Male circumcision (MC) is a common pediatric operation and is undertaken for religious, cultural, therapeutic, and preventive reasons. Over the past two decades, MC has been investigated as a method that may reduce heterosexual acquisition of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, lower the risk of penile carcinoma, and decrease urinary tract infections in early childhood. This narrative review revisits MC by integrating embryologic and anatomic concepts with contemporary operative techniques, therapeutic indications, and proven preventive benefits across age groups. BACKGROUND: This study aimed to characterise the infant penile (coronal sulcus) microbiome and the effects of early infant male circumcision (EIMC), following a standard surgical method (Mogen Clamp) and a non-surgical alternative (ShangRing).
METHODS: We collected coronal sulcus swabs at baseline and on days 7 and 14 post-circumcision from infants assigned to receive EIMC by Mogen Clamp (n = 15) or ShangRing (n = 15), in a randomised trial in Rakai and Kakuuto, Uganda. We used 16S rRNA gene-based sequencing and broad-coverage qPCR to characterise the infant penile microbiome and assess the e

BACKGROUND: Circumcision has been found to be an effective strategy for lowering the transmission of HIV in Africa. The Luke Commission, a mobile hospital outreach program, has used this information to decrease the rate of HIV in Swaziland by performing voluntary male medical circumcisions throughout the country. During many of these circumcisions, genital medical conditions and penile abnormalities are simultaneously discovered and corrected.
PURPOSE: The goal of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of penile abnormalities discovered and treated during voluntary male medical circumcision

BACKGROUND: Recent experimental evidence has demonstrated the benefits of male circumcision for the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Studies have also shown that male circumcision is cost-effective and reduces the risk for certain ulcerative sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The epidemiology of male circumcision in the United States is poorly studied and most prior reports were limited by self-reported measures. The study objective was to describe male circumcision trends among men attending the San Francisco municipal STD clinic, and to correlate the findings wi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In 2005, 4.1 million people were infected with HIV. There is an urgent need to intensify and expand HIV prevention methods. Male circumcision is one of several potential approaches. This review summarizes recent evidence for the potential of male circumcision to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
RECENT FINDINGS: The first randomized controlled trial of adult male circumcision found a highly significant 60% reduction in HIV incidence among men in the intervention arm. Modelling this effect predicts that widespread implementation of male circumcision coul

BACKGROUND: Both religious practices and male circumcision (MC) have been associated with HIV and other sexually-transmitted infectious diseases. Most studies have been limited in size and have not adequately controlled for religion, so these relationships remain unclear.
METHODS: We evaluated relationships between MC prevalence, Muslim and Christian religion, and 7 infectious diseases using country-specific data among 118 developing countries. We used multivariate linear regression to describe associations between MC and cervical cancer incidence, and between MC and HIV prevalence among coun

BACKGROUND: Male circumcision is among the most commonly performed and clinically endorsed surgical procedures globally, deeply rooted in medical, cultural, and religious traditions. While circumcision confers well-documented health benefits such as reduced infection and inflammation, adult patients often experience variable outcomes related to anatomical variations and comorbidities, emphasizing the importance of optimizing procedural planning. METHODS: The objective of this study was to develop and internally validate prediction models for short-term postoperative complications following adu

Tanah Papua, comprising Papua and West Papua (Papua Barat), includes only 1.5% of Indonesia's total population but accounts for over 15% of the country's new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases. Overall, adult HIV prevalence in Indonesia in 2018 was 0.26%; in Papua it was nearly ten times higher at 2.3%, and almost all new infections occurred through heterosexual transmission. Being a predominantly Muslim country, male circumcision (MC) is nearly universal in Indonesia except in Papua where MC is little practiced. The Indonesian government has turned attention to World Health Organization

UNLABELLED: Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) is a global strategy for reducing female-to-male sexual transmission of HIV. Women whose partners are circumcised benefit from a reduced risk of contracting other sexually transmitted diseases; making their role in VMMC critical. The objective of our study was to identify and synthesize existing evidence related to women's role in promoting VMMC from a regional perspective. The review and selection process were guided by the Problem; Intervention; Comparison and Outcome (PICO) model, which facilitated the exclusion of irrelevant studies. T

