammatory drug acetaminophen (paracetamol), both commonly used therapeutic drugs present in aquatic ecosystems. Mussels were exposed under semi-static conditions for 10 days to either acetaminophen (CAS number 103-90-2; mean measured concentrations 23 and 403 microg/L) or pro

Cadmium bioaccumulation and detoxification in the gill and digestive gland of the Antarctic bivalve Laternula elliptica.

Exposure to a sublethal concentration of cadmium (Cd; 50 microg L(-1)) resulted in significantly increased Cd concentrations in the gill and digestive gland of the Antarctic bivalve Laternula elliptica. Continuous accumulation of Cd in the two organs during the 14-day exposure period was associated with sequestration of Cd to both the soluble cytosolic and insoluble particulate cell fractions. However, the contribution of each cell fraction to Cd sequestration differed between the two organs; in the gill, a larger portion of Cd was associated with the insoluble fraction, while in the digestive

A procedure for large-scale purification of domoic acid from toxic blue mussels (Mytilus edulis).

Pure domoic acid is required for use in research to investigate the biological effects of this new shellfish toxin. It may also prove to be a useful tool in studies exploring the basis of Alzheimer's disease. In this paper we describe a procedure which is effective in obtaining adequate quantities of pure domoic acid from blue mussel (Mytilus edulis). The procedure involves tissue homogenization, treatment of homogenate with chloroform and methanol, and separation of different phases with the addition of water. The aqueous-methanolic phase (upper layer) contains water soluble components includ

Ocular and extraocular expression of opsins reveals evolutionary trends underlying visual and non-visual functions in bivalves (Pteriomorphia).

Opsin proteins are central to photoreception and have diversified extensively to support both visual and non-visual functions in animals. While the molecular conservation is striking, the evolutionary pathways that shaped opsin diversity, particularly in relation to visual and extraocular roles, remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we examined opsin expression in Pteriomorphia, a diverse group of mostly sessile marine bivalves with multiple photoreceptor systems and ecologies. We generated transcriptomes for 12 species, including eyed and eyeless adults, and analysed published RNA-se

In situ evidence of tiered adaptations buffering a chemosynthetic clam holobiont against environmental sulfide fluctuations.

Deep-sea holobionts adapt to extreme environmental fluctuations, but the molecular mechanisms underlying resilience remain poorly understood. We investigated the vesicomyid clam Archivesica marissinica and its sulfur-oxidizing symbionts during sulfide shortage via in situ transplant experiments at the Haima cold seep. Transplanting clams to sulfide-depleted conditions (moderate at HM-3 and severe at HM-2) revealed distinct response patterns of host-symbiont interaction. Symbionts may mitigate sulfide loss by shifting from sulfide oxidation to thiosulfate oxidation, supported by thiosulfate gen

Microplastic abundance and characteristics in bivalves from Tam Giang-Cau Hai and O Loan Lagoons, coastal regions in Central Vietnam: Implication on human health.

Four common bivalves, including white clam (Meretrix lusoria), lined clam (Paratapes undulatus), oysters (Crassostrea gigas), and green mussels (Perna viridi), which are commonly consumed in Central Vietnam, were collected from Tam Giang-Cau Hai and O Loan Coastal Lagoons. The samples were investigated for the presence of microplastics (MPs) in their tissues. The average number of MPs determined in white clams, lined clams, oysters, and green mussels in Central Vietnam varies from 0.3 to 0.9 per g-ww and from 0.9 to 5.6 per individual. Fibers, fragments, and pellets were found with various pro

Unravelling Hypoxia Tolerance: Transcriptomic and Metabolic Insights From Lucinoma capensis in an Oxygen Minimum Zone.

The lucinid clam Lucinoma capensis thrives at the oxygen minimum zone margins in the Benguela Upwelling System, where oxygen levels fluctuate dramatically. Understanding its adaptation to such extreme conditions provides key insights into survival strategies under fluctuating oxygen availability. We investigated the transcriptomic and metabolomic responses of L. capensis under normoxia, hypoxia, and recovery, focusing on the gills and digestive gland. Our findings highlight distinct organ-specific responses, with the gills showing strong transcriptional changes to oxygen fluctuations, in contr

Mussel- and nacre-inspired dual-bionic alginate-based hydrogel coating with multi-matrix applicability, high separation stability and antifouling performance for oil/water separation.

