Performance of compost filtration practice for green infrastructure stormwater applications.

Urban storm water runoff poses a substantial threat of pollution to receiving surface waters. Green infrastructure, low impact development, green building ordinances, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) storm water permit compliance, and Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) implementation strategies have become national priorities; however, designers need more sustainable, low-cost solutions to meet these goals and guidelines. The objective of this study was to determine the multiple-event removal efficiency and capacity of compost filter socks (FS) and filter socks with natural

Legionella spp. in UK composts--a potential public health issue?

Over the past 5 years, a number of cases of legionellosis in Scotland have been associated with compost use; however, studies investigating sources of infection other than water systems remain limited. This study delivers the first comprehensive survey of composts commonly available in the UK for the presence of Legionella species. Twenty-two store-bought composts, one green-waste compost and one home-made compost were tested for Legionella by culture methods on BCYE-α medium, and the findings were confirmed by macrophage infectivity potentiator (mip) speciation. Twenty-two of the samples were

Compost facilities as a reservoir of Legionella pneumophila and other Legionella species.

Data on the presence of Legionellae outside the aquatic environment are scarce. Alternative ecosystems that could act as a reservoir for Legionella spp. have been investigated to identify unconventional contaminated substrates that are able to produce bioaerosols. We considered eight green waste collection sites including three composting facilities. Legionella pneumophila sg 1-15, Legionella bozemanii, Legionella cincinnatiensis, Legionella jamestowniensis, Legionella micdadei and L. oakridgensis were isolated from samples taken at six of the eight sites. The degree of contamination ranged fr…

[Effect of photosynthetic bacteria and compost on degradation of petroleum products in soil].

Addition of diesel fuel and waste engine oil to soil was found to cause biostimulation of hydrocarbon-oxidizing microorganisms. Corynebacteria constitute a large group of hydrocarbon-oxidizing microorganisms. Addition of a liquid culture of photosynthetic bacteria to soil not only facilitates degradation of petroleum products, but also stimulates growth of hydrocarbon-oxidizing microorganisms. Combined addition of photosynthetic bacteria and compost to soil polluted with petroleum products causes even a more significant increase in the count of hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria and substantially

Phosphate, magnesium containing additives and biochar regulate compost maturity and synergistically reduce odor emission in chicken manure composting: Role of physicochemical, bacterial and fungal dynamics.

This study explored the odor composition and emission in chicken manure composting process, employing chemical fixatives and biochar to mitigate odors effectively. Compost maturity, ammonia, sulfur-containing odor emissions, as well as the bacterial and fungal community structure were analyzed to assess composting performance and mechanisms. The results indicated that four malodorous substances were identified as major contributors: dimethyl disulfide (Me2S2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl sulfide (Me2S), and ammonia (NH3). Biochar (BC) augmented compost maturity by enhancing the relative abu…

Nano-hydroxyapatite enhances phosphorus availability and heavy metal stabilization during dredged sediment composting.

Early acidification during dredged sediment composting can alter phosphorus (P) availability and increase heavy metal mobility. Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) was evaluated at addition rates of 0, 50, 150 and 250 mg·kg-1 dry matter (CK, N50, N150 and N250, respectively). The minimum pH was 4.6 in CK, 5.2 in N150 and 5.5 in N250. Amended composts contained more Olsen-P and larger labile and moderately labile P pools. At maturity, N250 contained 58.4 mg·kg-1 NaHCO3-Pi and 88.7 mg·kg-1 highly labile P, compared with 24.4 and 36.6 mg·kg-1 in CK. Humic-like dissolved organic matter increased during mat…

Insights into Fe0, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4-Mediated humification and nitrogen transformation during composting.

This study evaluated Fe0, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4 as regulators of humification during composting of chicken manure (CM) and wine grape pomace (WGP). Results showed that Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 substantially enhanced humification, raising H2O2 (15-47 %) and ·OH (3-16 %) and thereby driving aromatic CC formation and hastening HA production and aromatization. Specifically, Fe2O3 upregulated hydroxylamine dehydrogenase and the nitrogenase molybdenum-iron protein. Correspondingly, nitrification and nitrogen fixation increased by 4.9 % and 6.7 %, respectively, with enrichment of key taxa (e.g., Oceanobacillus, Th…

Composting dairy cattle manure significantly reduces antibiotic-resistant bacteria with no biochar impact.

UNLABELLED: In two randomized controlled field studies, we investigated the effect of biochar-amended dairy manure composting on the concentrations and prevalence of generic and antibiotic-resistant E. coli and enterococci. Fresh dairy manure mixed with sawdust and biochar was randomly distributed into plastic reactors and composted for 6 months. Pre-compost (biochar, sawdust, fresh dairy manure), manure mixture, and final compost samples were cultured for enumeration and prevalence. While biochar and sawdust were not significant sources, fresh dairy manure was the major contributor of bacteri…

Contribution of sulfur-containing precursors to release of hydrogen sulfide in sludge composting.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production during composting can impact the environment and human health. Especially during the thermophilic phase, H2S is discharged in large quantities. However, in sludge composting, the contributions of different sulfur-containing precursors to H2S fluxes, key functional microorganisms, and key environmental parameters for reducing H2S flux remain unclear. Analysis of cysteine (Cys), methionine (Met), and sulfate (SO42-) concentrations, multiple stepwise regression analysis, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) annotation analysis of metagenomes showed …

Insight into the pathways of biochar/smectite-induced humification during chicken manure composting.

