Methylnaltrexone reduced body weight gain in ob/ob mice.

OBJECTIVE: Opioids may function to regulate food intake and body weight, an activity that could be predominantly centrally mediated. In this study, the authors evaluated the effects of a peripherally acting opioid receptor antagonist, methylnaltrexone, on weight changes in adult obese ob/ob mice. RESULTS: After a 12-day treatment with naloxone 0.3 mg/kg, weight was reduced from 63.7 +/- 1.1 g in the control group to 59.2 +/- 0.9 g in the naloxone group (p < 0.05). After a 12-day treatment with methylnaltrexone 3.0 mg/kg, weight increase completely ceased. The body weight was 63.9 +/- 1.0 g in

Complementary therapies for reducing body weight: a systematic review.

The prevalence of obesity is increasing at an alarming rate and a plethora of complementary therapies are on offer claiming effectiveness for reducing body weight. The aim of this systematic review is to critically assess the evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews of complementary therapies for reducing body weight. Literature searches were conducted on Medline, Embase, Amed, and the Cochrane Library until January 2004. Hand-searches of relevant medical journals and bibliographies of identified articles were conducted. There were no restrictions regarding the

Body mass index, weight, and oral contraceptive failure risk.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effect of body mass index (BMI) and weight on risk of pregnancy while using oral contraceptives (OCs). METHODS: We conducted a case-control study of 248 health maintenance organization enrollees who became pregnant while using OCs between 1998 and 2001 and 533 age-matched enrollees who were nonpregnant OC users during the same period. Using logistic regression we calculated adjusted odds ratios (ORs) to estimate the risk of pregnancy according to BMI and weight quartile. RESULTS: Among all OC users, when compared with women having a BMI of 27.3 or less, the risk of

Experimental trypanosomiasis in Yankasa ewes: the body weight response.

Sleeping sickness (African Trypanosomasis) is an anthropozoonosis transmitted primarily by the tsetse fly. It is associated with a host of clinical indices ranging from fever, aneamia and anorexia to reproductive failures in man and his domestic animals. The main objective of this study is to appraise the responsiveness of the body weight as a clinical indicator of sleeping sickness in experimentally infected Yankasa ewes. Twelve mature Yankasa sheep (6 infected and 6 control ewes) were used in this study. Weekly body weights and daily rectal temperature were taken while blood samples for haem

Photoperiodic programming of body weight through the neuroendocrine hypothalamus.

The photoperiodic mammal undergoes quite remarkable changes in physiology as part of its natural adaptations to seasonal fluctuations in the environment. Changes in energy balance and body weight are among these adaptations. In some seasonal mammals, such as the Siberian hamster (Phodopus sungorus), these changes in body weight have been explored in detail, and there is evidence for tightly controlled systems of energy balance that are coordinated by photoperiod acting via the temporal pattern of melatonin secretion from the pineal gland. The pathways and systems involved appear to be quite di

Intestinal dimensions of mice divergently selected for body weight.

BACKGROUND: Selection for body weight provides important animal models for studying mechanisms of growth regulation. This study evaluated growth responses of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) to long-term selection of mice for high (H line) or low (L line) 8-week body weight as compared with random-bred controls (C line). METHODS: Weights and dimensions of the various parts of the GIT were recorded from 8-month-old mice. For light microscopic stereological analyses, samples were taken from eight equidistant locations covering the whole jejunum/ileum. Vertical sections were used for estimation

Body weight distribution of US patients with myasthenia gravis.

OBJECTIVE: Several novel therapies have been approved for treatment of generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG). The dosing requirements of certain therapies (efgartigimod intravenous, nipocalimab, ravulizumab, rozanolixizumab, zilucoplan) are based on patient's body weight. To determine costs of weight-based gMG treatments to payers, accurate assessment of the body weight distribution of patients with MG is required. However, little is known about these patients' weight profile. The current study aims to provide robust weight data in multiple cohorts of patients with MG and elucidate the cost of g

Adjusting body weight for edema in severely burned patients.

Weight loss is difficult to quantify in critically ill burn patients, as the presence of edema can mask changes in dry body weight. We sought to estimate dry body weight using measured weights adjusted for reported extremity edema. We evaluated patients with at least 20% total body surface area (TBSA) burns admitted to our intensive care unit over a 3½-year period. Body weights were collected for this analysis from admission to the time of a recorded dry weight after wound healing. Extremity edema was collected at the time of each weight measurement and was categorized into three groups: (1) n

Changes in Body Weight Before and After Kidney Donation.

