Perfluorooctanoic Acid Affects Thyroid Follicles in Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio).

Carp kidney is comprised of nephrons, hemopoietic tissue, and also hormonally-active thyroid follicles. Given this anatomical trait, it has been used to assess the thyroid disrupting potential of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a widespread and feared per- poly-fluoroalkyl substance and a persistent organic pollutant capable of interfering with the endocrine system in animals and humans. The occurrence and morphology of thyroid follicles in kidneys of carp experimentally exposed to 200 ng L-1 or 2 mg L-1 waterborne PFOA for 56 days were studied. The abundance of thyroid follicles was significan

A Plastivore Gut System Enables In Vivo Biotransformation and Partial Defluorination of Perfluorooctanoic Acid.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are highly persistent contaminants that resist biological degradation, hindering the development of sustainable remediation strategies. Here we reveal that plastivorous Tenebrio molitor larvae mediate gut-driven biotransformation and partial defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in vivo. Over 15 days, the apparent loss of extractable parent PFOA was 47.9% and 41.2% in the 0.5 g kg-1 and 20 g kg-1 PFOA dietary treatments, respectively. Control-corrected inorganic fluoride recovered from larval tissues and frass, together with the identificati

Amine-Functionalized A-Center Sphalerite for Selective and Efficient Destruction of Perfluorooctanoic Acid.

Perfluorochemicals (PFCs), especially perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), have contaminated the ground and surface waters throughout the world. Efficient removal of PFCs from contaminated waters has been a major challenge. This study developed a novel UV-based reaction system to achieve fast PFOA adsorption and decomposition without addition of sacrificial chemicals by using synthetic photocatalyst sphalerite (ZnS-[N]) with sufficient surface amination and defects. The obtained ZnS-[N] has the capability of both reduction and oxidation due to the suitable band gap and photo-generated hole-trapping

Effect of clay content on the mobilization efficiency of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from soils by electrokinetics and hydraulic flushing.

The need for the efficient remediation of soils impacted by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is substantially growing because of the notable upsurge in societal and regulatory awareness of this class of chemicals. To remediate PFAS-contaminated soils using mobilization approaches, the choice of appropriate techniques highly depends on the soil's composition, particularly the clay content, which significantly affects the soil's permeability. Here, we investigated the PFAS mobilization efficiency from soils with different clay contents by using two techniques: electrokinetic (EK) remed

Alcohols radicals can efficiently reduce recalcitrant perfluorooctanoic acid.

Alcohols are commonly used as eluents for the regeneration of per/poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) adsorbents, but their potential effects on the subsequent treatment of these eluates have not been fully explored. This work investigated the effect of alcohols on perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) degradation by persulfate (PS) based advanced oxidation processes. The results showed that ethanol significantly promoted PFOA degradation in thermal/PS system. Under anoxic conditions, 25.5±1.4% or 91.2±1.6% of PFOA was degraded within 48 h in the absence or presence of ethanol. Electron paramagnetic r

Distribution of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances and their precursors in human blood.

Many studies have examined per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in human blood. However, the distribution of PFASs in human blood remains not well known, especially for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) precursors. In this study, human blood samples (n = 162) were collected from general Chinese population, and then the isomer-specific partitioning of PFASs between human plasma and red blood cells (RBCs) were investigated. Perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and PFOS were consistently the predominant PFASs in both human plasma and RBCs. In human blood, among C4-C7 perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCA

Production and evaluation of rabies immunoglobulin extracted from chicken egg yolk.

This study investigated the potential of using laying hens to produce rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) due to concerns about an African Horse Sickness outbreak in 2020. The hens were immunized with rabies vaccine, resulting in the production of Immunoglobulin Y (IgY) antibodies in their egg yolks. The study found that using polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG) was the most effective method for extracting anti-rabies IgY from egg yolks in terms of amount (1.87 mg of IgY from one mL of egg yolk), purity (83 %), and cost-effectiveness. Further purification through affinity chromatography increased the purit

Bothropic antivenom based on monoclonal antibodies, is it possible?

Neutralizing monoclonal antibodies against three major toxic components of Bothrops atrox venom were produced and tested. The mAbs against phospholipase A2, hemorrhagic metalloprotease, and thrombin-like enzymes were produced in large amounts and purified with caprylic acid followed by ammonium sulfate precipitation. Purified mAbs were analyzed by SDS-PAGE and their ability to neutralize the respective toxins was tested. Five Swiss mice were injected i.p. with 13.5 mg of pooled mAbs and challenged via s.c. route with venom. Survival rate was recorded for the next 48 h. All mice treated and cha

Multigenerational effects of perfluorooctanoic acid on lipid metabolism of Caenorhabditis elegans and its potential mechanism.

