Persistent cloaca and partial caudal duplication: a case report.

Persistent cloaca and caudal duplication are 2 rare anomalies of embryogenesis that can present with a wide variety of pelvic malformations. Here we present the rare case of a female born with both abnormalities. The infant was born with a single introitus, an imperforate anus, a didelphys uterus, a duplicated cervix and vagina, and accessory limb and coccyx. Multiple surgeries were performed to correct for the anomalies that would have otherwise had important health and lifestyle consequences for the child.

Gluteal teratoma: A rare site of extragonadal teratoma.

Extragonadal teratomas are rarely encountered in infants and children. These tumors are reported in retroperitoneum, floor of the mouth, mediastinum, craniofacial region or even in the solid organs of the body. Most of the gluteal teratomas reported in the literature are in fact, lateralized sacrococcygeal teratomas. We are reporting a case of unilateral big gluteal teratoma in a 6-year-old girl. The tumor did not have any connection with the sacrum or coccyx and was successfully removed. Histology showed well-differentiated bowel as well as fetiform structures.

Frank-ter Haar syndrome--additional findings?

Frank-ter Haar syndrome is a genetic disease that is transmitted by autosomal recessive pattern with characteristic features such as megalocornea or glaucoma, a prominent coccyx, heart defects, developmental delays, brachycephaly, a wide anterior fontanel, finger flexion deformities, full cheeks and micrognathia. Dentomaxillofacial features of this syndrome are not well documented in the literature. We present of a 21-year-old male with Frank-ter Haar syndrome and some features that may be linked with this syndrome not reported before in the literature.

Anterior sacral meningocele presenting as abdominal mass.

Anterior sacral meningocele is a rare entity. It arises from a congenital defect of the sacrum and the coccyx through which herniation of the caudal portion of the meninges and their contents occurs, forming a cyst-like structure. The cystic mass, which lies between the rectum and sacrum, produces a variety of symptoms depending on its size and contents and constitutes a diagnostic problem. A case of anterior sacral meningocele is presented, including the physical signs, differential diagnosis, and the dangers of aspiration or surgical intervention.

Presacral neurenteric cyst in an infant.

Intraspinal neurenteric cysts are rare congenital cystic lesions, formed due to displacement of elements forming the alimentary canal. We report an 11-month-old infant presenting with a soft, fluctuant and transilluminant swelling posterior to the anus since birth; the size of the swelling varied with alterations in intraspinal pressure subsequent to crying, coughing, or sneezing. MRI showed a multiloculated lesion anterior to the sacrum and coccyx. Near total excision was carried out without any worsening in the neurological status.

Preoperative Simulation of Ileal Pouch-Anal Anastomosis in Patients With Ulcerative Colitis Using a 3-Dimensional Printed Model.

BACKGROUND: During restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis for ulcerative colitis-associated colorectal cancer or dysp … om computed tomography scans. The positional relationship among the mesenteric arteries, pubis, and coccyx were evaluated. RESULT: The distance between the superior mesenteric artery root and the tip of the ileal artery was longer in the IAA group than that in the IACA group (IAA vs IACA: 26.2 ± 2.1 cm vs 20.9 ± 1.6cm). The distance from the tip of the …

PURPOSE: The minute details of the structure of the anal canal are still not well understood. The complex structural configuration of the mu … ran posterosuperiorly and attached to the "the posterior fibers" which reach the dorsal side of the coccyx. CONCLUSIONS: We defined and labeled the connective tissues between the anal canal and coccyx on the basis of their relative position to LAM. Based on a comparison of the two types of the posterior part of the anal canal, we propose that there are …

The treatment of chronic coccydynia with intrarectal manipulation: a randomized controlled study.

STUDY DESIGN: Randomized open study. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of intrarectal manual treatment of chronic coccydynia; and to determine the factors predictive of a good outcome. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: In 2 open uncontrolled studies, the success rate of intrarectal manipulation of the coccyx was around 25%. METHODS: Patients were randomized into 2 groups of 51 patients each: 1 group received three sessions of coccygeal manipulation, and the other low-power external physiotherapy. The manual treatment was guided by the findings on stress radiographs. Patients were assessed, at 1…

Minimally Invasive Open Reduction and Maintenance Technique for Anterior Sacrococcygeal Dislocation: A Case Report.

