Microbial degradation of chlorinated acetophenones.

A defined mixed culture, consisting of an Arthrobacter sp. and a Micrococcus sp. and able to grow with 4-chloroacetophenone as a sole source of carbon and energy, was isolated. 4-Chlorophenyl acetate, 4-chlorophenol, and 4-chlorocatechol were identified as metabolites through comparison of retention times and UV spectra with those of standard substances. The proposed pathway was further confirmed by investigation of enzymes. The roles of the two collaborating strains were studied by growth experiments and on the level of enzymes. If transient accumulation of 4-chlorophenol was avoided either b

[Chlorinated hydrocarbons in breast milk].

Chlorocarbons, which are used for cleaning purposes in both the home and industry, are of growing interest with respect to environmental pollution. We have therefore, compared the concentrations of chloroform (CH CL3), carbon tetrachloride (C CL4) and tetrachloroethylene (C2 CL4), determined by gas chromatography, in breast milk from 13 puerperal mothers from Innsbruck and the surrounding Tyrol with the respective data in 20 mothers from Linz and the surrounding industrial area. In fact, no elevation in chlorocarbon levels was detected in either group.

ON THE MECHANISM OF CHLORIN RETENTION IN PNEUMONIA.

THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS MAY BE DRAWN FROM AN ANALYSIS OF THE PROTOCOLS: 1. The chlorin output is very much diminished during the process of experimental pneumonia in dogs (tables I and II). The quantity of chlorin retained in the cases with well developed exudates (table I) is much larger than the exudate could account for. 2. Turpentine pleurisy in dogs (tables III and IV) also is associated with a retention of chlorin, but this is not so marked as in pneumonia. There is no direct quantitative relation between the water output and the chlorin excretion. 3. The rabbits with pneumococcal sept

Dual carbon-chlorine stable isotope investigation of sources and fate of chlorinated ethenes in contaminated groundwater.

Chlorinated ethenes (CEs) are ubiquitous groundwater contaminants, yet there remains a need for a method to efficiently monitor their in situ degradation. We report here the first field application of combined stable carbon and chlorine isotope analysis of tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) to investigate their biodegradation in a heavily contaminated aquifer. The two-dimensional Compound Specific Isotope Analysis (2D-CSIA) approach was facilitated by a recently developed gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GCqMS) method for δ(37)Cl determination. Both C and Cl isot…

Organic chloramines attenuation and disinfection by-product formation during UV, chlorination and UV/chlorine processes.

Organic chloramines (OCs) have become one of the research focuses in the field of drinking water treatment due to its limited oxidation and sterilization ability as well as potential cytotoxicity and genetic toxicity to the public. Among widespread OCs, produced by chlorinating cytosine are a typical one exists during chlorine disinfection. OCs degradation during UV, chlorination and UV/chlorine processes were systematically investigated. UV irradiation at 254 nm could effectively degrade OCs by 96.6% after 60 min, mainly because N-Cl bond had significant UV absorption at 250-280 nm leading to…

Cometabolism of chlorinated solvents and binary chlorinated solvent mixtures using M. trichosporium OB3b PP358.

The mutant methanotroph, Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b PP358, which constitutively expresses soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO), was used to study the degradation kinetics of individual chlorinated solvents and binary solvent mixtures. Although sMMO's broad specificity permits a wide range of chlorinated solvents to be degraded, it creates the potential for competitive inhibition of degradation rates in mixtures because multiple chemicals are simultaneously available to the enzyme. To effectively design both ex-situ and in-situ groundwater bioremediation systems using strain PP358, kinetic

Calibration bias of experimentally determined chlorine isotope enrichment factors: the need for a two-point calibration in compound-specific chlorine isotope analysis.

RATIONALE: The recent development of compound-specific online chlorine isotope analysis (37 Cl-CSIA) methods has fostered dual chlorine-carbon isotope studies to gain better insights into sources and environmental transformation reactions of chlorinated ethenes. One-point and two-point calibration schemes are currently used to convert raw data to the international δ37 ClSMOC scale, but a critical evaluation of best practices to arrive at reliable δ37 ClSMOC signatures and enrichment factors was missing and is presented here. METHODS: Aqueous solutions of neat perchloroethylene and trichloroet…

Chemical Transformations of Benzyl Alcohol Caused by Atomic Chlorine.