BACKGROUND: Living kidney donors remain at low risk of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), but the risk for obese and overweight donors is increased. The Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) clinical guideline recommends that overweight and obese patients pursue weight loss before donation and maintain a healthy post-donation weight. OBJECTIVE: To determine the trajectory of weight changes before and after living kidney donation. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: The Living Kidney Donor program in the Champlain Local Health Integration Network at The Ottawa Hospital in O

Microgravity-induced ocular changes are related to body weight.

On Earth, tissue weight generates compressive forces that press on body structures and act on the walls of vessels throughout the body. In microgravity, tissues no longer have weight, and tissue compressive forces are lost, suggesting that individuals who weigh more may show greater effects from microgravity exposure. One unique effect of long-duration microgravity exposure is spaceflight-associated neuroocular syndrome (SANS), which can present with globe flattening, choroidal folds, optic disk edema, and a hyperopic visual shift. To determine whether weight or other anthropometric measures a

Adolescent preferences and reactions to language about body weight.

Over 30% of youth and adolescents have overweight or obesity, and health care providers are increasingly discussing weight-based health with these patients. Stigmatizing language in provider-patient communication about obesity is well documented and could be particularly detrimental to youth and adolescents. Although some research has examined preferences for weight-based terminology among adults, no studies have addressed these issues in youth populations. This study represents a preliminary and systematic investigation of weight-based language preferences among adolescents with overweight an

[Etiological and exacerbation factors for COPD. Body weight loss].

Hunger or malnutrition is not only a historical issue but also a current problem worldwide. Biological responses to hunger are evolutionary prepared in our body, including energy generation by degradation of body proteins. Extreme weight loss (malnutrition) can cause air space enlargement in human and rodents. However, the changes in rodents could be reversible, since refeeding could repair the pathology. On the other hand, weight loss is a common feature in patients with more severe COPD. Complex factors, such as increased energy consumption, decreased food uptake by low grade inflammation, s

Utility assessment of body contouring after massive weight loss.

BACKGROUND: The number of surgical procedures performed for obesity and massive weight loss (MWL) is increasing. The authors set out to quantify the health state utility assessment of living with MWL that can occur after such procedures. METHODS: Utility assessments using the visual analog scale (VAS), time trade-off (TTO), and standard gamble (SG) were used to obtain utilities for MWL, monocular blindness, and binocular blindness from a sample of the general population and medical students. RESULTS: All the measures for MWL of the 100 volunteers (VAS, 0.79 ± 0.13; TTO, 0.89 ± 0.12; SG, 0.89

Neonatal programming of body weight regulation and energetic metabolism.

Programming is an epigenetic phenomena by which nutritional, hormonal, physical psychological and other stressful events acting in a critical period of life, such as gestation and lactation, modifies in a prolonged way certain physiological functions. This process was preserved by natural selection as an important adaptive tool for survival of organisms living in nutritional impaired areas. So, malnutrition during gestation and lactation turns on different genes that provide the organism with a thrifty phenotype. In the case of an abundant supply of nutrients after this period, those organisms

Single-staged total body lift after massive weight loss.

This is a retrospective clinical report of a single-staged total body lift in 8 massive weight loss patients. While the combination of circumferential abdominoplasty, a modified lower body lift, and medial thighplasty adequately treats the lower torso and thighs, the residual skin laxity in the upper torso and breasts leaves an incomplete result. Hence, a 2-stage total body lift was designed. The second stage, called the upper body lift, removes epigastric and midback rolls of skin, adjusts the inframammary fold, and reshapes the breast or corrects gynecomastia, leaving behind a near circumfer

Treadmill training with partial body weight support after stroke.

Treadmill therapy with partial BWS is a promising new approach to improve gait ability after stroke. This task-specific approach enables nonambulatory patients the repetitive practice of complex gait cycles instead of single-limb gait-preparatory maneuvers. Patients walk more symmetrically with less spasticity and better cardiovascular efficiency on the treadmill than with floor walking. Several controlled, clinical studies have shown the potential of treadmill training as a therapeutic intervention for nonambulatory patients with chronic stroke-related hemiplegia. Furthermore, controlled tria