OBJECTIVE: The benefit of male circumcision is greatest among men who are most at risk of HIV infection. Encouraging this population of men to get circumcised maximizes the benefit that can be achieved through the scale-up of circumcision programs. This paper examines how the price of circumcision affects the risk profile of men who receive a voluntary medical circumcision.
METHODS: In 2010, 1649 uncircumcised adult men in urban Malawi were interviewed and provided a voucher for a subsidized voluntary medical male circumcision, at randomly assigned prices. Clinical data were collected indicat

It is important to understand how women's sexual practices may be influenced by male circumcision (MC) as an HIV prevention effort. Women's beliefs about MC and sexual behaviour will likely influence the scale-up and uptake of medical MC. We conducted qualitative interviews with 30 sexually active women in Kisumu, Kenya. Women discussed MC related to perceived health benefits, condom use, sexual behaviour, knowledge of susceptibility to HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), circumcision preference, and influence on circumcision uptake. Respondents had a good understanding of the part

Circumcision, a surgical removal of male prepuce has existed throughout human history, and it appears it shall exist until humanity ends. During its entire existence, there have been changing reasons or indications from cultural, traditional, religious and currently medical, and it has vehemently been criticized by some individuals for different reasons and in different countries. Emergency of new diseases particularly Human Immunodeficient virus (HIV) has brought the ancient procedure back on spot light, this has come as a result of recent studies which have demonstrated that it does not only

Here we provide an up-to-date review of research that explains why uncircumcised men are at higher risk of HIV infection. The inner foreskin is a mucosal epithelium deficient in protective keratin, yet rich in HIV target cells. Soon after sexual exposure to infected mucosal secretions of a HIV-positive partner, infected T-cells from the latter form viral synapses with keratinocytes and transfer HIV to Langerhans cells via dendrites that extend to just under the surface of the inner foreskin. The Langerhans cells with internalized HIV migrate to the basal epidermis and then pass HIV on to T-cel

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Male circumcision (circumcision) reduces HIV incidence in men by 50-60%. The United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) recommends the provision of safe circumcision services in countries with high HIV and low circumcision prevalence, prioritizing 12-30 years old HIV-uninfected men. We explore how the population-level impact of circumcision varies by target age group, coverage, time-to-scale-up, level of risk compensation and circumcision of HIV infected men.
DESIGN AND METHODS: An individual-based model was fitted to the characteristics of a typical high-HI

The incidence of heterosexually transmitted HIV infection is rapidly increasing in China, which reached 44.7% among the HIV-positive patients in 2007. With a view to the reduction of HIV transmission and improvement of reproductive health in the Chinese population, this paper introduces the latest evidence obtained from the international epidemiological studies and randomized controlled clinical trials on the preventive effect of male circumcision (MC) on HIV transmission, and elucidates the cellular and molecular mechanisms of HIV transmission through the foreskin. Four studies published duri

INTRODUCTION: As part of an effort to meet ambitious male circumcision targets in Eswatini, programme implementers have increasingly focused on young males, raising questions about informed consent. Males aged 10-19 years account for more than two-thirds of those circumcised since 2008 when internationally funded circumcision campaigns began in Eswatini. The ethical guidelines of these programmes conform to international standards, requiring that informed consent or assent be obtained prior to surgery. This article examines clients' levels of circumcision-related knowledge following the assent

BACKGROUND: The United Kingdom (UK) does not have an evidence-based policy on circumcision for non-medical reasons. The aim of this systematic review is to address the question "Is non-therapeutic male circumcision (NTMC) a beneficial public health intervention for the UK?".
METHODS: A PRISMA-compliant, PROSPERO-registered, systematic review was conducted involving PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS and Cochrane databases searches for male circumcision articles to January 2024. Those rated high-quality by the Scottish Intercollegiate Grading Network (SIGN) system were included in results.
