Eosinophilic granulocytes in the CSF were observed in 94 of approximately 10,000 qualitative cytologic preparations. Those cases of eosinophilia which occurred in the context of a parasitic disease or a puncture-related hemorrhage were excluded. CSF eosinophilia exceeding 1% was found in 57.5% of the cases and 5% in 23.5%. Increased cell counts were observed in 67.7% of the cases; elevated CSF protein values, in 68% to 73%; blood eosinophils, in 10.4%. OBJECTIVE: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) hypovolemia presents with orthostatic headaches due to CSF leakage. However, a direct association between the lack of CSF and clinical symptoms has not been found. CSF hypovolemia can be improved by refilling CSF. A case of spontaneous hypotension of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is reported. A 32 years-old woman was complaining of intense orthostatic headaches. CT scan showed slit ventricles and the spinal tap showed a pressure of the CSF too low to be measured. A sample of clear CSF could only be obtained by aspiration. The patient's status improved without drugs by simply staying in bed for one week. Few similar cases have been reported. The mechanisms of this disorder still remains unknown.

Some of the unwanted effects of quinidine commonly occurring in clinical practice involve the central nervous system. We therefore assessed the rate and extent of quinidine passage into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in humans and dogs. In eight human subjects receiving oral quinidine therapy, lumbar CSF quinidine concentrations averaged 16% of unbound serum concentrations (range: 4% to 37%). In forty-five children the hypoxanthine concentration in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was measured (fifty-two samples). In newborn infants (nineteen patients) the hypoxanthine levels were higher in patients with clinical conditions associated with hypoxia (idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome, asphyxia, apneic attacks) than in patients without clinical hypoxia (P less than 0.01). In a study of the spinal fluid chloride levels at the time of admission to hospital in a series of 1,788 cases of suspected meningitis, it was noted that the chloride content was not depressed in poliomyelitis, viral meningitis and encephalitis. In pyogenic meningitides, the spinal fluid chlorides were moderately depressed. More pronounced depression was noted in tuberculous and fungal meningitides.
