We counted nucleated red blood cells (NRBC) per 100 white blood cells (WBC) in the umbilical cord blood from 98 twins born to 49 women with uncomplicated twin pregnancies at > or = 34 weeks of gestation to better characterize NRBC in twins. A quantitative assay for lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus was developed and standardized. The assay is based on direct immunofluorescent staining of infected L-929 cell monolayers and enumeration of cells containing fluorescent viral antigens.
