Calcification of the submandibular gland in a patient with chickenpox.

The pneumonia virus of chickenpox is now known to cause scattered calcified foci in the lungs, however to our knowledge, recent literature has not discussed calcification in the salivary glands. A 15-year-old boy consulted the department of radiology because of a swelling on the right side of the submandibular area. Radiological assessment included an ultrasonography and computerized tomography scan of the neck area, which demonstrated intraparenchymal amorph calcification, with approximately 13 mm diameter in the right submandibular gland. General condition and oral intake was good without di…

Management of chickenpox with frozen mother's milk.

OBJECTIVES: If a mother has contracted chickenpox, the antibodies in her milk confer immunity against chickenpox to her breastfed babies. This passive immunization may avoid or spare the breastfed babies' symptoms of chickenpox. It is hypothesized that frozen breast milk may shorten chickenpox duration because specific antibodies against varicella zoster have been detected in human milk and they are resistant to digestion and are stable in frozen milk. DESIGN: The clinical outcomes of chickenpox in a 9-year-old boy and his father on frozen breast milk are reported. SETTINGS: The study compri…

[Purpura fulminans: a rare complication of chickenpox].

A 3.5-year-old boy presented with purpura on the buttocks extending towards both legs. Two weeks earlier, he had had chickenpox. Because of the rapidly progressing purpura with clinical signs of hypovolaemic shock, he was treated with fresh frozen plasma, packed red blood cells, intravenous immunoglobulins, prednisolone, acyclovir and ceftriaxone. The purpura stopped spreading. In the next few days, the skin at the site of the purpura became necrotic and was excised, as was the subcutis and part of the fascia on both legs and flanks. The right lower leg was amputated and a temporary colostomy …

Septic arthritis of the elbow after chickenpox.

Musculoskeletal complications following chickenpox are rare among immunologically normal children. Septic arthritis after varicella is caused by group A Streptococcus and affects the knee most frequently. We present a case of septic arthritis of the elbow caused by Staphylococcus aureus. We review the English language literature on septic arthritis complicating chickenpox. We conclude that diagnosis and treatment should be carried out according to guidelines on de novo septic arthritis including the early use of magnetic resonance imaging.

[A case of radiculomyelitis following chickenpox in adulthood].

A 34-year-old woman presented with numbness in both lower limbs and weakness of right lower limb twenty six days after a primary varicella infection (chickenpox) associated with fever and rash. Neurological examination revealed numbness of both lower limbs, more severe on the right side, mild paresis of the right lower limb, particularly in the tibialis anterior muscle, and absent ankle jerk on the right. After admission, hyperalgesia appeared at the thoracic 10-12 levels. The T2-weighted MRI of the spinal cord revealed a high signal intensity lesion at the Th 9 level and gadolinium enhancemen…

[Invasive streptococcal infection as a complication of chickenpox].

Two girls aged 11 months and 6 years, presented with an invasive group A streptococcal (GAS) infection during the course of primary varicella. The infant had severe cellulitis of the left arm and leg, fever and bacteraemia. She developed osteomyelitis of ulna and tibia. The 6-year-old girl had a fever > 38.5 degrees C, hypotension, an acute respiratory distress syndrome, liver function abnormalities, and positive cultures of blood and joints. Her clinical picture was compatible with a GAS-associated toxic shock syndrome. If during the course of primary varicella persistent fever, secondary fev

[Fatal chickenpox infection in a newborn infant].

A fatal disseminated varicella zoster infection was diagnosed in a newborn boy. The mother had contracted chickenpox 1 day before delivery. Infants whose mothers suffer from chickenpox between 5 days before and 2 days after delivery, should receive varicella zoster immunoglobulin immediately post partum. If clinical symptoms still occur, aciclovir should be administered.

Antiviral treatment in chickenpox and herpes zoster.

Intravenous acyclovir is effective for varicella in adults and immunocompromised children, causing more rapid resolution of the illness and fewer complications. Intravenous acyclovir in immunocompromised patients with herpes zoster decreases new lesion formation, decreases acute pain, halts dissemination of the virus, and lessens visceral complications. Intravenous acyclovir may also be effective in zoster encephalitis. Intravenous vidarabine also has a favorable affect on chickenpox and herpes zoster. Topical acyclovir may benefit herpes zoster in immunosuppressed patients by accelerating cut…

[Chickenpox and pregnancy. Perinatal aspects and prevention].

Five neonates born to women who had had varicella late in pregnancy or in the post-partum were admitted to our unit during the last year. In utero transmission of varicella-zoster virus occurred in 2 cases. One of them had no clinical eruption but specific IgM at a titer of 1/200. The mother presented with varicella 15 days before delivery. The other developed severe neonatal congenital varicella (with disseminated eruption, pneumonia and seizures). She was treated by Aciclovir (15 mg/kg/8 h). The mother presented with chickenpox 24 hours after birth. Varicella occurring in a pregnant woman fr…

Childhood lichen planus pemphigoides triggered by chickenpox.

Lichen planus pemphigoides (LPP) is a rare autoimmune bullous disorder that is rarer in children characterized by bullae on lichen planus like papules and the normal looking skin. Clinical, histopathological and direct immunoflourescence evaluation is important for the diagnosis of this entity. We report a case of LPP in a 5-year-old girl child probably triggered by an episode of preceding varicella. Diagnosis was confirmed by histopathology and immunofluorescence examination. Histological findings were typical of lichen planus from the biopsy taken from a violaceous to erythematous papule and
