Perception of aperiodicities in synthetically generated voices.

The purpose of this study was to investigate univariate relationships between perceived dysphonia and variation in pitch perturbation, amplitude perturbation, and additive noise. A time-domain, pitch-synchronous synthesis technique was used to generate sustained vowels varying in each of the three acoustic dimensions. A panel of trained listeners provided direct magnitude estimates of roughness in the case of the stimuli varying in pitch and amplitude perturbation, and breathiness in the case of the stimuli varying in additive noise. Very strong relationships were found between perceived rough

Augmentative communication--an approach for the severely physically handicapped person without oral speech.

Many individuals are unable to communicate, due to severe neuromuscular impairments. In the past they were assessed by the speech pathologist for their ability to produce oral speech. When the oral musculature and respiratory system were found to be too weak to support sustained phonation for speech, they did not receive further treatment. This severe dysarthria resulted in unintelligible or no useful speech. Both children and adults experienced the extreme frustration of no human communication despite, in many cases, their intact intellectual functioning. Augmentative communication offers sup

Family influences and academic success: the perceptions of individuals using AAC.

Positive family influences have a significant impact on addressing school barriers to academic success for students from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. Due to inequities and attitudes toward people with complex communication needs, positive family influences may be critical in the academic success of students using AAC. This study asked the following question of eight United States high school graduates who have used augmentative and alternative communication (AAC): How do family influences positively affect the ability of students who use AAC to succeed in the secondary academic environm

Improving real-time emotion recognition system in assistive communication technologies for disabled persons using deep learning with equilibrium algorithm.

A disability is one of the significant problems which has been introduced and leads to current problems. Disability is and continues to be a basis of frustration as it is observed as a limitation, a physical, cognitive, and mental handicap, which limits the individual's growth and involvement. Therefore, considerable effort is put into removing this type of limitation. The problems that disabled individuals face are tackled in the initiative. Disabled individuals must depend on others to meet their requirements. Machine learning (ML) is performing great work to make a smart city and provide a

Comparison of the effects of single- and multicomponent reading instructions on phonological awareness and reading skills for children with intellectual disability in Sweden.

Full social participation requires literacy. However, students with intellectual disability (ID) often face significant barriers to accessing effective and inclusive reading education. This study investigated literacy skill development in beginning readers diagnosed with mild, moderate, and severe ID in need of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The 123 participating Swedish students were assigned to one of four groups. Three groups received digital reading instructions implemented by the teachers of the students in everyday schoolwork. Two groups practiced a single-component re

The influence of classroom context on AAC device use for nonspeaking school-aged autistic children.

Purpose: Language learning, including on a speech-generating device (SGD), relies on having communication opportunities to use language. Yet, children who use SGDs do not consistently use their devices throughout the day. As a first step towards increasing device use, it is important to determine how the numerous contexts (e.g. recess, lunch, academic) that exist throughout the school day impact the frequency and type of communication opportunities that children have. Within this study, we used complex adaptive systems theory to investigate whether there were differences in how frequently nons

A novel spelling system for locked-in syndrome patients using only eye contact.

PURPOSE: We developed and evaluated a novel spelling system for patients with locked-in syndrome: patients with tetraplegia, not able to talk, and only able to blink their eyes. METHOD: A new communication grid was compared with existing non-technical communication methods for practical daily use. The means of the number of decision steps to reach a full sentence were compared testing 10 sentences relevant in daily care. These 10 sentences together encompass all letters of the alphabet. RESULTS: The new communication grid is organised alphabetically in 4 columns and 2 main rows, with each ro

Predictors for Augmentative and Alternative Communication Clinical Service Provision: Closing the Gap.

PURPOSE: At the core of the clinical services provided by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) is upholding the human right to communicate. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) modalities support communication across environments by offering temporary or permanent solutions. Barriers to AAC service provision include translation of knowledge into clinical practice, which remains problematic despite changes to AAC preservice training addressing the knowledge barrier. This study aims to understand the importance of factors impacting the provision of AAC clinical services. METHOD: From

Building Family Capacity: supporting multiple family members to implement aided Language modeling.

Family-centered capacity-building practices have been shown to benefit children and families. However, limited research explores these practices for children who use augmentative and alternative communication. This study explored an intervention to teach family members to implement an Aided Language Modeling (ALM) strategy across natural activities at home. A single case multiple probe design was used to evaluate the intervention with five family members and a girl with autism. Results showed the intervention increased family members' percentage of high-fidelity ALM strategy use and rate of AL

Curricular integration of augmentative and alternative communication for students on the autism spectrum in inclusive-oriented schools: A scoping review.

Many students with autism spectrum condition who require augmentative and alternative communication systems attend inclusive-oriented schools, where it is expected that curricula support their preferred communication methods. While augmentative and alternative communication is recognized as an evidence-based practice, its integration within inclusive-oriented school curricula remains insufficiently understood. To address this gap, a scoping review was conducted in alignment with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, examining 34 studies on augmentative
