Density functional and experimental study of NO/O2 on zigzag char.

In this paper, quantum chemistry computation (density functional theory) of multi-air-staged combustion was investigated in combination with experiment. It was found that the presence of oxygen in the combustion environment has a great influence on the surface chemistry of coal char. In the reaction pathway, the ring-opening reaction happens first, and is followed by NO adsorption. Afterwards, the ring-closure reaction takes place, leaving the nitrogen atom trapped in the inner char molecule. This reaction route effectively inhibits NO formation and achieves the aim of controlling NO emissions

Limitations of quantum hardware for molecular energy estimation using VQE.

Variational quantum eigensolvers (VQEs) are among the most promising quantum algorithms for solving electronic structure problems in quantum chemistry, particularly during the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era. In this study, we investigate the capabilities and limitations of VQE algorithms implemented on current quantum hardware for determining molecular ground-state energies, focusing on the adaptive derivative-assembled pseudo-Trotter ansatz VQE (ADAPT-VQE). To address the significant computational challenges posed by molecular Hamiltonians, we explore various well known strategie

Atomic Decomposition Scheme of Noncovalent Interactions Applied to Host-Guest Assemblies.

The design of novel stimuli-responsive supramolecular systems based on host-guest chemistry implies a thorough understanding of the noncovalent interactions involved. In this regard, some computational tools enabling the extraction of the noncovalent signatures from local descriptors based on the electron density have been previously proposed. Although very useful to detect the existence of such interactions, these analyses provide only a semi-quantitative description, which represents a limitation. In this work, we present a novel computational tool based on the local atomic descriptor IGM-δg

Bridging Machine Learning and Electron Density Theory with Adaptive Real-Space Integration.

Machine learning electron densities enabled fast quantum chemistry but suffered from a fidelity gap in downstream tasks due to integration errors and unbalance on uniform grids. We introduce MARGR, an adaptive framework that refines the grid only in the critical regions. We analyze its efficiency through theory and benchmark it on molecular property calculations, demonstrating that adaptive grid refinement achieves an accuracy comparable to high-resolution uniform grids at substantially reduced computational cost.

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Approach Based on the Coupled-Cluster Downfolded Hamiltonians.

This study integrates a Hermitian coupled-cluster downfolding technique with the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) method to accurately treat both static and dynamic correlations in complex electronic systems. By calculating ground-state energies of active-space Hamiltonians via DMRG, we achieve efficient and accurate simulations of strongly correlated systems, demonstrated on molecular benchmarks including N2, benzene, porphyrin, and tetramethyleneethane. This combined approach offers a promising advancement in computational chemistry for complex chemical processes.

Ansa-methylene-substituted cobalt bis(dicarbollide) ion available via an easy click: a carbene-like mechanism.

Herein we report on the carbon-bridged derivative of the [(1,2-C2B9H11)2-3,3'-Co]- ion, accessible through a low-temperature reaction with BuLi and CH2Cl2. We propose that addition of a carbene intermediate to the cage is responsible for product formation. This mechanism is supported by computational chemistry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Moreover, the isolation of dicluster dianions interconnected via bridging carbons reveals another unique feature of this system.

N-Heterocyclic carbene catalytic 1,2-boron migrative acylation accelerated by photocatalysis.

The transformation of organoboron compounds plays an important role in synthetic chemistry, and recent advancements in boron-migration reactions have garnered considerable attention. Here, we report an unprecedented 1,2-boron migrative acylation upon photocatalysis-facilitated N-heterocyclic carbene catalysis. The design of a redox-active boronic ester substrate, serving as an excellent β-boron radical precursor, is the linchpin to the success of this chemistry. With the established protocol, a wide spectrum of β-boryl ketones has been rapidly synthesized, which could further undergo various C

Updated in-cloud secondary aerosol production in the Northern Hemisphere predicted by the Community Multiscale Air Quality modeling system.

Clouds are important physicochemical processors of atmospheric pollutants. Major contributors to secondary sulfate, clouds also provide media for the production and processing of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Sulfate and organic compounds often dominate particulate mass, and the accurate representation of their important production and loss pathways in models is necessary to effectively address the adverse health, ecosystem, and climate effects associated with elevated particulate concentrations. In this study we investigate the impacts of an extended cloud-chemistry scheme on predictions o

Enhanced Prediction of Absorption and Emission Wavelengths of Organic Compounds through Hybrid Graph Neural Network Architectures.

The prediction of absorption and emission spectra is a crucial task in chemistry and materials science, traditionally addressed with computational methods, such as density functional theory (DFT). While DFT can deliver with high accuracy, its substantial computational cost and long run times hinder its scalability for large molecular systems. In this study, we present an efficient graph neural network (GNN)-based approach for predicting optical properties. Our method combines molecular graph representations with molecular fingerprints, allowing the model to capture detailed structural and elec

Ligand-Dependent Regiodivergent Enantioselective Allylic Alkylations of α-Trifluoromethylated Ketones.

The asymmetric introduction of the CF3 unit is a powerful tool for modifying pharmacokinetic properties and slowing metabolic degradation in medicinal chemistry. A catalytic and enantioselective addition of α-CF3 enolates allows for expeditious access to functionalized chiral building blocks with CF3-containing stereogenicity. The computational studies reveal that the choice of ligand in a designed palladium-complex system regulates the regioselectivity and stereoselectivity of the asymmetric allylic alkyation of α-CF3 ketones and Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts.

Molecular basis of C-S bond cleavage in the glycyl radical enzyme isethionate sulfite-lyase.

Desulfonation of isethionate by the bacterial glycyl radical enzyme (GRE) isethionate sulfite-lyase (IslA) generates sulfite, a substrate for respiration that in turn produces the disease-associated metabolite hydrogen sulfide. Here, we present a 2.7 Å resolution X-ray structure of wild-type IslA from Bilophila wadsworthia with isethionate bound. In comparison with other GREs, alternate positioning of the active site β strands allows for distinct residue positions to contribute to substrate binding. These structural differences, combined with sequence variations, create a highly tailored activ
