Evaluation of blood and tooth element status in asthma cases: a preliminary case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a common respiratory disorder; some data were present on the correlation between increased levels of trace elements and the risk of asthma development. It was aimed to evaluate the levels of 13 selected blood and tooth elements (magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, chromium, manganese, iron, copper, zinc, strontium, molybdenum, cadmium, lead, mercury) in a well-controlled asthma group and the control group. METHODS: During the study period, 17 asthma patients and 26 age and gender-matched healthy children donated shed deciduous teeth having neither decay nor filling and enrol

Real-world evidence in achondroplasia: considerations for a standardized data set.

BACKGROUND: Collection of real-world evidence (RWE) is important in achondroplasia. Development of a prospective, shared, international resource that follows the principles of findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reuse of digital assets, and that captures long-term, high-quality data, would improve understanding of the natural history of achondroplasia, quality of life, and related outcomes. METHODS: The Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) Achondroplasia Steering Committee comprises a multidisciplinary team of 17 clinical experts and 3 advocacy organization representatives. Th

Toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 is encoded by a variable genetic element.

The primary cause of toxic shock syndrome is toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1), a 22,049-dalton exotoxin. Approximately 20% of Staphylococcus aureus isolates produce TSST-1; the production of this toxin is therefore a variable genetic trait. The TSST-1 gene and its flanking sequences are found on a genetic element that is present in TSST-1-positive isolates and absent in TSST-1-negative isolates. Preliminary sequence data and Southern hybridization experiments with the cloned flanking sequences have provided evidence that the TSST-1 element is 4-7 kilobases in size. Hybridization analysis

Preliminary indications of water-quality-related trace-element signals in aquatic moss balls from a Patagonian lake.

Naturally formed aquatic moss balls from Laguna Parrillar, Chilean Patagonia, have been described as a bryological phenomenon, but their elemental composition has not been evaluated. This technical note provides an initial characterization of their whole-aggregate trace-element signal. Ninety moss balls were collected from the same shoreline section in 2022-2024, and concentrations of 17 elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Data were evaluated using univariate and multivariate analyses. Fe, Al, and Mn dominated the elemental profile, whereas Hg, Mo, and Cd

Numerical investigation of the sternoclavicular joint modeling technique for improving the surgical treatment of pectus excavatum.

It is now common to perform the Nuss procedure as a surgical treatment for pectus excavatum. As several types of detailed surgical methods exist as part of the Nuss procedure, studies are currently being conducted to verify their relative superiority via computerized biomechanical methods. However, no studies have considered the influence of sternoclavicular joints on the simulations of the Nuss procedure. Accordingly, this study aims to demonstrate the influence of these joints by comparing the clinical data with the finite element analysis data. Scenarios were set by classifying the movement

Assessing interventions to increase compliance to patching treatment in children with amblyopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Amblyopia is the most common condition affecting visual acuity in childhood. Left untreated it will not resolve itself, leading to increased risk of blindness. Occluding the good eye with a patch is a highly effective treatment if carried out before age 7 years but compliance is a major problem. This systematic review addresses the question: How effective are existing interventions at increasing compliance to patching treatment in children with amblyopia? METHODS: Electronic searches were carried out in June 2014 and updated in April 2015 to identify studies reporting primary

Noninvasive Assessment of Arterial Compliance and Lumen Pressure in Human Carotid Arteries Using Physics-Informed Neural Networks and Ultrasound Imaging: A Clinical Feasibility Study.

Arterial stiffness is an independent predictor of cardiovascular mortality, with localized compliance variations providing key insights for vascular disease assessment. In our previous studies, we implemented a PINN-based inverse approach integrating Pulse Wave Imaging (PWI) and Vector Flow Imaging (VFI) data with 1D PDEs of pulse wave propagation and was trained to minimize mismatch between measured data and physics constraints for in silico and phantom-mimicking stenotic vessels. This study evaluates the performance of the previously-reported PINN framework for noninvasive, spatially resolve

Elemental Diet as a Therapeutic Modality: A Comprehensive Review.

Elemental diets have been employed for the management of various diseases for over 50 years, with several mechanisms mediating their beneficial effects. Yet, they are underutilized due to poor palatability, access, cost, and lack of awareness regarding their clinical efficacy. Therefore, in this review, we aimed to systematically search and review the literature to summarize the formulation variability, mechanisms of action, clinical applications, and tolerability of the elemental diets in gastrointestinal diseases. While large prospective trials are lacking, elemental diets appear to exhibit

Recurrent HERV-H-mediated 3q13.2-q13.31 deletions cause a syndrome of hypotonia and motor, language, and cognitive delays.

We describe the molecular and clinical characterization of nine individuals with recurrent, 3.4-Mb, de novo deletions of 3q13.2-q13.31 detected by chromosomal microarray analysis. All individuals have hypotonia and language and motor delays; they variably express mild to moderate cognitive delays (8/9), abnormal behavior (7/9), and autism spectrum disorders (3/9). Common facial features include downslanting palpebral fissures with epicanthal folds, a slightly bulbous nose, and relative macrocephaly. Twenty-eight genes map to the deleted region, including four strong candidate genes, DRD3, ZBTB

"It's not just the hit itself": the social practice of injecting drug use among gay and bisexual men in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Injecting drug use is purportedly more common among gay and bisexual men (GBM) than the general Australian population. Approaches designed to support the wellbeing of people who inject drugs may not be effective for GBM who inject, due to divergent settings, substances, and/or symbolism. We sought to identify the critical elements shaping injecting among GBM as a social practice and the implications for health and psychosocial wellbeing. METHODS: We conducted 19 in-depth interviews with GBM in Australia with lifetime experience of injecting drug use, adopting the Frameworks Method

Getting Started with Lab Automation: Requirements, Misconceptions, and Practical Workflows.

We herein provide a practical introduction for chemists with limited prior experience in automation, highlighting requirements, frequent misconceptions and common pitfalls encountered while setting up automated workflows. Key topics include the distinction between automation and autonomy, the development and integration effort typically required, and the central role of robust data capture and handling beyond the bench. Selected literature examples illustrate how substantial benefits can already be achieved with targeted automation of key elements, before moving to more connected end-to-end pl

Development and validation of a finite element model of the superior glenoid labrum.

Pathology of the superior glenoid labrum is a common source of musculoskeletal pain and disability. One of the proposed mechanisms of injury to the labrum is superior humeral head migration, which can be seen with rotator cuff insufficiency. Due to the size, anatomical location, and complex composition of the labrum, laboratory experiments have many methodological difficulties. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a finite element model of the glenoid labrum. The model developed includes the glenoid labrum, glenoid cartilage, glenoid bone, and the humeral head cartilage. Labra
