Larval pesticide exposure impacts monarch butterfly performance.

The long-term decline of monarch butterflies has been attributed to loss of their milkweed (Asclepias sp.) host-plants after the introduction of herbicide-tolerant crops. However, recent studies report pesticide residues on milkweed leaves that could act as a contributing factor when ingested as part of their larval diet. In this study, we exposed monarch larvae to six pesticides (insecticide: clothianidin; herbicides: atrazine, S-metolachlor; fungicides: azoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin, trifloxystrobin) on their primary host-plant, A. syriaca. Each was tested at mean and maximum levels reported …

Tracheoesophageal Puncture Site Closure With Butterfly Cartilage Graft.

A tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis is very effective for improving speech after total laryngectomy. Although it is generally a safe method, it may be necessary to close the tracheoesophageal fistula due to complications such as prosthesis-related cellulitis, granulation tissue formation, tracheoesophageal fistula necrosis, or salivary leakage around the prosthesis. Surgical and non-surgical methods for closure have been described. In this article, a method for closing the tracheoesophageal fistula with a butterfly cartilage graft is described. The butterfly cartilage technique is safe and ef

Butterfly Effect - the Concept and the Implications in Dermatology, Acne, and Rosacea.

Acne and Rosacea are chronic inflammatory skin diseases with an increasing frequency and an important negative impact on the quality of life, which are associated with a large number of false myths regarding causes and treatment. The butterfly effect is associated with chaos theory, and it is a concept originated in meteorology, which represents the dependence on initial conditions.

Differential diagnosis of multiple vertebral compression: butterfly vertebrae.

[Purpose] A butterfly vertebra is a rare congenital anomaly resulting from a symmetric fusion defect. Only a few cases of butterfly vertebra have been described. This anomaly may be isolated or associated with Pfeiffer, Jarcho-Levins, Crouzon, or Alagille syndrome. [Subject and Methods] We herein describe a 38-year-old man who presented with neck and low back pain and was found to have butterfly vertebrae at the T9 and L3 levels. He also had Behçet's disease and psoriasis. [Results] The patient's symptoms improved with analgesics and physiotherapy. [Conclusion] To our knowledge, butterfly vert

Hearing in the crepuscular owl butterfly (Caligo eurilochus, Nymphalidae).

Tympanal organs are widespread in Nymphalidae butterflies, with a great deal of variability in the morphology of these ears. How this variation reflects differences in hearing physiology is not currently understood. This study provides the first examination of hearing organs in the crepuscular owl butterfly, Caligo eurilochus. We examined the tuning and sensitivity of the C. eurilochus hearing organ, called Vogel's organ, using laser Doppler vibrometry and extracellular neurophysiology. We show that the C. eurilochus ear responds to sound and is most sensitive to frequencies between 1 and 4 kH…

Cabled butterfly closure: a novel technique for sternal closure.

Impaired sternal wound healing remains problematic after median sternotomy and can lead to significant morbidity after cardiac surgical procedures. Although metal plating systems exist for closing the sternum, their use is limited by expense and practicality, and simple wire closure remains the most common technique to close the sternum. We describe a cabling technique for sternal closure that is secure, uses standard sternal wire, and may be used on every patient. We have used the technique routinely in 291 patients with no sternal dehiscence or wound healing problems.

Ligand-induced distortion of a tetranuclear manganese butterfly complex.

The reaction of the pentadentate Schiff-base ligand 1,3-bis(salicylideneamino)-2-propanol (salproH3) with [Mn3O(O2CR)6(py)3] (R = Me, Et, But) gives the corresponding tetranuclear manganese product [Mn4O2O2CR)5(salpro)] (4Mn(III)). The syntheses, structure and magnetochemical characterization of these complexes are reported. The structure of the [Mn4(mu3-O)2]8+ is butterfly-like much more closed than in previous complexes with this core as a result of the alkoxide oxygen of the salpro ligand bridging the two wingtip Mn atoms. Variable-temperature, solid-state magnetic susceptibility studies re

Adolescent butterfly swimmer with bilateral subluxing sternoclavicular joints.

Sternoclavicular joint subluxation/dislocation injuries in the athlete are uncommon. They can be organised by degree (subluxation, dislocation), timing (acute, chronic, recurrent, congenital), direction (anterior, posterior), and cause (traumatic, atraumatic). The unusual case reported is an adolescent butterfly swimmer with recurrent bilateral sternoclavicular subluxation associated with pain and discomfort. The condition was treated and resolved with conservative management. The diagnosis, investigations, and treatment options are discussed.

The early origin of vertebral anomalies, as illustrated by a 'butterfly vertebra'.

An anomalous (butterfly) eleventh thoracic vertebra in a fetus of 63 mm greatest length is described and graphic reconstructions (together with normal controls) are provided. The cartilaginous hemicentra are separated by disc-like material. Cartilaginous bars to adjacent vertebrae are present. The neural arch is complete. The notochord is not duplicated. Only one comparable case in the embryonic period has been described previously. After a discussion of cleft vertebrae in the human and in experimental animals, a developmental timetable of the appearance of several vertebral anomalies is provi

Toxicological effects of a difenoconazole fungicide on a non-target butterfly.

Agricultural intensification, driven by increasing food demand, is one of the main drivers of global biodiversity loss. Pesticides, including fungicides, may increase crop yield but pose substantial threats to the environment. However, our current knowledge on the effects of fungicides on biodiversity suffers from less research interest compared to other pesticides and a neglect of insect herbivores. We here investigate the effects of a commercially available, ready-to-use difenoconazole fungicide on a non-target insect, the butterfly Pieris napi, under controlled laboratory conditions. When b

mirror determines the far posterior domain in butterfly wings.

Insect wings, a key innovation that contributed to the explosive diversification of insects, are recognized for their remarkable variation and many splendid adaptations. Classical morphological work subdivides insect wings into several distinct domains along the anteroposterior (AP) axis, each of which can evolve relatively independently to produce the myriad forms we see in nature. Important insights into AP subdivision of insect wings come from work in Drosophila melanogaster; however, they do not fully explain the diversity of AP domains observed across broad-winged insects. Here, we show t

Two Cases of Singular Sacral S1 Butterfly Vertebra.

A butterfly vertebra is an uncommon but clinically and radiologically significant pathology. The etiological factor of this pathology is a congenital defect in the formation of the vertebral body during embryogenesis, resulting in a cleft within the vertebral body that, in an X-ray, resembles the shape of a butterfly. Butterfly vertebrae are most often found in the thoracic and lumbar spine and more rarely in the sacral region. The clinical manifestations of this condition do not differ from the symptoms of other diseases, and it may also be asymptomatic. Only the recognition of its characteri

Indications and Evolution of the Butterfly Graft in Nasal Valve Repair.

Persistent nasal airway obstruction from inadequately addressed nasal valve compromise is common. Many techniques exist to perform nasal valve repair. Historically, spreader grafts are the most commonly used, despite a relative lack of evidence demonstrating its superiority over other methods. The butterfly graft is an alternative method of nasal valve repair and detailed surgical description from over 20 years of innovation follows in this section. There is growing evidence to suggest that the butterfly graft may be superior to spreader grafts with similar acceptability of the esthetic outcom