As representative organic and inorganic additives, both biochar and smectite exhibit an excellent capacity to improve humification efficiency during composting. Nevertheless, the mechanisms underlying biochar/smectite-induced compost humification have still not been fully explored from the perspective of overall organic substances. In this study, three composting treatments were performed as follows: 10 % biochar-amended composting, 10 % smectite-amended composting and natural composting without any additive. UV-visible parameters and synchronous hetero two-dimensional correlation spectra show…

Combined addition of biochar, lactic acid, and pond sediment improves green waste composting.

Composting, as an eco-friendly method to recycle green waste (GW), converts the GW into humus-like compounds. However, conventional GW composting is inefficient and generates poor-quality compost. The objective of this research was to investigate the effects of the combined additions of biochar (BC; 0, 5, and 10 %), lactic acid (LA; 0, 0.5, and 1.0 %), and pond sediment (PS; 0, 20, and 30 %) on GW composting. A treatment without additives served as the control (treatment T1). The results showed that treatment R1 (with 5 % BC, 0.5 % LA, and 20 % PS) was better than the treatments with two addit…

Acidification of manure reduces gaseous emissions and nutrient losses from subsequent composting process.

Manure acidification is recommended to minimize ammonia (NH3) emission at storage. However, the potential for acidification to mitigate NH3 emission from storage and the impact of manure acidification (pH range 5-8) on composting have been poorly studied. The effects of manure acidification at storage on the subsequent composting process, nutrient balance, gaseous emissions and product quality were assessed through an analysis of literature data and an experiment under controlled conditions. Results of the data mining showed that mineral acids, acidic salts and organic acids significantly redu…

A review of the animal disease outbreaks and biosecure animal mortality composting systems.

Despite the development of new vaccines and the application of rigorous biosecurity measures, animal diseases pose a continuing threat to animal health, food safety, national economy, and the environment. Intense livestock production, increased travel, and changing climate have increased the risk of catastrophic animal losses due to infectious diseases. In the event of an outbreak, it is essential to properly manage the infected animals to prevent the spread of diseases. The most common disposal methods used during a disease outbreak include burial, landfilling, incineration and composting. Bi…

Verification of poultry carcass composting research through application during actual avian influenza outbreaks.

An avian influenza outbreak in 2002 affected 197 poultry farms in Virginia and cost an estimated $130 million in losses and cleanup. In 2004-2005, researchers initiated a project to investigate the feasibility and practicality of in-house composting of turkey mortalities (heavy hens and toms) as a method of disposal and disease containment. Occurrences of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) in West Virginia and Virginia in 2007 provided an opportunity for first responders to verify composting as an effective carcass disposal method. Many lessons learned from these experiences have led to imp…

Facility-wide greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions from covered aerated static pile composting.

This study presents one of the first facility-wide assessments of greenhouse gas (CH4, N2O, CO2) and air pollutant (NH3, H2S, NMVOCs) emissions from a full-scale covered aerated static pile (CASP) composting facility in Napa, California. Emissions were quantified using dynamic flux chambers and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based flux curtain (CH4 only) methods during four seasonal campaigns. Facility-wide climate forcing emissions were 66,000 ± 5,000 Mg CO2-eq. yr-1 (0.55 ± 0.04 Mg CO2-eq. Mg-1 wet waste), dominated by CO2 (approximately 85%), with smaller contributions from CH4 (approximatel…

Effect of different moisture contents on hydrogen sulfide malodorous gas emission during composting.

The sulfate reduction reaction releases malodorous gases (H2S) during composting, with potential pollution risks to the environment. In this study, chicken manure (CM) with high sulfur content and beef cattle manure (BM) with low sulfur content were used to investigate the effect of control (CK) and low moisture content (LW) on sulfur metabolism. The results showed that compared to CK composting, the cumulative H2S emission of CM and BM composting decreased by 27.27% and 21.08% under LW condition, respectively. Meanwhile, the abundance of core microorganisms related to sulfur components was re…

Removal and dissipation pathway of typical fluoroquinolones in sewage sludge during aerobic composting.

To observe the effect of aeration strategies on the dissipation of fluoroquinolones (FQs) during aerobic composting and explore their dissipation pathways, 60-L composting and 0.5-L incubation experiments were carried out in this study. Three aeration strategies (windrow, static aeration, feedback aeration) were applied to remove two typical FQs (Norfloxacin (NOR) and Ofloxacin (OFL)) during the 60-L composting of sewage sludge with 5 mg kg-1 of FQs added. Then, three 0.5 L-sample groups were taken during the three phases of the 60-L composting matrixes without FQs under static aeration, and w…

Odor generation patterns during different operational composting stages of anaerobically digested sewage sludge.

This study aimed to evaluate the global patterns of odor generation and odorant composition for different operational stages of anaerobically digested sewage sludge (ADS) composting at pilot scale. To this end, gas emissions were sampled and analyzed during storage, forced aeration treatment (active phase), turning process and curing. For each operational stage, odors were monitored by measuring the odor emission rates (OER in OUE h-1 kg-1ADS) through dynamic olfactometry and computing the odor activity values (OAVs) of compounds quantified by analytical methods (i.e., GC/MS). Ammonia and vola…