Anterior dislocation of the coccyx is rare, but it can occur due to trauma. Conservative treatment is usually performed. However, dislocation reduction may be required to control severe pain in the acute phase or to prevent chronic complications. If manual reduction fails, open reduction is required. The extent of the incision and the method used to maintain the reduction should be considered during open reduction. A 56-year-old male patient experienced a dislocation of the sacrococcygeal joint after falling backwards. Despite conservative treatment, the patient complained of persistent pain d…

[Coccygodynia disclosing Tarlov's cysts].

In a 63-year old male patient coccygodynia, initially isolated then complicated by incomplete cauda equina syndrome, could be attributed to large perineurel meningeal cysts on the sacral nerve roots. The diagnosis was suspected at computerized tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance and confirmed by sacculoradiculography. Intradural injections of corticosteroids provided lasting pain relief. Arachnoid cysts are often asymptomatic, by they may be responsible for coccygodynia and/or incomplete cauda equina syndrome. Their presence is suggested by the characteristics of the symptoms which are p

Treatment of faecal incontinence in a child with sacral agenesis: the use of biofeedback training.

The case of a 14-year-old girl is presented who was born with sacral agenesis and severe, chronic constipation not responding to laxative treatment. Biofeedback was employed in the treatment of the constipation and soiling. After six treatment sessions over four months, the constipation and soiling ceased and there was no relapse during follow-up of 12 months. Although this child had an absence of S3-S5 and the coccyx, with possible innervation abnormalities, this case illustrates that biofeedback training might be a useful adjunct to existing therapies.

Evidence for normal cum accessory neurenteric canals in a human fetus.

Multiple anomalies, including a vertebral cleft in the cervicothoracic region containing the posterior pharyngeal diverticulum, and duplication of the lower lumbar spine with absence of sacrum and coccyx, are described in a stillborn anencephalic female monster. It is postulated that vertebral division at two levels is evidence of two neurenteric canals, a caudal normal canal and a cranial accessory one. This supports the 'accessory neurenteric canal' theory for vertebral divisions in the cervicothoracic regions. Other associated defects, such as exomphalos, ectopia vesicae and craniorhachisch…

Cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome. A new familial developmental disorder.

Three sibs with a hitherto unreported syndrome are described, the main features being mental handicap, palatal defects, micrognathia, and severe costovertebral defects, involving segmentation of most ribs and fusion of their dorsal ends to the vertebral bodies. In addition one infant had hypoplasia of an elbow together with defects of sacrum and coccyx; she and one other sib had minor dental defects. The syndrome is potentially lethal in the neonatal period; one of the sibs has survived. The inheritance is probably autosomal recessive.

Excision of a rectal duplication cyst in proximity to the glomus coccygeum - An unusual cause of intraoperative bleeding: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Rectal duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies, accounting for approximately 4 % of all gastrointestinal duplication cysts. The glomus coccygeum is a vascular structure located around the tip of the coccyx. This case report details an adolescent female with a rectal duplication cyst, where incidental dissection of the glomus coccygeum during surgery resulted in unexpected blood loss. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 19-year-old female with a history of anal transposition surgery for an imperforate anus and rectoperineal fistula as a newborn presented to the clinic with a four-mon…

Descending perineal syndrome cure by deep transversus perinei ligament repair: surgical options.

Descending perineal syndrome (DPS) was described by Parks et al. as descent of the anus on straining, typically 3-4 cm below a line drawn from the coccyx to the lower end of the. DPS is associated with obstructed defecation, with increased bulging of the perineum with straining, although perineal descent can also be seen at rest. In their review, Chaudhry and Tarnay stated: "It is controversial whether surgical management is even an option for patients with DPS". The deep transversus perinei (DTP) ligaments are the suspensory ligaments of the perineal body (PB). DTP are approximately 4 cm long…

Challenging the giant: A case report on a huge sacrococcygeal chordoma and its radiological insights.

Sacral chordoma is a rare osseous tumor of malignant origin. Remnants of the notochord in the region of sacrum and coccyx is said to be the origin of these tumors. Patients generally have delayed presentation, which is responsible for larger tumor size. Early detection of sacral chordoma is therefore very important. We present a clinical case on a 56-year-old male patient who presented with chronic lower back pain for 3 years, predominantly in the sacral region. He also had occasional bouts of constipation. Diagnostic imaging modalities used encompass ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imagin…