Natural hydrogel-modified porous matrices with superwetting interfaces are ideal for oil/water separation. In this study, inspired by two marine organisms, a novel hydrogel coating with multi-matrix suitability, high oil/water separation capability and antifouling properties was developed. Specifically, inspired by mussel byssus, hydrogel coating was successfully deposited on porous matrix surface based on the introduction of tannic acid (TA). Moreover, inspired by the "brick and mortar" microstructure of Pinctada nacre, silica particles were in-situ synthesized in the sodium alginate (SA)/Ca2

Microplastic pollution in wild and aquacultured Mediterranean mussels from the Sea of Marmara: Abundance, characteristics, and health risk estimations.

Microplastic (MP) pollution raises urgent concerns about the environmental well-being and the safety of the food supply for humans. Mussels are essential filter-feeding organisms that may be highly susceptible to MPs uptake due to their global distribution and sedentary lifestyle. There is also a knowledge gap regarding MP levels in commercially-farmed and wild-sourced mussels for human consumption, creating gaps in risk identification for food safety. This study aims to fill this gap in understanding by (a) investigating the presence and abundance of MPs in both wild and aquacultured mussels

Digestion behavior of a polysaccharide from Cyclina sinensis: An explanation for the discrepancy in its immunostimulatory activities in vitro and in vivo.

Although numerous polysaccharides have demonstrated potential immunostimulatory activities in in vitro models, only a few of them successfully stimulate the immune system in vivo. In order to explore the possible reasons for the activity loss of polysaccharides in in vivo models, the immunostimulatory activities in vitro and in vivo and the digestion behavior of a polysaccharide from Cyclina sinensis (CSP) were investigated in the present study. CSP showed obvious immunostimulatory activity in a RAW 264.7 cell model. In in vitro experiment, CSP did not exhibit cytotoxicity at concentrations of

Bio-inspired conductive adhesive based on calcium-free alginate hydrogels for bioelectronic interfaces.

Electrode impedance is one of the greatest challenges facing neural interfacing medical devices and the use of electrical stimulation-based therapies in the fields of neurology and regenerative medicine. Maximizing contact between electronics and tissue would allow for more accurate recordings of neural activity and to stimulate with less power in implantable devices as electric signals could be more precisely transferred by a stable interfacial area. Neural environments, inherently wet and ion-rich, present a unique challenge for traditional conductive adhesives. As such, we look to marine mu

First subcellular localization of the amnesic shellfish toxin, domoic acid, in bivalve tissues: Deciphering the physiological mechanisms involved in its long-retention in the king scallop Pecten maximus.

Domoic acid (DA), the phycotoxin responsible for amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP), is an excitatory amino acid naturally produced by at least twenty-eight species of the bloom-forming marine diatoms Pseudo-nitzschia spp. Suspension feeders, such as bivalve mollusks, can accumulate and lengthy retain high amounts of DA in their tissues, threatening human health and leading to extensive-prolonged fishery closures, and severe economic losses. This is particularly problematic for the king scallop Pecten maximus, which retains high burdens of DA from months to years compared to other fast-depurato

A systematic review and meta-analysis indicates a substantial burden of human noroviruses in shellfish worldwide, with GII.4 and GII.2 being the predominant genotypes.

Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) have been found as the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis outbreaks in all age groups and are significantly correlated with the consumption of shellfish. In this study, the contamination of HuNoVs in shellfish was estimated through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Studies on the contamination of HuNoVs in shellfish were searched from PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library from January 2000 to August 2021. A total of 75 studies were included, and the pooled HuNoVs prevalence in shellfish was 29% (95% CI: 23-35) worldwide. As revealed by the res

Immuno-Enriched Microspheres - Magnetic Blade Spray-Tandem Mass Spectrometry for Domoic Acid in Mussels.

Paramagnetic microspheres can be used in planar array fluorescence immunoassays for single or multiplex screening of food contaminants. However, no confirmation of the molecular identity is obtained. Coated blade spray (CBS) is a direct ionization mass spectrometry (MS) technique, and when combined with triple quadrupole MS/MS, it allows for rapid confirmation of food contaminants. The lack of chromatography in CBS, though, compromises the specificity of the measurement for unequivocal identification of contaminants, based on the European Union (EU) regulation. Therefore, a rapid and easy-to-u
