A 1-year prospective study of burns in an Irish paediatric burns unit.

Burns are the fourth leading cause of injury death in children in the USA, accounting for 1300 paediatric deaths annually. The majority of paediatric burns mortality and morbidity result from simple domestic accidents that are preventable. A prospective study of paediatric burns from 1 January 1992 to 1 January 1993 was undertaken at our burns unit to outline the profile of the Irish paediatric burns problem. A total of 336 burns were referred to our unit over the 12 months (80 per cent self-referrals, 15 per cent tertiary referrals from district hospitals and 5 per cent GP referrals). Sixteen…

Burns in prisoners: A 10-year retrospective cohort study from a UK burns unit.

BACKGROUND: Burns among prisoners are complex to manage. Barriers to timely first aid and specialist care may contribute to worse outcomes, yet data on this population remain limited. This study characterized the epidemiology, injury patterns, first aid provision and follow-up engagement of prisoners with burns, to inform improvements to service provision. METHODS: We conducted a 10-year retrospective cohort study of all prisoners treated for burn injuries at a UK regional burns unit between March 2015 and April 2025. Data were extracted from medical records, including demographics, injury ch…

Colonic perforation following major burns: Experience from a burns center and a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Major burns complicated by stress ulceration and perforation of the stomach or duodenum is a recognized clinical phenomenon. Colonic perforation in burns patients is not common, and the overall incidence, diagnosis, intervention undertaken and mortality is incompletely described in the literature. METHOD: We performed a systematic review of the literature on severe burns resulting in colonic perforation during the initial admission period. Relevant studies from January 1975 to June 2020 were retrieved from MEDLINE and EMBASE databases. Patient demographics, co-morbidities, total b…

Epidemiology and outcome of burns: early experience at the country's first national burns centre.

This study aims to document the epidemiologic pattern and outcome of burn injuries in the country's first national burn centre. This case series study was conducted over a 2-year period at Burns Care Centre (BCC), Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad. The study included all burn injury patients who primarily presented to and were managed at the centre.
