Sixty-three patients, 49 men and 14 women, developed acute cholecystitis without gallbladder stones. Only eight patients had a history suggestive of gallbladder disease. In 17 patients cholecystitis developed in the postoperative period, and cholecystitis occurred in 7 patients who had extensive trauma. The signs and symptoms did not differ markedly from those found when acute cholecystitis is associated with cholelithiasis. Pain and tenderness in the right upper abdominal quadrant, vomiting, abdominal distention, decreased bowel sounds, jaundice and fever were common. Thirty (47.6 percent) ga

Emphysematous cholecystitis is a rare form of acute cholecystitis, characterized radiographically by the presence of gas within the gallbladder. We report of a patient, who was admitted to the hospital with the diagnosis of acute abdomen. This patient had an emphysematous cholecystitis caused by Clostridium perfringens. We found the wall of the gallbladder emphysematous and gangrenous, the gallbladder was distended and contained purulent material, but no stones. However, in addition, the films of abdomen showed gas in the ducts. Diagnosis, pathogenesis and the aetiological and therapeutical as

Acute emphysematous cholecystitis is an uncommon condition caused by gas-forming organisms and characterized by the presence of gas in the wall and lumen of the gallbladder. Its incidence is higher among male diabetics. AEC in an elderly North American diabetic man with Indian ancestry is reported with a brief review of the world literature. The diagnosis was made preoperatively with the aid of plain radiographic films of the abdomen. A gangrenous distended gallbladder was removed at operation. Clostridium perfringens was cultured from the gallbladder contents and wall. If AEC is suspected, in

Emphysematous cholecystitis is an insidious and rapidly progressing disease that requires prompt surgical intervention. As the majority of the patients contracting this disease initially present to the emergency department with complaints of abdominal pain and often mild constitutional symptoms, it is important for the emergency physician to be aware of this clinical entity. Didactic cases have been presented that, in many ways, illustrate classic examples of emphysematous cholecystitis, the diagnosis of which can often be made in the emergency department using an upright abdominal radiograph.

Eosinophilic cholecystitis (EC) is a rare disease that is characterised by eosinophilic infiltration of the gallbladder. Its pathogenesis is unknown, although many hypotheses have been made. Clinical and laboratory manifestations do not differ from those of other causes of cholecystitis. Diagnosis is histological and usually performed after analysis of the surgical specimen. We report the case of a woman aged 24 years, with symptoms of fever, vomiting and pain in the right upper quadrant. When imaging tests revealed acalculous cholecystitis, an urgent cholecystectomy was performed. Histologica
