An unexpected cause of dysuria in a cat in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infestation by Capillaria spp. in domestic cats is rather rare, but can cause clinical symptoms and affect behaviour. To our knowledge, this report is the first to describe a case of urinary capillariosis in a cat in Poland. CASE PRESENTATION: A female formerly stray cat aged about 1.5 years showing dysuria, stranguria, periuria and lethargy was presented at the veterinary clinic. Urinalysis revealed the presence of Capillaria plica eggs in the sediment. The cat was treated successfully with three topical doses of Broadline (Merial, Toulouse, France). CONCLUSIONS: C…

Epidemiology of endoparasite infections in the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) and association with rehabilitation outcome in wildlife centres in Northwest France.

The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is prevalent across Western Europe, with many individuals admitted to wildlife rehabilitation ce … her, Essonne). Overall, 58.3 % of hedgehogs carried at least one endoparasite. The most common were Capillaria species group (43.6 %) and Crenosoma striatum (25.7 %), followed by Brachylaemus erinacei (11 %) and Cycloisospora species group (7.3 %). Co-infection was common; 35 % of infected individuals harboured both Capillaria spp. and C. striatum. Younger h …

Antigen Recognition Patterns of Intestinal Capillariasis Using Immunoblot-Based Serodiagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of intestinal capillariasis depending on microscopic detection of parasitic stages is of low sensitivity, especially in cases with low worm burden. There is a necessity to develop sensitive and specific diagnostic tools of capillariasis for early treatment to avoid complications. Western blot (WB) technique showed promising results for antigen recognition patterns in several parasitic infections. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study is directed to identify and evaluate relevant proteins of intestinal capillariasis crude worm antigens using WB immunodiagnosis. MATERIALS AND METH…

Prevalence and magnitude of gastrointestinal helminth infections in cage-free laying chickens in Australia.

Helminth infections have been re-emerging with the growing popularity of free-range and floor-based chicken production systems. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and worm burdens of intestinal helminth infection in cage-free laying chickens in Australia. In an online survey about worm prevalence, a high proportion of respondents reported the detection of Ascaridia galli (77%), followed by tapeworms (69%) and caecal worms (Heterakis gallinarum) (62%), whereas fewer respondents (23%) reported the presence of hair worms (Capillaria spp.) in their flocks. Total worm recovery fr…

Severe parasitism in an opossum.

Chronic debilitation and anemia were observed in a free-living opossum (Didelphis marsupialis) heavily parasitized by Physaloptera turgida, Brachylaima virginianum, and Cruzia americana. Chronic interstitial pneumonia associated with Capillaria aerophila and a metastrongyloid nematode also was present.

Pharmaceutical Pollutants in Urban Rats Are Linked to Zoonotic Infection Risk.

Pharmaceutical pollution is globally widespread and known to affect the biology and ecology of exposed wildlife. However, its effects on wildlife disease, including zoonotic (animal-to-human transmitted) infections, remains unclear. We examined the presence of 97 Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and their associations with zoonotic infections (Leptospira spp., Seoul orthohantavirus, Toxoplasma gondii, Capillaria spp., and Angiostrongylus spp.) in Rattus norvegicus and R. rattus rats, two globally distributed zoonotic reservoirs. We collected 152 rats from low-income urban communities i…

Human intestinal capillariasis in Thailand.

Intestinal capillariasis caused by Capillaria philippinensis appeared first in the Philippines and subsequently in Thailand, Japan, Iran, Egypt and Taiwan; major outbreaks have occurred in the Philippines and Thailand. This article reviews the epidemiology, history and sources of C. philippinensis infection in Thailand. The annual epidemiological surveillance reports indicated that 82 accumulated cases of intestinal capillariasis were found in Thailand from 1994-2006. That made Thailand a Capillaria-prevalent area. Sisaket, in northeast Thailand, was the first province which has reported intes…

Occurrence of Eimeria spp. and Intestinal Helminths in Free-Range Chickens from Northwest and Central Romania.

Chickens raised in backyard free-range systems are confronted with a significant threat of parasitic infections. Among the parasitic agents, protozoa belonging to the genus Eimeria and helminths, including Ascaridia galli, Capillaria spp., Heterakis gallinarum, and Strongyloides avium, stand out as the most prevalent. The sampling protocol included sixteen localities in four counties within the Transylvania region of Romania. Fecal samples were collected from chickens reared in a backyard system. Fecal samples were screened for oocysts (O) and eggs (E) by flotation method, and their number per…

Molecular characterization of Trichuris serrata.

Trichuris serrata, a whipworm of cats, can cause inflammation in the cecum and upper portion of the large intestine. It is unknown if the virulence and pathology of T. serrata differ from Trichuris campanula, the other species in cats. Distinguishing the species based on egg size is challenging. In addition, Trichuris eggs can be difficult to distinguish from Capillaria spp. This paper presents the first molecular description of T. serrata. The 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene was sequenced from male adult worms sourced from two unrelated cats on St. Kitts. Based on the analysis of 651 base pairs…

Renal capillariasis in the small Indian mongoose, Herpestes auropunctatus.

A Capillaria sp. was recovered from the kidneys of 28 (93.3%) of 30 small Indian mongooses (Herpestes auropunctus) collected in St. Lucia, West Indies. The nematodes were embedded within distended pelvic fornices of the kidney and surrounded by accumulations of eggs. A chronic, low-level inflammation of the transitional epithelium was characterized by hyperplasia, giant cells surrounding embedded eggs and a plasmacytic infiltration. This is the first record of a capillarid nematode from the kidney of the mongoose.

Intestinal capillariasis: report of a case.

Infection with Capillaria philippinensis has not been reported in Taiwan before. It is characterized by chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain and muscle wasting. Because the infection results in a severe disease with a high mortality, early diagnosis is very important. A 58-year-old housewife from Ar-Lien village, Kao-Hsiung County, was admitted to the National Taiwan University Hospital in July 1988, after suffering from diarrhea, lower leg edema and weight loss for one year. The initial symptom was epigastric pain followed by watery diarrhea. Thereafter borborygmus, frequent loose stool passage a…

Zoonotic nematode in the city of La Plata, Argentina: Report of a case of Calodium hepaticum in Rattus rattus.

This study describes a case of Calodium hepaticum (Trichinellida: Capillariidae) infection in an adult rat (Rattus rattus) from the periurban area of the city of La Plata in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The rat was found with neurological signs (ataxia, lethargy, and episodes of unresponsiveness) in the food storage of a goat production facility. The liver was observed with hepatomegaly and diffuse and irregular yellowish-white spots appearing in striae or small nodules on the external surface and inside the liver. Subsequent microscopic and histopathological studies were performed
