Cadmium poisoning has been reported from many parts of the world. It is one of the global health problems that affect many organs and in some cases it can cause deaths annually. Long-term exposure to cadmium through air, water, soil, and food leads to cancer and organ system toxicity such as skeletal, urinary, reproductive, cardiovascular, central and peripheral nervous, and respiratory systems. Cadmium levels can be measured in the blood, urine, hair, nail and saliva samples. Patients with cadmium toxicity need gastrointestinal tract irrigation, supportive care, and chemical decontamination t…

Following our interest in binary element-nitrogen compounds we report here on the synthesis and comprehensive characterization (M.p., IR/Ram … ds, and for comparison [Ph4P][Cd2(N3)5(H2O)], were determined. Moreover, the synthesis of anhydrous cadmium(II) azide and its DMSO adduct is presented for the first time. For a better understanding of structure and bonding in E(N3)2, [E(N3)3](-) and [E(N3)4](2-), theoretical calculations at the M06-2X/aug-cc-pVDZ level were carried out.

Cancer of the prostate is an important and potentially fatal disease in humans but the etiology is yet undefined. Cadmium and cadmium compounds are known to be human carcinogens based on findings of increased risk to lung cancer among exposed workers, but a relationship between cancer of the prostate and/or testis in humans is unclear in spite of suggestive results in rats. Parenteral administration or oral exposure to cadmium can result in proliferate lesions and tumors of the prostate in rats. The ability of cadmium to produce neoplasms in the prostate of rats is atypically dose-related and …

Studies in the 1970s on chronic cadmium poisoning in man in Belgium showed that the earliest effect was renal dysfunction with proteinuria. Subsequent studies were focused on the characterization of cadmium proteinuria, the diagnosis and prognosis of cadmium nephropathy and the assessment of the concentrations in urine and renal cortex leading to its occurrence. Chronic exposure to cadmium in industry gives rise to a proteinuria which may be tubular, glomerular or mixed in character. This proteinuria may be accompanied or preceded by a variety of other renal effects. In active male workers, th…

Sixty-four cases of renal cancer in white males were compared with controls (197 cases of nonmalignant diseases of the digestive system and 72 cases of colon cancer) for past exposures to cadmium. Controls were also white males, and were group-matched to the cases on age for the analyses. Data on the three main sources of exposure to cadmium--diet, cigarette smoking and occupation--were obtained by interview. The results showed a significant association of renal cancer with exposure to cadmium, and favored a synergistic effect between occupational exposure and smoking. The relative risk for me…

Seven cadmium complexes: [CdX2(Hapro)(H2O)n] (X: Cl(1), Br(2)), [CdX2(Hgaba)] (X: Cl(3), Br(4)), [Cd(Hahex)2(H2O)2][CdCl4] (5), and [CdX2(Haze-3)](H2O)n (X: Cl(6), Br(7)) have been prepared and investigated by means of IR and FT Raman spectra. The crystal and molecular structures of 2, 3, 5 and 7 were determined by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. In complex 2, the cadmium atom is in a distorted octahedral geometry, ligated by two carboxyl oxygen atoms of Hapro, a water molecule, and three bromine atoms; one is terminal and each of the other two is bridging two cadmium atoms to make …

Cadmium (Cd) is an important environmental pollutant that poses a threat to human health and represents a critical component of air pollutants, food sources, and cigarette smoke. Cd is a known carcinogen and has toxic effects on the environment and various organs in humans. Heavy metals within an organism are difficult to biodegrade, and those that enter the respiratory tract are difficult to remove. Autophagy is a key mechanism for counteracting extracellular (microorganisms and foreign bodies) or intracellular (damaged organelles and proteins that cannot be degraded by the proteasome) stress…

Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous heavy metal toxicant with no biological function in the human body. Considerably, because of its long biological half-life and very low excretion rate, Cd is inclined to accumulate and cause deleterious effects on various body organs (e.g., liver, kidney, and ovary) in humans and animals. Ovaries are the most vulnerable targets of Cd toxicity. Cd has been shown to induce oxidative stress, follicular atresia, hormonal imbalance, and impairment of oocyte growth and development. Moreover, Cd toxicity has been associated with increasing incidences of menstrual disorder…

