Nutritional Status of Maintenance Dialysis Patients: Low Lean Body Mass Index and Obesity Are Common, Protein-Energy Wasting Is Uncommon.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Maintenance dialysis patients are at increased risk of abnormal nutritional status due to numerous causative factors, both nutritional and non-nutritional. The present study assessed the current prevalence of protein-energy wasting, low lean body mass index and obesity in maintenance dialysis patients, and compared different methods of nutritional assessment. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study conducted in 2014 at Roskilde Hospital, Denmark, we performed anthropometry (body weight, skinfolds, mid-arm, waist, and hip circumferences), and determined plasma albumin and norm

Clinical interventions to break the obesity and cancer link: a narrative review.

Excess body weight is a significant risk factor for the development and recurrence of many types of cancer. Patients with a history or current diagnosis of cancer who are overweight or have obesity have an increased risk of cancer treatment-related morbidity, recurrence, and decreased quality of life. Weight loss and maintenance of a healthy body weight may reduce cancer morbidity and recurrence in cancer survivors. While guidelines for cancer survivorship elaborate sufficiently on lifestyle interventions, little guidance is provided when considering additional therapies like anti-obesity phar

The determinants of elevated total plasma cholesterol levels in cardiac transplant recipients administered low dose cyclosporine for immunosuppression.

Elevated total plasma cholesterol level is a frequent finding after cardiac transplantation. To identify risk factors for the development of hypercholesterolemic states, we applied multivariate statistics in a logistic and linear manner. Six-month posttransplantation levels of total plasma cholesterol in 57 adult heart recipients were available for analysis. Maintenance immunosuppression was carried out with either cyclosporine and azathioprine or both agents plus low-dose steroids. Total plasma cholesterol levels were dichotomized for the logistic analysis (1) by the age- and sex-matched 75th

Predictors of long term weight loss maintenance in patients at high risk of type 2 diabetes participating in a lifestyle intervention program in primary health care: The DE-PLAN study.

Lifestyle interventions in type 2 diabetes (DM2) prevention implementation studies can be effective and lasting. Long-term weight loss maintenance enhances the intervention effect through a significant decrease in diabetes incidence over time. Our objective was to identify factors predicting long-term successful weight reduction maintenance achieved during a DM2 prevention program in patients with high DM2 risk in primary health care. Study participants (n = 263), middle-aged, slightly obese with baseline increased DM2 risk (Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC)>14), but no diabetes were invi

Effects of rumination and acceptance on body dissatisfaction in binge eating disorder.

Overvaluation of shape and weight and the corresponding body dissatisfaction are a maintenance factor for the psychopathology of binge eating disorder (BED). Evidence suggests potential benefits of various emotion regulation (ER) strategies in the modification of body dissatisfaction. Therefore, in the present study body dissatisfaction was experimentally induced in women with BED (n=30) using model pictures. Then, participants were instructed to either ruminate on present emotions and thoughts or accept whatever thoughts and feelings come up. Body dissatisfaction and mood were assessed prior

Optimal Thermal Control with Sufficient Nutrition May Reduce the Incidence of Neonatal Jaundice by Preventing Body-Weight Loss Among Non-Low Birth Weight Infants Not Admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal jaundice is strongly attributable to excess body-weight loss as a result of insufficient calorific intake. OBJECTIVES: To examine the incidence of neonatal jaundice (defined by use of phototherapy) and body-weight loss, as well as their association, among neonates under optimal thermal control with sufficient nutrition, a local protocol for temperature and nutritional regulation. METHODS: We retrospectively identified a cohort of 10,544 neonates (birth weight ≥2,500 g) placed in thermo-controlled incubators for 2 h immediately after birth. Neonates were fed with 5% gluco

