A qualitative study of interference with communicative participation across communication disorders in adults.

PURPOSE: To explore the similarities and differences in self-reported restrictions in communicative participation across different communication disorders in community-dwelling adults. METHOD: Interviews were conducted with 44 adults representing 7 different medical conditions: spasmodic dysphonia, multiple sclerosis, stroke, stuttering, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and laryngectomy. This article represents a secondary analysis of qualitative data collected in cognitive interviews during development of the Communicative Participation Item Bank. The data were analyzed to

Prevalence and morphology of supernumerary teeth in the population of a Swiss community. Short communication.

The objective of the study was to determine the current prevalence of supernumerary teeth (PST) in the population of a Swiss community. 3,004 orthopantomograms (OPTs) routinely produced during the annual school dental examinations in the Winterthur municipality from 1990 to 2005 served as the study basis (average age 9.45 years, 1391 girls, 1613 boys, age range 6-15 years). The study found 44 supernumerary teeth, which yields a prevalence of 1.5%. The prevalence among boys was higher than among girls, with 1.1% and 0.4%, respectively. The greatest proportion of supernumerary teeth was found in

Effects of picture exchange communication system on communication and behavioral anomalies in autism.

Communication skills deficits and stereotyped behaviors are frequently found among people with pervasive developmental disabilities like autism. These communication and behavioral oddities of autism are often considered to be difficult to treat and are challenging. Picture exchange communication system (PECS) is a six-phase picture system based on applied behavior analysis and is specially designed to overcome these communication difficulties in children with autism by encouraging the child to be the communication initiator. The present paper throws light on the process of using PECS along wit

Contraceptive injections by community health workers in Uganda: a nonrandomized community trial.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the safety and quality of contraceptive injections by community-based health workers with those of clinic-based nurses in a rural African setting. METHODS: A nonrandomized community trial tested provision of injectable Depo Provera (DMPA) by community reproductive health workers and compared it with routine DPMA provision at health units in Nakasongola District, Uganda. The primary outcome measures were safety, acceptability and continuation rates. FINDINGS: A total of 945 new DMPA users were recruited by community workers, clinic-based nurses and midwives. Researchers

Community health workers support community-based participatory research ethics: lessons learned along the research-to-practice-to-community continuum.

Ethical principles of community-based participatory research (CBPR)--specifically, community engagement, mutual learning, action-reflection, and commitment to sustainability--stem from the work of Kurt Lewin and Paulo Freire. These are particularly relevant in cancer disparities research because vulnerable populations are often construed to be powerless, supposedly benefiting from programs over which they have no control. The long history of exploiting minority individuals and communities for research purposes (the U.S. Public Health Service Tuskegee Syphilis Study being the most notorious) ha

Community-level perceptions of housing services for people with opioid use disorder: a qualitative analysis of community stakeholders in the HEALing communities study.

BACKGROUND: Housing insecurity, or the inability to afford or maintain residence in a safe and quality place, is a barrier to accessing and staying in substance use treatment and/or recovery support services. There is a gap in knowledge in how housing insecurity influences substance use disorder (SUD) prevalence, and the role housing security plays in SUD treatment initiation and retention. The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) is a large multisite trial aiming to reduce overdose risk through the implementation of evidence-based interventions delivered by community coalitions to reduce overdose

Community-based hearing aid fitting model for adults in low-income communities facilitated by community health workers: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss affects more than 1.5 billion people worldwide, yet fewer than 10% of those who could benefit from hearing aids are able to access them. Barriers such as high costs, limited availability, and a critical shortage of trained professionals in low- and middle-income countries contribute to this gap, while emerging models of care-such as task-shifting to community healthcare workers (CHWs) supported by mHealth technologies-show promise in improving access, affordability, and outcomes in underserved communities. OBJECTIVE: To determine the feasibility and outcomes of a comm

Development of ICF core set to profile communicative competence in dyadic communication among adults who use communication devices in Taiwan.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop an ICF core set to profile communicative competence in dyadic communication among adults who use communication devices in Taiwan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted following the release of a manual by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on how to develop the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) core set in three phases: Preparatory Phase, Phase I, and Phase II. The Preparatory Phase helped collect and sort second-level ICF codes into a candidate list based on different perspectives, including the Systematic

Health care waste management in community-based care: experiences of community health workers in low resource communities in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: In South Africa, community health workers (CHWs) working in community-based care (CBC) programmes provide care to patients most of whom are living with HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB). Although studies have shown that the caregiving activities provided by the CHWs generate health care waste (HCW), there is limited information about the experiences of CHWs on health care waste management (HCWM) in CBC. This study explored HCWM in CBC in Durban, South Africa from the perspectives CHWs. METHODS: We used three ethnographic approaches to collect data: focus group discussions, participan

Community-acquired pneumonia.

Community-acquired pneumonia is a major global health challenge that disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, including older people, immunocompromised people, those with chronic conditions, and young children. Once considered solely an acute illness, community-acquired pneumonia is now recognised as a disease with long-term complications, including cardiovascular events, respiratory impairment, and cognitive decline. Advances, such as nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) and the broader availability of point-of-care lung ultrasound, allow for rapid pathogen detection and persona

Synkinesis and Communicative Participation.

Background: Facial palsy (FP) impacts verbal and nonverbal communication, but the effect of synkinesis on communicative ability is unknown. Objective: Among patients with nonflaccid FP, or synkinesis, is there a correlation between disease-specific quality-of-life and communicative ability or dysfunction? Methods: Retrospective study of a series of adult patients with unilateral synkinesis. Subjects were evaluated using the Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB) Short Form, Facial Clinimetric Evaluation (FaCE) scale, and Synkinesis Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ). Associations between the

Communication at the End of Life.

End-of-life patients experience physical, mental, social, and existential distress. While medical personnel provide medication and care to alleviate patients' distress, listening to and interacting with patients remains essential for understanding their psychological condition. The most important tool, though difficult to implement in practice, is end-of-life discussion (EOLD). EOLD has been shown to have positive effects on end-of-life treatment choices, achievement of patients' life goals, improvements in the quality of life of patients and their families, and the prevention of depression an

Neuroimmune Communication in the Kidney.

Recent studies have clarified the interaction between nervous systems and immunity regarding the manner in which local inflammation is regulated and systemic homeostasis is maintained. The cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP) is a neuroimmune pathway activated by vagus nerve stimulation. Following afferent vagus nerve stimulation, signals are transmitted to immune cells in the spleen, including β2-adrenergic receptor-positive CD4-positive T cells and α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor-expressing macrophages. These immune cells release the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and acetylchol

Community-Acquired Pneumonia.

Community-acquired pneumonia is one of the most common infections seen in emergency department patients. There is a wide spectrum of disease severity and viral pathogens are common. After a careful history and physical examination, chest radiographs may be the only diagnostic test required. The first step in management is risk stratification, using a validated clinical decision rule and serum lactate, followed by early antibiotics and fluid resuscitation when indicated. Antibiotics should be selected with attention to risk factors for multidrug-resistant respiratory pathogens. Broad use of pne

Speech, Voice, and Communication.

Communication changes are an important feature of Parkinson's and include both motor and nonmotor features. This chapter will cover briefly the motor features affecting speech production and voice function before focusing on the nonmotor aspects. A description of the difficulties experienced by people with Parkinson's when trying to communicate effectively is presented along with some of the assessment tools and therapists' treatment options. The idea of clinical heterogeneity of PD and subtyping patients with different communication problems is explored and suggestions are made on how this ma
