BACKGROUND: Pneumonitis, characterised by large numbers of neutrophils in the lung, is an important feature of the meconium aspiration syndrome. The mechanism underlying the neutrophil influx is not known. We have investigated whether meconium has chemotactic activity and whether such activity is related to the presence of interleukin 8.

The early phase reaction of neutrophil chemotaxis (polarization) was studied in 47 cases with Behçet's disease and 24 cases with sarcoidosis by polarization assay. 53 normal subjects served as controls. The polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) chemotaxis index and modulation of serum factors in 15 Brazilian periodontal patients (five localized juvenile and ten adult periodontitis) and ten healthy subjects were examined. Adult periodontitis patients showed a normal chemotaxis index, Localized juvenile periodontitis LJP patients showed diminished chemotaxis and serum cell-directed inhibitor activity. The results suggest that PMN abnormalities could not be caused by only the neutrophils themselves, but also by modulation of serum factors acting on this LJP disease.

The "in vivo" chemotaxis was studied in C57Bl/10 mice 10, 30, 50 and 60 days after a Schistosoma mansoni infection in comparison to a control group (uninfected mice).