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), especially perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), have been showed to induce obesogenic effects which may last over generations. However, the underlying mechanisms are not yet clear. In the present study, wild-type N2 Caenorhabditis elegans and the daf-2 mutant were exposed to PFOA for 4 consecutive generations (F0 to F3) at 1.0 ng/L. Effects on fat content and fat metabolism in the directly exposed F0 to F3 generations, the offspring of F0 (T1 to T3) and also those of F3 (T1' to T3'). Results showed that PFOA significantly stimulated the fat contents in F0

Acid-Catalyzed Solvolysis of Softwood in Caprylyl Glycol to Produce Lignin Derivatives.

Glycol lignin (GL) is produced via the acid-catalyzed solvolysis of softwood meal using glycols such as polyethylene glycol. The physicochemical and thermal properties of GL are expected to be controllable by varying the glycol type. In this study, caprylyl glycol (CG), which is a biobased glycol derived from the caprylic acid component of coconut and palm oils, was used to investigate the effects on the acid-catalyzed solvolysis of softwood. The reactions were performed at 140, 150, and 160 °C for 30-120 min to obtain lignin derivatives (CG-lignin: CGL). The chemical and physical properties o

Dynamic transformation in flavor during hawthorn wine fermentation: Sensory properties and profiles of nonvolatile and volatile aroma compounds coupled with multivariate analysis.

Fermentation stage is a crucial factor for flavor profiles formation of hawthon wine. Thus, comprehensive knowledge of dynamic relationship between nonvolatile (NVOCs) and volatile aroma compounds (VOCs) from hawthorn wine at different fermentation stages was investigated by GC-MS and HPLC coupled with multivariate analysis. The increase of alcohols/esters/acids but decrease of terpenes/aldehydes/ketones was observed as fermentation extension. Specifically, OAV of ethyl acetate, ethyl caprylate, and ethyl caprate was > 50 from the 3rd day to 10th day, giving more fruity properties. Multivariat

[Malassezia spp.: interactions with topically applied lipids-a review : Malassezia and topically applied lipids].

Lipophilic Malassezia yeasts are an important part of the human resident skin flora, especially in seborrheic areas. Besides mutualistic interactions with the host they are also linked to diseases although the specific causes are not yet comprehensively understood. The amount of available lipids on the skin correlates with the Malassezia density and also with the occurrence of certain diseases like tinea versicolor. Here, the naturally produced lipids of the sebaceous glands play a role. Hardly studied thus far is the impact of topically applied lipids. Here, growth promotion as well as inhibi

Phenolic compounds as antioxidants to improve oxidative stability of menhaden oil-based structured lipid as butterfat analog.

Phenolic compounds, including propyl gallate, 1-o-galloylglycerol, ferulic, gallic, caffeic, rosmarinic, and carnosic acids, tocopherols, and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), were investigated as antioxidants to improve the oxidative stability of a structured lipid (SL) produced by the enzymatic acidolysis of menhaden oil with caprylic and stearic acids. SL had similar physical properties to butterfat but was more susceptible to oxidation. The above phenolic compounds were each added to SL as antioxidants. SL with 1-o-galloylglycerol, rosmarinic acid, or BHT showed the highest oxidative stabili

Timing-dependent neuroprotective effects of Virgin coconut oil against chronic restraint stress-induced neurobehavioral and hippocampal dysfunction: GC-MS profiling and in vivo evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress, often exacerbated by improper lifestyle, long-term physical confinement, and emotional distress, these are the major contributor to neuropsychiatric disorders, mostly through hippocampal dysfunction. Though synthetic drugs offer symptomatic relief, their side effects prompt a growing interest in natural plant-derived nutraceuticals. Virgin coconut oil (VCO), rich in medium-chain fatty acids, polyphenols, and antioxidants, has demonstrated preliminary neuroprotective activity; however, its pharmacological basis in hippocampal dysfunction induced by chronic restraint

Deep eutectic solvent served as extractant and bio-activity enhancer: applications on curcuminoids extraction and food preservation.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) from matrine and caprylic acid were constructed herein and used to extract curcuminoids from Curcuma longa. The DESs displayed excellent extraction efficiency that can be comparable to those with commonly used harmful organic solvents. The curcuminoids possessed high stability in the extract, which provided good anti-oxidant ability. Moreover, the extract was further used without any separation or purification process to develop biofilm that showed excellent anti-bacterial ability against E. coli and S. aureus, which was resulted from both components of DES.
