Human adenovirus (HAdV) is a major cause of viral conjunctivitis. The various serotypes implicated in the causation are 3, 4, 8, 19 and 37. The present study aimed to know the circulating types of HAdV causing acute conjunctivitis in North India. A total of 23 conjunctival swabs were collected from patients with clinically suspected acute viral conjunctivitis during 2014-2015. The HAdV was implicated in the etiology in 65.2% of cases. The sequencing of representative samples using hexon gene suggests the presence of serotype 8 and 4. The serotype eight sequences showed 99%-100% similarity with

An adult great-horned owl (Bubo virginianus; GHOW) presented with a history of recurrent corneal ulceration of the right eye (OD). Findings included ulcerative superficial keratitis, proliferative conjunctivitis, and iris pigmentary changes. The ulcer was initially nonresponsive to medical therapy, but showed rapid and appropriate healing following diamond burr debridement. Proliferative conjunctivitis markedly improved following topical antiviral therapy with cidofovir 1%, interferon alpha 2B ophthalmic solutions, and oral l-lysine. Histopathologic evaluation of a conjunctival biopsy revealed

The diagnosis of acute infectious conjunctivitis can be difficult. Clinical ambiguity exists between the acute viral and bacterial as well as the allergic forms, which can confound diagnosis. Also, discrimination between viral or bacterial origins of infectious conjunctivitis based on historical, nonspecific, clinical signs and symptoms contributes to a high rate of misdiagnosis and overuse of antibiotic treatment. Therefore, in order to effectively treat acute infectious conjunctivitis, physicians must be aware of the clinical signs and symptoms and available diagnostic tests that can provide

The adenoviral conjunctivitis is one of the biggest causes of conjunctival infection in the world. Conjunctivitis causes relatively nonspecific symptoms, as hyperaemia and chemosis. Even after biomicroscopy, complex laboratory tests, such as viral culture, are necessary to identify the pathogen or its etiology. To contribute to the better understanding of the pathobiology of the adenoviral conjunctivitis, the tear fluids of patients with unilateral acute adenovirus conjunctivitis (UAAC), normal donors (control) and patients with allergic conjunctivitis were analyzed. Tear samples were collecte

BACKGROUND: Conjunctivitis remains one of the most common ocular conditions affecting paediatric and adult populations globally. South and Southeast Asia have experienced unprecedented seasonal surges in conjunctivitis cases, with tens of thousands of cases occurring over short periods, particularly during monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons.
CLASSIFICATION & PATHOPHYSIOLOGY: Conjunctivitis is classified into infectious causes (viral, bacterial, and chlamydial) and non-infectious causes (allergic, toxic, cicatricial, and immune-mediated). Viral conjunctivitis accounts for the majority of cases. A

PURPOSE: To determine the characteristics of conjunctivitis associated with human adenovirus E4 (AdV E4).
METHODS: Samples and outcomes from 500 patients with conjunctivitis were obtained from the NVC-422 randomized controlled clinical trial comparing auriclosene to placebo. Molecular typing identified 36 cases associated with AdV E4. Signs and symptoms at presentation and at the day 18 endpoint were compared with the larger cohort of 262 subjects with conjunctivitis caused by due to AdV D8. Full viral genomes of 22 AdV E4 isolates were reconstructed.
RESULTS: AdV E4 was the most frequently

In 84% of 700 consecutive cases of untreated acute conjunctivitis subjected to conjunctival cultures and scrapings, a presumptive etiologic diagnosis could be made based on standard microbiologic and cytologic criteria. Of these 583 cases, 264 were bacterial, 245 were viral, 51 were allergic, and 17 were chlamydial. In 75% of the cases, clinical impressions were consistent with laboratory findings. On the basis of these results, laboratory workup is recommended in (1) follicular conjunctivitis to differentiate viral from chlamydial processes, (2) purulent conjunctivitis to identify pathogens a

PURPOSE: To establish current opinion as to whether ophthalmologists with conjunctivitis are fit to work.
METHODS: One hundred and sixty ophthalmology units in the United Kingdom were sent a postal survey enquiring about work practices when an ophthalmologist contracts conjunctivitis.
RESULTS: One hundred and five replies were received. Twenty-nine per cent of respondents said the ophthalmologist should stay off work while 7% said he or she should continue as usual. There was no concordance as to whether viral or bacterial conjunctivitis posed a greater problem. There is evidence that ophtha

Forty children with long-lasting or recurrent conjunctivitis were included in this etiological study. It is well known that purulent conjunctivitis is mainly bacterial, with a major source of infection from Chlamydia; recently, however, a greater percentage of viral forms, with the exception of conjunctivitis without secretion, has been reported. The authors focused their attention on the clinical symptoms and on bacteriological studies of the forms of Chlamydia and Mycoplasma conjunctivitis, highlighting their marked sensitivity to antibiotics and the clinical response and recommending the im
