OBJECTIVE: To present a case of conservatively managed calcific trochanteric bursitis and discuss differential diagnosis and treatment alternatives.
CLINICAL FEATURES: A 53-yr-old obese female presented with acute severe lateral hip and posterolateral thigh pain. Examination findings were consistent with trochanteric bursitis and radiographs demonstrated calcific infiltration of the trochanteric bursa.
INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: An intensive 2-wk course of pulsed ultrasound, ice massage, interferential current and chiropractic lumbopelvic manipulation resulted in symptomatic relief, abolishme…

In 72 patients followed for two years, the diagnosis of trochanteric bursitis was based on precise clinical signs without significant contribution from laboratory tests or radiologic signs. In six of the patients (8.3%) the bursitis was an isolated condition of unknown origin. Six other patients had rheumatoid arthritis without involvement of the ipsilateral hip joint. The remaining 60 patients (83.4%) had pathologic conditions of the adjacent areas, such as symptomatic lumbar spine arthrosis or ipsilateral hip damage, conditions that often mask the actual source of pain and disability. A rapi…

Thirty-six cases of simple trochanteric bursitis were evaluated, particular in regard to corticosteroid injections. The syndrome was mostly chronic, prevalent in older females, interspersed with other diseases. Diagnostic criteria are purely clinical. One or two local corticosteroid injections gave excellent response in two-thirds, improvement in the remaining cases. One-fourth relapsed in 2 years. Trochanteric bursitis should always be considered in hip pain syndromes, as it is so easily relieved.

A previously healthy 65-yr-old man developed clinical signs of prepatellar bursitis. Aerobic cultures from fluid aspirated from the inflamed prepatellar bursa were negative. Direct microscopic examination of the fluid showed gram-positive cocci, and anaerobic cultures grew Streptococcus hemalyticus group A. The bacterial etiology of bursitis has recently been emphasized in the literature; in most of our cases Staphylococcus was responsible. Negative cultures were next in frequency. Other microorganisms may indeed be responsible for prepatellar bursitis and should be sought where aerobic cultur…

Non-septic olecranon bursitis (NSOB) is the inflammation of the olecranon bursa, which is usually self-limiting with aseptic clinical manifestations. NSOB can be idiopathic or secondary to repetitive trauma or rheumatological conditions. Septic olecranon bursitis (SOB) is usually caused by bacterial skin colonisers, such as staphylococci and streptococci, and patients tend to present with systemic symptoms requiring medical and/or surgical interventions. Herein we present a case of disseminated cryptococcal infection stemming from bilateral septic olecranon bursitis in a previously healthy imm…

Tuberculosis of bone is an uncommon entity in the western world. We present a case of tuberculosis of the patella mimicking prepatellar bursitis in an otherwise fit and well woman of Bangladeshi origin. We believe tuberculosis of bone should form a differential diagnosis of the swollen knee in high-risk patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Greater trochanteric (GT) bursitis is a common cause of hip pain. Previously, the etiology of the trochanteric pain syndrome was thought to be caused by inflammation of the subgluteus maximus bursa (i.e., bursitis). Recently, MRI and ultrasound studies have brought into serious doubt the idea that bursitis is the etiology for trochanteric pain. To our knowledge, no histologic study of GT bursitis has been reported to date. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the histopathology of patients with and without the clinical syndrome of GT bursitis to assess for the pr…

Olecranon bursitis is a disease characterized by inflammation of the olecranon bursa, most often due to microtrauma. Although it is a common condition, there is a lack of evidence-based recommendations for the management of nonseptic olecranon bursitis. The condition is often self-limited and resolves with conservative methods such as rest, ice, compression, orthosis wear, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Older studies have shown resolution of symptoms with intrabursal corticosteroid injections and surgical bursectomy. More recent literature has demonstrated adverse effects of i…

PURPOSE: Limited data guide practice in evaluation and treatment of septic bursitis. We aimed to characterize clinical characteristics, microbiology, and outcomes of patients with septic bursitis stratified by bursal involvement, presence of trauma, and management type.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adult patients admitted to a single center from 1998 to 2015 with culture-proven olecranon and patellar septic bursitis. Baseline characteristics, clinical features, microbial profiles, operative interventions, hospitalization lengths, and 60-day readmission rates were dete…

INTRODUCTION: The optimal management of olecranon bursitis is ill-defined. The purposes of this review were to systematically evaluate clinical outcomes for aseptic versus septic bursitis, compare surgical versus nonsurgical management, and examine the roles of corticosteroid injection and aspiration in aseptic bursitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The English-language literature was searched using PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, Allied and Complementary Medicine, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Analyses were pe…

Tuberculous infection of the hand is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis that, left untreated, can cause serious joint and tendon dam … was positive for the microorganism, confirming the diagnosis of tuberculous tenosynovitis and ulnar bursitis of the wrist. The early suspicion and diagnosis of this extrapulmonary disease facilitated anti-tuberculous chemotherapy and helped avoid a hasty injection of corticosteroid.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal ultrasonography (U.S.) is an important imaging technique in the diagnosis of olecranon bursitis, especially for early manifestation. It allows sensitive detection of small fluid collections as well as for differentiation between soft tissue and bone lesions. U.S. examination allows detection of effusions, synovial proliferation, calcifications, loose bodies, rheumatoid nodules, gout tophi and septic processes.
AIM: To assess the role of ultrasonography in the diagnosis and management of patients with olecranon bursitis.
METHODS: Ultrasound was used in 34 patients …
