Pathogenicity of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli strains in the pregnant guinea pig model.

Pathogenicity of 17 Campylobacter isolates for pregnant guinea pigs was investigated. Of 14 isolates, 12 (86%) produced rates of abortion ranging from 13% to 87%. Two isolates did not produce abortion. Reference strains of C fetus subsp venerealis produced abortion in 60% to 87% and C fetus subsp fetus produced abortion in 60% of the guinea pigs. Inoculated organisms were recovered from uterus, blood, liver, kidney, spleen, and gallbladder of the guinea pigs at rates as high as 83% for 2 ovine isolates and as low as 13% for 2 bovine and 1 human isolates. Most isolations were from the uterus. T…

Production of monoclonal antibody specific to Campylobacter jejuni and its potential in diagnosis of Campylobacter enteritis.

A monoclonal antibody (MAb 3G6) specific for Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli was produced by immunizing BALB/c mice with a local strain of C.jejuni (28.1). No cross-reactivity was observed with Enterobacteriaceae controls. By immunoprecipitation, MAb 3G6 identified a major protein band of molecular weight 45 kDa and also gave a slight reactivity with 30 and 55 kDa proteins. Using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, MAb 3G6 was able to detect C.jejuni suspended in stool without cross-reactivity to 14 other enteropathogenic bacteria suspended, normal flora in fecal suspens…

Campylobacter enteritis in Saudi Arabia.

A 12-month survey on the incidence of campylobacter infection in 1217 patients with diarrhoea was carried out in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Campylobacters were isolated from 55 (4.5%) patients, second in prevalence to salmonellas (6.2%). Shigellas were isolated from 4.2% of patients. Campylobacter isolation rates were high in children of all ages, as well as in young adults (36.5% of all isolates were from adults aged 20-39 years). Isolation rates peaked in September and November. Analysis of the results showed that 69% were Campylobacter jejuni (mostly biotype IV) and 31% C. coli. Serogroups 5 and…

Campylobacter jejuni enteritis; a review.

Campylobacter jejuni has recently been recognized as an important cause of human gastroenteritis in many countries. The clinical features of C. jejuni infections vary from those of a mild gastroenteritis to a severe enterocolitis. The most common symptoms of the disease are fever, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea. The small intestine is the main site of infection, but the colon may also be involved. The main pathogenesis of C. jejuni appears to be invasion of the wall of the gut as in salmonellosis. Isolation of the organism from faeces requires culture in a selective medium containing anti…

Mucosal invasion in campylobacter enteritis.

Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni has recently been recognized as a significant cause of enteritis in humans. The organism has been previously postulated to cause illness by direct invasion of the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract, but this has not been documented. Reported is a case of Campylobacter enteritis in which mucosal ulceration and crypt sbscesses were seen on rectal biopsy, suggesting that the pathogenesis of Campylobacter fetus enteritis involves direct mucosal invasion.

Campylobacter enteritis in South Australia.

Campylobacter jejuni was isolated on coproculture from 13 of 224 patients with suspected infectious diarrhoea whose faecal specimens were examined during a three-month period. These organisms were not isolated from 530 specimens received from asymptomatic and healthy individuals. Diarrhoea and cramping abdominal pain generally lasting two to three days were the major symptoms, though occasional patients had a more prolonged illness. Ingestion of campylobacter resulted in enteric infection with increasing numbers of campylobacter in the stool. Clinical laboratories should attempt to isolate the…

A new kit to detect Campylobacter species in stool specimens: the Orion GenRead Campylobacter®.

Campylobacter enteritis is the most frequent bacterial enteritis including in children. Its diagnosis suffers from the lack of sensitivity and delayed result of culture. Our aim was to test a new PCR-derived method for Campylobacter diagnosis in comparison to a composite reference. Patients presenting to the emergency ward of our hospital with enteric symptoms during the 2016 summer season were included. In addition to culture, an ELISA and an in-house real-time PCR were performed, as well as the new method (Orion GenRead Campylobacter) on all stool specimens. The composite reference used to c…