Atomic chlorine present in the polluted troposphere can form potentially carcinogenic compounds as a result of a reaction with a natural product. This paper examines the stability of benzyl alcohol-a natural product commonly found in cosmetics-in interaction with atomic chlorine, which is becoming ever more present in the Earth's atmosphere as a result of its pollution. Research shows that atomic chlorine generated in the gas phase easily penetrates the liquid phase of benzyl alcohol, resulting in the formation of hydrochloric acid. The resulting HCl initiates further transformations of benzyl…

A systematic review on chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant.

The COVID-19 pandemic has tremendously increased the production and sales of disinfectants. This study aimed to systematically review and analyze the efficacy and safety of chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant. The literature relating to the use of chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant was systematically reviewed in January 2021 using databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. Inclusion criteria were studies that investigated the use of chlorine dioxide to assess the efficacy, safety, and impact of chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant. Out of the 33 included studies, 14 studies foc…

Chlorine dioxide-based oxidation processes for water purification:A review.

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) has emerged as a broad-spectrum, safe, and effective disinfectant due to its high oxidation efficiency and reduced formation of organochlorinated by-products during application. This article provides an updated overview of ClO2-based oxidation processes used in water treatment. A systematic review of scientific information and experimental data on ClO2-based water purification procedures is presented. Concerning ClO2-based oxidation derivative problems, the pros and cons of ClO2-based combined processes are assessed and disinfection by-product (DBP) control approaches a…

[Swallowing and suffocating: respiratory consequences of chlorine and hydrocarbons].

Several toxic substances, inhaled or swallowed, can cause similar respiratory symptoms. We present two young patients with respiratory symptoms, one after inhaling chlorine gas and the other after ingesting lamp oil. Pathophysiology and clinical effects of these two substances differ. No specific antidotes exist for most toxic substances. Inhalation of respiratory irritants, such as chlorine gas, can lead to wheezing or bronchial obstruction, which can generally be handled by the family physician. In mild cases, administration of a bronchodilator is sufficient. Hydrocarbons such as lamp oil, h…

Chlorine characterization and thermal behavior in MSW and RDF.

Chlorine, as a key element causing high temperature corrosion and low efficiency in waste-to-energy plants, and its thermal behavior has widely drawn attention. In this study, the chlorine content in eight fractions of municipal solid waste (MSW) was quantified and characterized using five analytical methods. The influence of the operating temperature, and fuel additives like sulfur and silica on the volatilization of chlorine in combustion process was also investigated. The results showed: these fractions cover a wide range of chlorine content from 0.1 wt.% in wood to >6 wt.% in non-packaging…

Application of gold catalyst for mercury oxidation by chlorine.

This paper discusses a recent study of mercury catalytic oxidation by chlorinating reagents. Gold was chosen as the catalyst because of its reluctance to chemisorb some gases such as O2, NO, H2O, and SO2. This property, as demonstrated in this study, is instrumental to mercury oxidation by circumventing some undesired inhibitory reactions such as OH + NO + M --> HONO + M and OH + SO2 + M --> HOSO2 + M, which were recognized under homogeneous situations at high temperatures. In comparison to Cl2, HCl showed weak oxidizing capability but appreciable inhibition in mercury oxidation by Cl2, probab

Oxidation of pharmaceuticals during water treatment with chlorine dioxide.

The potential of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) for the oxidation of pharmaceuticals during water treatment was assessed by determining second-order rate constants for the reaction with selected environmentally relevant pharmaceuticals. Out of 9 pharmaceuticals only the 4 following compounds showed an appreciable reactivity with ClO2 (in brackets apparent second-order rate constants at pH 7 and T = 20 degrees C): the sulfonamide antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (6.7 x 10(3) M(-1) s(-1)), the macrolide antibiotic roxithromycin (2.2 x 10(2) M(-1) s(-1)), the estrogen 17alpha-ethinylestradiol (approximately …

Long-term lung sequelae following accidental chlorine gas exposure.

Acute exposure to sublethal doses of chlorine gas resulted in persistent pulmonary symptoms in 3 patients who had no past history of respiratory disease. The patients complained of intermittent dyspnea in association with respiratory irritants and physical exertion for more than 2.5 years postexposure. Four months after the accident bronchoalveolar lavage showed an inflammatory cell reaction, whereas 16 months later the differential cytology proved nearly normal. Moderate to severe nonspecific bronchial hyperresponsiveness was assessed in intervals of 4, 20 and 30 months after the accident. Al…