Cadmium has been listed as one of the 126 priority pollutants and a category I carcinogen. Carcinogenic effects of cadmium on the lungs, testicles, and prostate are widely recognized, but there has been insufficient research on the effect of cadmium on the thyroid gland. Cadmium has the affinity to accumulate not only in the liver, kidneys, and pancreas but also in the thyroid gland. It has been established that cadmium blood concentration correlates positively with its accumulation in the thyroid gland. Women of fertile age have higher cadmium blood and urine concentrations than men. In spite…

Analyses of cadmium concentrations in biological material are performed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), but also electrochemical methods, neutron activation analysis (NAA), and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). The predominant sample matrices include blood, plasma, serum, and urine, as well as hair, saliva, and tissue of kidney cortex, lung, and liver. While cadmium in blood reveals rather the recent exposure situation, cadmium in urine reflects the body burden and is an indicator for the cumulative long term exposure.A…

The deterioration of male fertility, reported in numerous epidemiological studies over past decades, can be connected with growing exposure to environmental toxins. Heavy metals, especially cadmium, is widely spread and extremely toxic. The mechanisms of cadmium toxic effects vary and involve the damage of vascular endothelium, intracellular junctions, germ cells, Leydig and Sertoli cells. Cadmium can increase activity of reactive oxygen species and induce changes in activity of enzymatic systems and inflammatory reactions. The morphological changes caused by cadmium included the necrosis of s…

The functional resemblance between kidney proximal tubular and inner ear epithelial cells which has often been pointed out in the literature led us to hypothesize that nephrotoxic agents that cause renal tubular injury might also impair the function of inner ear cells. As one of the most toxic environmental nephrotoxic agents is cadmium, we aimed to study its effects on hearing experimentally in rats. In this study, increased blood and renal cortical cadmium levels were associated with high cadmium accumulation in ear ossicles and labyrinth in rats exposed to cadmium. The changes in auditory b…

Cadmium as an environmental or occupational toxin has been well studied. Exposure can fairly easily be detected by analysis of cadmium in biological material. Different routes of cadmium uptake, such as via airborne particles, cigarette smoke or contaminated food, have been identified. Urinary concentrations associated with renal effects vary, depending on urinary marker of effect, and are as low as 2 micrograms cadmium/g creatinine. Different segments of the nephron are affected by cadmium. Urinary enzymes and serum derived proteins, mainly low-molecular weight proteins, as well as eicosanoid…

Exposure to lead results in accumulation in proximal renal tubular lining cells in the form of morphologically discernible inclusion bodies which are lead-protein complexes. Acute nephrotoxicity consists of proximal tubular dysfunction and can be reversed by treatment with chelating agents. Chronic lead nephrotoxicity consists of interstitial fibrosis and progressive nephron loss, azotaemia and renal failure. Potential complications of lead nephropathy include gout and hypertension. Cadmium accumulates in renal tubular lining cells bound to metallothionein, a small protein containing 30% cysti…

The possible interactions between acetaminophen and cadmium (Cd) on the kidney were investigated in female Sprague-Dawley rats. Acetaminophen was administered in the food at an average dose of 900 mg/kg and Cd in drinking water at the concentration of 200 ppm. The treatment with acetaminophen and Cd lasted 2 and 10 months, respectively. No interaction between Cd and acetaminophen was observed during the period of their concomitant administration: the increase in albuminuria caused by Cd and acetaminophen was additive, while the tubular impairment caused by acetaminophen (increased beta 2-micro…

Cd2+, a serious environmental pollutant in certain industrial regions, accumulates in mammalian tissues with a very slow turnover. Using various criteria, we studied the ability of Cd2+ to substitute for Ca2+ in calmodulin (CaM), a ubiquitous Ca2+-binding protein that mediates many of the Ca2+ effects. CaM bound Cd2+ with a Kd of 4.5 microM, presumably to the Ca2+-binding sites. Binding of Cd2+ allowed CaM to bind 2 moles chlorpromazine, or to form a complex with skeletal muscle troponin-I, troponin-T, or phosphodiesterase. Complex formation with phosphodiesterase led to its activation, which

The relationship between metallothionein (MT), chronic exposure to cadmium (Cd), and renal function was investigated in 53 men who were occupationally exposed to Cd. The aim was to determine if MT is a potential biological monitor for chronic exposure to Cd which would be useful for preventing Cd nephropathy. In this study MT excretion, serum MT, and serum creatinine concentrations were significantly higher in subjects with abnormal renal function who had been exposed to Cd. MT excretion was also linearly related on an individual basis to protein excretion, beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2-M) excr…
