Chondromas of the base of the skull are most commonly found in the parasellar and sellar regions, and present varying degrees of involvment of the cavernous sinus. However, those confined mainly to the cavernous sinus are rare, and only a few cases have been reported. A 50 year old man experienced left hemifacial pain followed by left abducens nerve palsy. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance image depicted a well circumscribed mass in the left cavernous sinus. A pterional craniotomy was performed to approach this lesion intradurally. The tumour was subtotally removed Histologically t…

Intracranial chondromas are uncommon intracranial tumours that most frequently arise from the skull base. They can, however, arise from the calvarium or the meninges. In these cases their neuroradiological features may mimic other intracranial tumours. We present two cases of intracranial chondroma, one that originated from the convexity and the other from the falx. Total excision was achieved in both cases. The literature on intracranial chondromas is reviewed.

An 8-year-old female with Ollier's disease (multiple enchondromatosis) developed an intracranial chondroma arising from the clivus, which was diagnosed by both computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and management of this rare pediatric intracranial tumor are discussed.

We report a case of periosteal chondroma of the proximal humerus with multiple cartilaginous masses extending around two-thirds of the metaphysial circumference. The humerus was short, presumably because the tumour interfered with growth at the epiphysial plate.

In 1958 a mediastinal tumor was discovered in an asymptomatic patient. The tumor was resected and diagnosed as a nonchromaffin chemodectoma. Additionally an oesophageal abnormality was discovered but not treated. At subsequent follow-ups the mediastinum never appeared normal and the heart size progressively increased. In 1974 a small opacity appeared in the left lung. In 1975 the patient was operated: a pulmonary osteochondroma, a pericarditis and an intrapericardial aortopulmonary chemodectoma were discovered. The oesophagus was not explored. In july 1979 an inoperable epidermoid carcinoma of…

BACKGROUND: Sellar chondromas are extremely rare benign cartilaginous tumors, representing less than 0.3% of intracranial tumors. Their occurrence in the pediatric population is exceptionally rare and their clinical and radiological presentation frequently mimics that of more common sellar lesions, making preoperative diagnosis particularly challenging.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors present the case of a 16-year-old female patient with a sellar chondroma treated via a transsphenoidal endoscopic approach and adjuvant radiosurgery. The patient presented with headache, bitemporal hemianopsia, and ho…

BACKGROUND: Periosteal chondromas are rare benign cartilaginous tumors that rarely arise in the spine, with cervical localization being exceptionally uncommon. Most of reported cases of cervical chondroma involve younger patients and are often diagnosed in the upper cervical region (C1-2). The authors present the case of a 65-year-old woman with a history of metastatic breast cancer undergoing routine PET-CT, which revealed a hypermetabolic osteodestructive lesion at C6. MRI findings suggested spinal metastasis with myeloradicular compression.
OBSERVATIONS: Surgery was performed via anterior …

INTRODUCTION: Soft-tissue chondromas are rare, benign cartilaginous tumors predominantly affecting the extremities, often diagnosed in middle-aged individuals without a clear sex predilection. Despite their benign nature, these tumors can pose significant diagnostic challenges due to their slow growth, asymptomatic nature, and potential for mimicking other soft-tissue tumors.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 27-year-old male with an 8-year history of a progressively enlarging mass on the dorsal aspect of the second toe of the left foot, leading to pain, difficulty in walking, and wearing sh…

An extraosseous or soft tissue chondroma is a rare, benign cartilaginous tumour characterised by the formation of mature hyaline cartilage. The majority of osseous chondromas are located within the medullary cavity of long bones. Soft tissue chondromas are extremely rare with only five cases affecting the bladder being reported in the literature. Soft tissue chondroma of the bladder is a rare cause of lower urinary tract symptoms and abdominopelvic pain. All reported cases of soft tissue chondromas of the bladder have occurred in women in their fifth to seventh decades of life. We describe the…

Soft tissue chondroma of palate is very rare. It has never been reported in a cleft palate patient. We report a case of 22-year-old male who came with asymptomatic swelling on the palate since birth, along with complete cleft of secondary palate. He had symptoms related to cleft palate only, i.e., nasal regurgitation and speech abnormalities. Swelling was excised and the cleft palate was repaired. Histopathological examination revealed chondroma of the palate. The patient had no recurrence after 2 years of follow-up.

Chondroma of the laryngeal cartilage is a rare, benign neoplasm which can manifest as a neck mass or, if situated within the airway, as slowly progressive obstruction, hoarseness or dyspnea. The most common location for chondroma is the posterior lamina of the cricoid cartilage; the next most common locations are the thyroid, arytenoid and epiglottic cartilages. Chondroma and low-grade chondrosarcoma are difficult to distinguish from one another histologically. Although chondrosarcoma reportedly recurs, local surgical excision without radical margins and with long-term clinical follow-up is re…

RATIONALE: Cartilaginous tumors of the larynx are rare. This report describes an atypical case with chondroma of laryngeal cartilage presenting as cervical mass, which was misdiagnosed as a thyroid tumor.
PATIENT CONCERN: A 73-year-old Chinese man with a 1-month history of cervical mass. The neck color Doppler ultrasound and CT of thyroid showed a space-occupying lesion in the upper right pole of the thyroid gland.
DIAGNOSES: Chondroma of laryngeal cartilage was confirmed at the time of surgery.
INTERVENTIONS: After relevant examinations, subtotal thyroidectomy and excisional biopsy of the …

The presence of Erk-deficient T cells is not required for this chondroma formation, as it was similarly observed in the absence of T cells in a CD3ε-deficient background. In addition, adoptive transfer of bone marrow cells from Erk∆CD2-Cre mice to wild-type recipients did not cause chondroma formation, suggesting that Er …

The case of a 19-year-old female patient with a history of severe headache for several months is presented. Computed tomography (CT) as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an intracranial, space-occupying mass with no meningeal attachment, located in the left frontal lobe. The entire tumour was removed, the pathological examination revealed a chondroma. The origin of this tumour is analysed, the clinical and histological findings are described and the literature is reviewed.
