Two cases of epidermal cyst of the breast, a rare benign condition, were detected during a 3-year period in a mammographic screening programme, from 57,954 screening examinations. It is not uncommon for epidermal cysts to be initially misdiagnosed. The mammographic, ultrasound and histological features are presented. It is recommended that these lesions be resected because they possibly have malignant potential.

Mammography and sonography were done in 479 women. In mammography cysts were suspected in 10 cases, in 20 cases solid lumps and in 49 cases no changes were detected. In sonography in 7 cases cysts were found in 23 solid lumps, in 49 no changes were detected. It was proved that sonography is much more accurate in detecting cysts than mammography.

We have made a retrospective study of 197 patients who underwent 367 breast cyst aspirations and in whom the fluid obtained was sent for cytological examination between January 1974 and August 1976. Four specimens were reported as showing malignant cells in the aspirate. All of these were excised and 3 were confirmed to be malignant. The occurrence of breast cancer in patients with gross cystic disease is 2-5 times higher as compared to control group of women. During 3 years, 183 cyst fluid samples were analyzed in 129 females, in 30 patients of them the samples were analysed repeatedly.
