[Why C-reactive protein is (usually) not high in SLE].

High levels of C‑reactive protein (CRP) in systemic lupus erythematosus are not usually a sign of disease activity but more of a severe bacterial infection. Why this is the case, even though levels of interleukin‑6 (IL-6) the most important CRP stimulator, are high in active SLE, has long been an intriguing question. Newly published results now provide an answer: in combination with interferon-alpha (IFNα), IL‑6 causes the IL‑6 receptor to be shed, i.e. enzymatically cleaved from the cell membrane. The soluble receptors constitute an IL‑6 buffer that inhibit IL‑6 biological activity in plasma.

Role of C-reactive protein in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia/cancer.

Cervical cancer is one of the most common malignancies in women. This pathology originates from the progression of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), induced by high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. During CIN, an inflammatory process characterized by immune system activation and increased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) occurs. This protein, generally an indicator of inflammatory processes, also has functions that can influence the pathogenesis of several diseases. This review summarizes the current published literature (searched on Pubmed, EMBASE and Web of Science) regar

C-Reactive Protein Facilitates Premetastatic Niche Formation in the Lungs.

C-reactive protein (CRP) has long been recognized as a marker of inflammation, but its evolving role in immunomodulation and cancer has increasingly been recognized. In recent years, multiple studies have explored CRP as a biomarker for prognosis and therapy response, particularly in the context of cancer immunotherapy. In this issue of Cancer Research, Feng and colleagues investigate the role of CRP in the development of lung metastasis. They provide evidence for a direct role of CRP acting together with commensal bacteria to instruct an immune-tolerant state of pulmonary macrophages through

Therapeutic hypothermia can cause non-infective C-reactive protein elevating.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between therapeutic hypothermia (TH) and whole blood high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). METHOD: Retrospective analysis was made on the clinical data of hospitalized infants diagnosed with asphyxia in our neonatal intensive care unit from January 2014 to June 2021. According to whether TH was performed, they were divided into two groups, the control group (missed the time in other hospitals and did not receive TH) and the treatment group (TH group). In their first ten days, analysis was mad

Elevated C-reactive protein among symptomatic youth with bipolar disorder.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Increased levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) are associated with mood symptoms in adults with bipolar disorder (BD). The few studies on this topic in youth with BD have not included controls. We, therefore, examined CRP levels in relation to symptomatic status in youth with and without BD. METHODS: Participants included 154 youth (mean age 17 years; 48 asymptomatic BD, 39 symptomatic BD, 67 healthy controls (HC)). Rank analysis of covariance test examined group differences in CRP, controlling for age and sex. Correlation between CRP and mood symptom

C-Reactive Protein Knockout Attenuates Temporomandibular Joint Inflammation in Rats.

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP), a biomarker of inflammation, is highly expressed in osteoarthritis- (OA-) related diseases, but its exact role remains unknown. In this study, we evaluated the biological effect of CRP on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) inflammation. METHODS: Freund's complete adjuvant (CFA) was used to induce TMJ inflammation in CRP-knockout (CRP-/-) and control rats. Degenerative changes in the TMJ were compared to elucidate the role of CRP in TMJ inflammation. In addition, inflammatory cytokines, macrophage activation, and osteoclast differentiation were evaluated by rea

The relationship between serum C-reactive protein and senile hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension has become an important health risk factor in the twenty-first century, especially for the elderly. Studies have confirmed that inflammation is involved in the development of hypertension and that the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein(CRP) is significantly associated with hypertension. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to explore the CRP correlation with hypertension in the elderly. METHODS: Serum CRP levels were measured in 196 hospitalized patients, and the CRP level was used as a criterion to divide them into the group with elevated CRP (> 10 mmol/L, n = 120)

Magnesium Intake, C-Reactive Protein, and Muscle Mass in Adolescents.

Background: Adult studies have suggested that magnesium intake may regulate C-reactive protein (CRP) and muscle mass, known risk factors for cardiometabolic diseases. Given the large deficiencies in magnesium intake in adolescents, we aimed to investigate sex and race differences in dietary magnesium intake and test the hypothesis that lower magnesium intake is associated with higher CRP and lower muscle mass. Methods: A total of 766 black and white adolescents, 14 to 18 years old (51% black; 50% female) were previously recruited. Diet was assessed with four to seven independent 24-h recalls.

Pathogenic role of human C-reactive protein in diabetic retinopathy.

PURPOSE: Elevated blood levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) are associated with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and diabetic complications, such as diabetic retinopathy (DR). However, its pathogenic role in DR remains unknown. The present study aims to investigate the potential role of CRP in DR pathogenesis and explore its underlying mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Human CRP transgenic (hCRP-Tg) rats were employed for streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic and oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) models. The retina function was monitored by electroretinography (ERG) and retinal thickness was mea

C-reactive protein in Crohn's disease: how informative is it?

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an important acute-phase marker, produced mainly in the liver. Its production by mesenteric adipocytes has been recently stressed in Crohn's disease (CD). There are many factors affecting CRP levels, both environmental and genetics. The short-life of this biomarker makes it of pertinent use in the assessment of inflammation. There are inconsistent results concerning the association of clinical activity indices, mucosal healing, histological activity and CRP. This review summarizes the role of CRP in CD, namely its importance in the differential diagnosis of CD; its

Recognition functions of pentameric C-reactive protein in cardiovascular disease.

C-reactive protein (CRP) performs two recognition functions that are relevant to cardiovascular disease. First, in its native pentameric conformation, CRP recognizes molecules and cells with exposed phosphocholine (PCh) groups, such as microbial pathogens and damaged cells. PCh-containing ligand-bound CRP activates the complement system to destroy the ligand. Thus, the PCh-binding function of CRP is defensive if it occurs on foreign pathogens because it results in the killing of the pathogen via complement activation. On the other hand, the PCh-binding function of CRP is detrimental if it occu

Procalcitonin and C-reactive protein in urinary tract infection diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Urinary infections are a common type of pediatric disease, and their treatment and prognosis are closely correlated with infection location. Common clinical manifestations and laboratory tests are insufficient to differentiate between acute pyelonephritis and lower urinary tract infection. This study was conducted to explore a diagnostic method for upper and lower urinary tract infection differentiation. METHODS: The diagnostic values of procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were analyzed using the receiver operating characteristic curve method for upper and lower urina

C-reactive protein in relation to early atherosclerosis and periodontitis.

Periodontitis may affect atherosclerosis via the chronic inflammation. We investigated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in relation to early vascular atherosclerotic changes in non-symptomatic subjects with and without long-term periodontitis. Carotid ultrasonography with calculation of common carotid artery intima-media area (cIMA) was performed, and hsCRP and atherosclerosis risk factors were analysed in randomly chosen 93 patients with periodontitis and 41 controls. The relationship between hsCRP, cIMA and atherosclerosis risk factors was evaluated with multiple logistic regressi

Pentraxin 3 and C-reactive protein in severe meningococcal disease.

The long pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is an important element of the innate immune system and has potential as a diagnostic tool in inflammatory conditions. We studied PTX3 in patients admitted to an intensive care unit with severe meningococcal disease and compared it with the short pentraxin C-reactive protein (CRP). Twenty-six patients with meningococcal disease were studied, 17 patients presented with meningococcal septic shock (shock group), and 9 patients presented with meningococcal meningitis or bacteremia (no-shock group). Pentraxin 3 and CRP were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