Daily nutrient intake represents a modifiable determinant of nutritional status in chronic haemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: In maintenance haemodialysis patients, daily food intake is changeable; however, its relationship with nutritional status is unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the isolated, long-term effect of daily nutrient intake on nutritional status in haemodialysis patients. METHODS: We performed a prospective 1-year controlled study in 27 chronic haemodialysis patients, without recognized risk factors for malnutrition. Each day for 1 week, four times in the year, we measured protein nitrogen appearance, and assessed dietary protein (DPI) and energy (DEI) intake from dietary diaries. W

Evaluating the effect of targeting body shape concerns on long-term weight change.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this follow-up to a randomized proof-of-concept study was to determine if targeting body shape concern (BSC) has a clinically significant impact on long-term weight change among adult women of higher body weight with BSC. A secondary aim was to observe the maintenance of body image improvements during follow-up. METHOD: In the original 4-week trial, women were randomized to behavioral weight loss recommendations alone (control; n = 15) or combined with the evidence-based body project intervention (n = 17). All participants were directed to continue monitoring diet and e

Development and cross-cultural validation of the Goal Content for Weight Maintenance Scale (GCWMS).

PURPOSE: Long-term weight management requires sustained engagement with energy-balance-related behaviours. According to self-determination theory, behaviour goals can support or undermine motivation depending on the quality of their content (i.e., extrinsic and intrinsic motivation). This study aimed to develop and validate the goal content for weight loss maintenance scale (GCWMS). METHODS: The GCWMS was administered to 1511 participants who had achieved clinically significant weight losses and were taking part in a large weight loss maintenance study: the NoHoW Trial (ISRCTN88405328). The Impact of Breastfeeding on Maintaining Body Weight After Bariatric Surgery-A Retrospective Analysis of Maternal Outcomes of Bariatric Surgery and Pregnancy Study (MOMBARIS) Multicenter Data.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) is the most effective obesity treatment. The increasing number of MBS among young patients has led to more post-bariatric pregnancies. Our study investigates how breastfeeding duration impacts postpartum weight retention and health outcomes for mothers and babies after MBS. METHODS: MOMBARIS (Maternal Outcomes of Bariatric Surgery and Pregnancy Study) is a multicentre study. The population is derived from MOMBARIS 2, which focused on obstetric outcomes. It included patients who became pregnant following MBS, analysing pre-operative metrics, type o

Combined analysis of gestational diabetes and maternal weight status from pre-pregnancy through post-delivery in future development of type 2 diabetes.

We examined the associations of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and women's weight status from pre-pregnancy through post-delivery with the risk of developing dysglycaemia [impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, and type 2 diabetes (T2D)] 4-6 years post-delivery. Using Poisson regression with confounder adjustments, we assessed associations of standard categorisations of prospectively ascertained pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity (OWOB), gestational weight gain (GWG) and substantial post-delivery weight retention (PDWR) with post-delivery dysglycaemia (n = 692). Body checking and avoidance in low weight and weight restored individuals with anorexia nervosa and non-clinical females.

Body dissatisfaction (BD) is central to the development, maintenance and relapse of anorexia nervosa (AN). BD has been conceptualized as a multi-dimensional construct incorporating behaviours, cognitions and affect, yet little is known about the impact of weight and disordered eating on these aspects. 56 'below DSM-IV weight criteria for AN' (<BMI 17.5 kg/m(2)) and 44 'above DSM-IV weight criteria for AN' (>BMI 17.5 kg/m(2)) individuals currently receiving treatment for an eating disorder, and 60 non-eating disordered females completed the Body Checking Scale, Body Image Avoidance Questionnair

Dietary protein content for an optimal diet: a clinical view.

The dietary protein role in different clinical nutritional conditions and some physio-pathological perspectives is a current and hot topic to discuss. Recent Proceedings of the Protein Summit 2, joining more than 60 nutrition scientists, health experts, and nutrition educators, suggest to increase plant but, in particular, animal protein intake because richer in leucine and consequently more effective to influence anabolic protein metabolism. The Panel conclusions are in apparent contradiction with the nutritional ecology statements, which strongly sustain the reduction of animal origin foods
