An experience with treatment of 27 patients with diverticulosis of the sigmoid colon complicated by perforation is described. 9 patients died, 18 patients recovered. Under consideration are questions of diagnosis and surgical treatment of diverticula of the sigmoid colon complicated by perforation.

Sigmoid volvulus although a common cause of large bowel obstruction in the elderly, is considered rare in the pediatric age group. We report a case of sigmoid volvulus in a 10-year-old child with mental retardation and myopathy. The various predisposing factors for sigmoid volvulus in children are discussed, and the literature on the subject is also reviewed.

This report discusses 27 patients with sigmoid volvulus treated at Jordan University Hospital (JUH) during a 15-year period. These patients represented 4.7 percent of adult patients treated for intestinal obstruction in the same period. The average age was 54.5 years, and none of the patients was institutionalized. Endometriosis is a common disease of women which occasionally causes serious symptoms in virtue of involvement of the distal large intestine. Two cases are reported, illustrating opposite ends of the spectrum of this disorder, one presenting with a complete large-bowel obstruction, and the other with periodical per-rectal bleeding. Endometriosis in these locations can closely mimic carcinoma, and from a consideration of our cases and the literature, those features which might help to distinguish one from the other are discussed. Colonic anisakiasis is rare because most cases of anisakiasis occur in the stomach. An accurate diagnosis is sometimes difficult because of the rarity and symptom nonspecificity. We should consider the possibility of colonic anisakiasis when examining patients who have a history of consuming raw fish.

A case of transverse and sigmoid-colon volvulus and a discussion of the probable mechanism of large-bowel volvulus (LBV) in children and its management is presented. A 5-year-old male with cerebral palsy presented with transverse-colon and subsequently sigmoid volvulus. Out of 34 consecutive patients presenting with volvulus of the sigmoid colon the Gezira area of The Sudan, 30 were western Sudanese farmers (age range 25-52 years) who habitually ate a single daily meal of high residue food: their colons were long and hypertrophied. CASE: An 81-year-old woman was diagnosed with sigmoid volvulus. As there were no signs of peritoneal irritation, emergency endoscopic reduction was attempted and achieved successfully. Sigmoid colectomy-open or laparoscopic-has been advocated as the treatment of sigmoid volvulus. This has a higher incidence of morbidity and mortality. We have successfully treated 2 cases of recurrent sigmoid colon volvulus with laparoscopic sigmoidopexy by extraperitonealization of the sigmoid colon.
