Working memory updating training reduces state repetitive negative thinking: Proof-of-concept for a novel cognitive control training.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a proximal risk factor implicated in the onset and maintenance of common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. Adolescence may be a key developmental window in which to target RNT and prevent the emergence of such disorders. Impairments in updating the contents of working memory are hypothesised to causally contribute to RNT, and some theorists have suggested these difficulties may be specific to the manipulation of negative information. The present study compared the effects of computerised adaptive working memory updating training (in wh

Improving the State of the Science in Global Training: Promoting the World Confederation of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies' Training Guidelines.

Advanced professional skills and activities such as psychotherapy require training. However, models and methods for training practitioners to effectively deliver cognitive-behavioural therapies (CBTs) have not been clearly articulated and/or consistently applied. To address the need for global guidance in providing training in the CBTs, the World Confederation of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies (WCCBT) recently put forward training guidelines. This State of the Science article presents the need and rationale for the WCCBT Training Guidelines and describes their assumptions and content. Suc

Changes in hippocampal functional connectivity and volume associated with cognitive improvement and decline in amnestic mild cognitive impairment following computerized cognitive training.

BACKGROUND: The hippocampus influences the outcomes of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and undergoes different changes during the cognitive decline or recovery of aMCI compared to elderly individuals with normal cognition, which may reveal disease-dependent neurodegeneration or plasticity. We first aimed to investigate the hippocampal changes associated with cognitive changes in aMCI using a combined case-control study design. METHODS: In total, 50 aMCI individuals and 50 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited in Shenyang, China, and separately randomized into training and control gr

Identification of Cognitive Training for Individuals with Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, characterised by cardinal motor features and a multitude of non-motor manifestations. Among them, cognitive impairment in PD has been recognised as a defined clinical entity, and it might lead to an increased risk of developing dementia. Consequently, the present review aimed to ascertain the available interventions for the training of cognitive abilities in persons with PD (PwPD). Methods: PRISMA guidelines were followed to select studies in the following databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Two indep

Effects of Metacognitive Training on Cognitive Insight in a Sample of Patients with Schizophrenia.

Metacognitive training (MCT) is a group intervention that addresses cognitive biases and distortions that could help maintain delusions and hallucinations in people with schizophrenia. This program has proven its effectiveness in reducing the symptoms, but its impact on cognitive insight has scarcely been investigated. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess the program's impact on cognitive insight in patients with long-term schizophrenia. A sample of 22 patients with schizophrenia was divided into two groups: one received 16 sessions of MCT (n = 11), while the other received the usual

Exercise and cognition in older adults: is there a role for resistance training programmes?

In recent years, there has been a strong interest in physical activity as a primary behavioural prevention strategy against cognitive decline. A number of large prospective cohort studies have highlighted the protective role of regular physical activity in lowering the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia. Most prospective intervention studies of exercise and cognition to date have focused on aerobic-based exercise training. These studies highlight that aerobic-based exercise training enhances both brain structure and function. However, it has been suggested that other types of exercise t

Cognition in the cockpit: assessing instructional modalities in pilot training simulations.

INTRODUCTION: Flight Simulators (FS) play a critical role in pilot training, yet the increasing use of automated modules in FS raises questions about how instructional delivery methods influence learning. This study investigates how different FS instruction modalities affect student pilots' cognitive states and performance. METHODS: A between-subjects experiment was conducted with 30 flight-school students using Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). Participants were randomly assigned to one of three instruction modalities: audio-only, text-only, or combined audio-t

Cognitive control training for children with anxiety and depression: A systematic review.

Cognitive control training has gained traction as an intervention for reducing anxiety and depression vulnerability in adults. There are, however, a limited number of studies investigating such training interventions for reducing symptomology of anxiety and depression in children and adolescents. Thus, we aimed to provide a robust review and qualitative synthesis of the available research in young people. Twelve articles met the inclusion criteria, and all were randomised control trials. Evidence of the efficacy of cognitive control training for relief of symptoms are reported separately for a

The Central Mechanisms of Resistance Training and Its Effects on Cognitive Function.

Resistance exercise is used extensively in athletic and general populations to induce neuromuscular adaptations to increase muscle size and performance. Exercise parameters such as exercise frequency, intensity, duration and modality are carefully manipulated to induce specific adaptations to the neuromuscular system. While the benefits of resistance exercise on the neuromuscular system are well documented, there is growing evidence to suggest that resistance exercise, even when performed acutely, can lead to neuroplastic changes within the central nervous system (CNS) and improve cognitive fu

Social cognition and interaction training (SCIT) for outpatients with bipolar disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with bipolar disorder show social cognition deficits during both symptomatic and euthymic phases of the illness, partially independent of other cognitive dysfunctions and current mood. Previous studies in schizophrenia have revealed that social cognition is a modifiable domain. Social cognition and interaction training (SCIT) is an 18-week, manual-based, group treatment designed to improve social functioning by way of social cognition. METHOD: 37 outpatients with DSM-IV-TR bipolar and schizoaffective disorders were randomly assigned to treatment as usual (TAU)+SCIT (n=2
