The use of an intact molecule parathyroid hormone assay in disorders of calcium metabolism.

We present the results obtained using a 1-84 human parathyroid hormone (PTH) assay in patients with abnormal calcium metabolism. A normal range was established in a series of healthy volunteers. Patients with surgically proven hyperparathyroidism (HPT) showed increased PTH levels which were separate from the normal range. Patients with probable hyperparathyroidism and milder hypercalcaemia showed a raised median PTH level but the range overlapped with normal. Patients with hypercalcaemia of malignancy showed reduced PTH levels and these patients were readily differentiated from those with prob

[DIAGNOSIS OF METABOLIC DISORDERS AND METAPHYLAXIS OF RECURRENT CALCIUM OXALATE UROLITHIASIS].

The paper presents the results of the 1-year screening of biochemical parameters of urine in female patient with recurrent calcium urate urolithiasis. Based on the data of quantitative X-ray phase analysis of the composition of stone and a complex of clinical and laboratory examination, reasons for recurrent stone formation were determined. The main reasons included hypocitraturia, hyperosmolarity of urine and uric acid diathesis. Therapy with citrate mixtures and adequate water schedule (daily urine--2-2.5 liters) for 10 weeks allowed to increase the urinary pH, led to 2.5-fold increase in da

[Parathyroid hormone for disorders of calcium metabolism and metabolic bone diseases other than osteoporosis].

Recombinant human parathyroid hormone (PTH) analogues reduce fractures in patients with osteoporosis by enhancing bone formation and improving bone quality. Furthermore, many studies have demonstrated the efficacy of these analogues in diseases such as PTH-deficient hypoparathyroidism, bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw and hypophosphatasia. Further studies are needed to examine the long-term effects and the safety of these analogues in children and cancer patients.

[Study of disorders in calcium and phosphorus metabolism in the intensive fattening of young cattle].

Studied were mass disease outbreaks on eight farms in calves intensively fed concentrate mixtures that were rich in phosphorus compounds. Clinically, there were selling and deformations of the joints with pains. The tarsal and carpal joints were chiefly involved. Kyphosis of the backbone, spastic paresis of the posterior part of the body as well as tetaniform spasms in the initial stage of the disease were also observed. Morphologically, the diseased animals manifested erosions and thinning of the joint cartilage, tearing of the Achilles tendon, and increased amounts of the joint fluid. The hi

[Therapeutic agents for disorders of bone and calcium metabolism. Osteoporotic fracture prevention by strontium ranelate].

Bone loss results in osteoporosis and increased susceptibility to bone fractures. Importantly, osteoporosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly population. With a constantly increasing aging population worldwide, early prevention of bone loss is essential for adequate control of this condition. Strontium ranelate, an oral treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis, is unique in its mode of action as it is the sole anti-osteoporotic agent that both decreases bone resorption and increases bone formation. Its efficacy to reduce vertebral and non-vertebral fractures including

Plasma concentrations of parathyroid hormone-related protein in dogs with potential disorders of calcium metabolism.

The plasma concentrations of total calcium, ionised calcium, albumin, parathyroid hormone and parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrp) were measured in 25 dogs with lymphoma, nine dogs with primary hyperparathyroidism and seven dogs with adenocarcinoma of the apocrine gland of the anal sac. Plasma total calcium, ionised calcium, albumin and parathyroid hormone-related protein were measured in 18 clinically normal control dogs. The concentration of PTHrp was high in 12 of the 14 dogs that were hypercalcaemic because of an underlying malignancy but was within the reference range in all the co

[News in the management of calcium and phosphorus metabolism disorders for patient treated by hemodialysis].

Bone metabolism is very frequently disturbed in end stage renal failure hemodialyzed, with secondary hyperparathyroidism development but also serious potential cardiovascular consequences. New treatments will be available very soon in Europe such as new phosphate binders, vitamin D2 analogues or calcimimetics to fight against such medical diseases, with the hope of less risk for vascular complications. The real place of such new medical opportunities needs to be determined. Moreover, studies with morbidity and mortality end-points are waited before estimating the real importance of these new t

Metabolic disorder in myocardiac intracellular free calcium after thermal injury.

Cutaneous burn trauma causes functional inhibition of the heart, but the mechanism is unclear. Using a high dissociation constant (K(D)) calcium indicator TF-BAPTA and 19F MR spectroscopy, the relationship between the changes of cytosolic free calcium and cardiac function after burn trauma was examined. Sprague-Dawley rats received scald (43% TBSA) or sham burns. Twenty-four hours later, the hearts were excised and perfused by the Langendorff method with a modified phosphate-free Krebs-Henseleit bicarbonate buffer. Left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP) was recorded through a catheter atta

Effect of propranolol on calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium metabolic disorders in Graves' disease.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether propranolol alone can improve mineral metabolic disorders in thyrotoxicosis. Ten Graves' disease patients and 11 normal age- and sex-matched controls participated in the study. In the untreated Graves' patients, serum levels of calcium (Ca), calcium x phosphorus product (Ca x P), urinary Ca, phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), and hydroxyproline (Hp) were higher than in control subjects (P less than .05), intestinal Ca absorption was lower than in control subjects (P less than .05), and Ca, P, and Mg balance were negative (P less than .05). After

[Particularly severe calcium metabolic disorder in nephropathy from analgesic abuse].

Calcium (Ca) metabolism was compared in 2 groups of patients with chronic interstitial nephritis: in 21 patients (AAN-group) nephropathy was due to exposure for 5 to 50 years (mean 21.1) to phenacetin containing analgesics, whereas in 21 other patients (controls) it was due to exposure for 1 to 80 years (mean 21.4) (NS) to other causes. Patients were followed for 2.5 +/- 0.6 and 1.6 +/- 0.6 years respectively (mean +/- SEM) (NS). Blood Ca, P, protein, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone (PTH), 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D), together with arterial acid-base status and urinary
