Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) comprise a group of infectious diseases caused by a wide range of pathogens transmitted by arthropod vectors. Clinical signs commonly involve symptoms such as fever, anorexia, weight loss, blood disorders, hepatosplenomegaly, and others that can lead to death in dogs with comorbidities. Some pathogens responsible for CVBDs constitute a serious threat to human health due to their zoonotic transmission. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of zoonotic vector-borne diseases (Rickettsia rickettsii, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Ehrlichia canis, Bartonella

Transmission mode is a key factor that influences host–parasite coevolution. Vector-borne pathogens are among the most important disease agents for humans and wildlife due to their broad distribution, high diversity, prevalence and lethality. They comprise some of the most important and widespread human pathogens, such as yellow fever, leishmania and malaria. Vector-borne parasites (in this review, those transmitted by blood-feeding Diptera) follow unique transmission routes towards their vertebrate hosts. Consequently, each part of this tri-partite (i.e. parasite, vector and host) interaction

BACKGROUND: The implementation of nucleic acid-based tests for blood donor screening has improved the safety of the blood supply; however, the increasing number of emerging pathogen tests is burdensome. Development of multiplex testing platforms that allow simultaneous screening for different pathogens is a potential solution.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The TessArray resequencing microarray is a platform that allows multiplex detection and identification of 97 different blood-borne pathogens in one single test. The objective was to evaluate the lowest concentration detected in blood or plasma,…

Transfusion of blood products carries the risk of pathogen transmission, despite careful donor selection and screening tests. This is due to viral transmission from window-period donations, the emergence of new pathogens such as variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, for which routine screening tests are not yet available, and to bacterial contamination. Techniques have been developed to inactivate pathogens in both fresh frozen plasma and platelet concentrates. The relative benefits to the recipient, and the ease of incorporation into blood component processing are considered for the technologies

BACKGROUND: Ticks are hematophagous arthropods responsible for maintenance and transmission of several pathogens of veterinary and medical importance. Current knowledge on species diversity and pathogens transmitted by ticks infesting camels in Nigeria is limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to unravel the status of ticks and tick-borne pathogens of camels in Nigeria.
METHODS: Blood samples (n = 176) and adult ticks (n = 593) were collected from one-humped camels (Camelus dromedarius) of both sexes in three locations (Kano, Jigawa and Sokoto states) in north-western Nigeria and scree

Exposure to blood-borne pathogens from sharp injuries continue to pose a significant risk to healthcare workers (HCW). The number of sharps injuries sustained by HCW is still unclear, primarily due to under-reporting of events. Healthcare professionals are at risk of sustaining such injuries from hollow-bore needles. Sharps injuries are associated with risk of infection with blood-borne pathogens such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) hepatitis C virus (HCV) and other live organisms. Here we are reporting a case of an adverse reaction in a HCW due to an accidental …

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne zoonotic diseases are a concerning issue in Europe. Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) have been reported in several countries with a large impact on public health; other emerging pathogens, such as Rickettsiales, and mosquito-borne flaviviruses have been increasingly reported. All these pathogens are linked to wild ungulates playing roles as tick feeders, spreaders, and sentinels for pathogen circulation. This study evaluated the prevalence of TBEV, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Rickettsia spp., Ehrlichia spp., and Coxiella spp. by biomolecular s

Canine infection by vector-borne hemoparasites is frequent in tropical and sub-tropical areas where exposure to hematophageous ectoparasites is intensive. A reverse line blot (RLB) assay was designed to improve the simultaneous detection of all named canine piroplasm species combined with other vector-borne pathogens of dogs including Ehrlichia canis, Hepatozoon canis and Leishmania infantum common in the Mediterranean basin. Blood samples of 110 dogs from Spain (n=21), Portugal (n=14) and Israel (n=75) were analyzed. The study evaluated 2 groups of dogs, 49 dogs with piroplasm infection detec

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne pathogens pose a significant threat to both human health and blood safety. The primary mosquito-borne viruses that present this threat are Zika virus, Chikungunya virus, and Dengue virus. At present, there are limited efficacious vaccines or therapeutic drugs for the prevention and treatment of these viral infections. Blood donors can remain asymptomatically infected and unfortunately, screening for these three viruses in Chinese blood donors are not mandatory, leaving the residual risk to transfusion recipients uncertain.
OBJECTIVE: To address this, we developed a

Efforts to reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted infectious diseases began more than 4 decades ago with testing donated blood for syphilis. During the subsequent 4 decades, the number of recognized blood-borne transmissible agents and new laboratory tests has proliferated to a logistical breaking point. Further, the number of "emerging agents" which might enter the donor population is increasing continuously. In the search for an alternative to the laboratory testing strategy, pathogen-reduction technologies have emerged as the most promising. The model for this paradigm is pasteurization

CONTEXT: Pathogen inactivation provides a proactive approach to cleansing the blood supply. In the plasma fractionation and manufacturing industry, pathogen inactivation technologies have been successfully implemented resulting in no transmission of human immunodeficiency, hepatitis C, or hepatitis B viruses by US-licensed plasma derivatives since 1985. However, these technologies cannot be used to pathogen inactivate cellular blood components. Although current blood donor screening and disease testing has drastically reduced the incidence of transfusion-transmitted diseases, there still looms

Transfusion of plasma can lead to adverse reactions or events. Immune-mediated reactions are most common--these include allergic and anaphylactic reactions, transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) and haemolysis. They can range in severity from mild to fatal. Fluid overload and citrate toxicity can occur after rapid or massive transfusion. In developed countries, microbial transmission rates are low because of donor selection and testing. Pathogen reduction processes can be applied to either single-unit components (methylene blue) or plasma pools (solvent-detergent). They have the unwant

Babesia microti-infected blood was stored at room temperature (approximately 25 C) or refrigerated (4 C) for 30 days. To assess viability of the parasites after storage at these 2 temperatures, a 0.25-ml aliquot was inoculated into each of 2 hamsters in 2 separate experiments at days 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 25, and 30. Blood films were prepared and examined weekly for the presence of parasites from all hamsters. Of hamsters inoculated with blood held at room temperature, only those inoculated at day 3 became positive, whereas 4/4 hamsters inoculated with refrigerated blood on day 17 became paras

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) have always been one of the major threats to public health. Although the implementation of mandatory testing for 4 classical transfusion-transmitted infectious-human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and syphilis-has reduced the transfusion risk of these pathogens, the potential threat of various EID agents and their constantly evolving variants to blood safety in China is not fully understood. This review presents 9 representative EID agents that are autochthonous and epidemic nationally or regionally in China. The epidemiologic

Canine (K9) units are essential in law enforcement and military operations; they are often at higher risk of vector-borne infections due to their working and kennel environments. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of vector-borne pathogens, including Babesia sp. and Mycoplasma spp., in military/police K9 dogs which visited the Adan veterinary hospital in Baghdad/Iraq in 2016-2017. 61 blood samples were collected on Whatman FTA cards and sent to the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria where they were tested with specific PCRs to get a better understanding about epid
