OBJECTIVE: To examine whether depression, intimate partner violence, and other psychosocial stressors were independently associated with effectiveness level of postpartum contraception among women who recently had an unintended birth.
METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from PRAMS (the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System) to identify women who had an unintended birth between 2012 and 2015. The effectiveness level of the contraceptive method was coded into one of five categories based on the postpartum contraceptive method that women were using: none, less effective (withdrawal,

An overview is presented of the major methods of contraception available to the sexually active adolescent. Emphasis is given to the combined birth control pill, while the literature describing absolute and relative contraindications to oral contraception is reviewed. It is noted that adolescents with chronic illness must also be evaluated for contraceptive needs. Other methods covered include the intrauterine device, barrier methods (diaphragm, condom, and vaginal contraceptives), injectable contraceptives, postcoital contraception, and methods under current investigation. The approach to eac

Modern contraceptive use has increased globally, but unmet needs persist in low- and middle-income countries. This study in Uganda aimed to examine the prevalence and factors influencing the use of short-acting reversible contraceptives (SARC) like pills and long-term methods such as intrauterine devices. Limited evidence exists on the use of SARC and long-term methods in Uganda. Data from the Africa Medical and Behavioural Sciences Organization (AMBSO) Population Health Surveillance (APHS) in Hoima and Wakiso districts were analysed. Among the 1642 women aged 15-49 years, the prevalence of mo

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether menstrual abnormalities, multiple personal behaviors and some contraceptive methods, all of which have been described as potential causes of single episodes of bacterial vaginosis (BV), are associated with recurrent bacterial vaginosis (RBV).
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective, case-controlled study performed in an urban setting. Women with RBV and matched controls were mailed a survey that included multiple questions about potential risk factors for BV. Four-to-one matching of age groups was performed, with 28 RBV cases matched to 112 controls.
RESULTS: A

OBJECTIVE: To assess the contraceptive methods used by sexually active Hispanic women living in Puerto Rico.
METHODS: From October 2016 through February 2018, 518 patients completed a self-administered questionnaire. The inclusion criteria were being over the age of 21 and having visited San Juan City Hospital or University District Hospital. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a 2-sample t test, where P < .05 was considered significant.
RESULTS: A total of 518 participants completed the questionnaire. Of the 518, 413 (81.0%) reported having used at least 1 form of con

AIMS: Idiopathic nature of male infertility disorder needs to be investigated by different horizons of molecular biology for its treatment and to device male contraceptive. Further, it can also aid in advancement of assisted reproductive technology (ART), as nowadays the failure and disquiets of ART are consistent. Herein, we have attempted to find out proteins responsible for male infertility by comparing proteome profile of sperms collected from normal control and asthenozoospermic (AS) males.
MAIN METHODS: Differential proteome profiles were studied by 2-dimensional differential gel electr

Having presented an overview of the available methods of contraception, the authors present one approach to prescribing contraceptives based on their experience. First, adolescent patients in our practice are discouraged from engaging in sexual intercourse. Abstinence is the only fail-safe method of contraception and provides benefits both emotionally and physically (i.e., prevention from sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies). If the adolescent plans to be sexually active, however, she is encouraged to select some form of hormonal contraception, namely Norplant, Depo-Provera,

Increased adolescent sexual activity in the past decade has resulted in corresponding increases in pregnancy, childbirth, and abortion, as well as a changing spectrum of sexually transmitted diseases. Contraceptive use in this age group remains limited and is subject to developmental, peer, family, and cultural influences. The most appropriate contraceptive methods may differ among adolescents when compared with older parous women based upon such factors as efficacy, availability, cost, side effects, reversibility, and the need for preplanning. This review updates changes in patterns of contra

Adolescent pregnancy, often unplanned and unwanted, has a negative impact on the physical, emotional, educational, and economic condition of the pregnant teenager. Forty percent of the one million adolescents who became pregnant in 1986 chose abortion, and, of the remainder, 61% were unmarried. Teenage mothers in greater numbers and at younger ages are opting to keep and raise their children. In 1987 over $19 billion in federal monies were expended on families begun when the mother was a teenager. The preferred approach to this problem is prevention of teenage pregnancy rather than abortion, w

Repeat pregnancy within 2 years of a previous birth or abortion occurs in approximately 35% of recently pregnant female adolescents. The majority of these pregnancies are classified as unintended with about half ending in births and the remainder in abortions. Rapid repeat pregnancy (RRP) is associated with increased maternal and neonatal morbidity and continues a cycle of economic deprivation for young women and their families. Immediately following a pregnancy, most young women report an intention to avoid pregnancy in the near future, but many change their minds or become ambivalent within

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, contraceptive use has increased substantially over the past two decades. The increased demand for wider choices of contraceptive methods has resulted in extensive research and rigorous clinical trials. This has led to improvements on existing contraceptive methods and also the development of several new, more effective and acceptable methods with fewer side effects. Thus, this article presents a review of existing literature on recent developments on existing contraceptive methods. It also reviews recently developed contraceptive methods currently in use worldwide.

The possibility of permanent sterility following use of modern contraceptive agents is a concept which causes great concern amongst members of the lay public. However, a thorough review of the literature gives a great deal of reassurance on this topic. The combined oral contraceptive pill causes slight delay, and the injectable contraceptives a moderate delay in the return of fertility following discontinuation, but there is no evidence of a greater likelihood of permanent infertility than in the normal population. The progestogen-only minipill should be risk-free, but final data are lacking.

BACKGROUND: The choice of a birth control method is influenced by sociocultural and personal factors. We explored the perceived influences in women's choice of a birth control method in five European countries (Germany, France, the UK, Romania and Sweden), where contraception is widely used.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study of 1137 randomly selected women aged 18-49 years. An anonymous, 31-item questionnaire related to birth control methods was used. Logistic regression was used to identify variables associated with partner participation in choice of a contraceptive.

Couples who use contraceptives not only protect themselves against unwanted pregnancies, but also may reduce their risk of becoming infected with a sexually transmitted disease (STD). No currently available method, however, is highly effective in protecting simultaneously against pregnancy and infection. Thus, couples who place high priority on minimizing both risks may have to use two methods. The need for contraceptive methods that provide effective protection against both pregnancy and STDs has been intensified by the HIV epidemic, but progress has been slowed by the lack of integration bet

INTRODUCTION: With the help of safer conception strategies (SCS), women with HIV (WHIV) can achieve their reproductive goals while minimizing the risk of transmission to their partners or infants. However, interpregnancy intervals of at least 24 months are recommended to optimize maternal and infant health outcomes, so postpartum WHIV need to use contraception to delay subsequent pregnancies. Understanding safer conception and family planning knowledge, attitudes, and practices among WHIV is key to tailoring family planning policy and intervention development in regions with high HIV prevalenc

This paper reports on the common experience of vaginal wetness amongst South African users of progestogen-only injectable contraceptives. The observations emerged in the course of a community-based cross-sectional household survey undertaken in a rural district of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. The purpose of the survey was to elicit self-reporting on side effects of injectable contraceptive methods. Eight hundred and forty-eight women aged 15-49 were interviewed and 22.1% reported current use of an injectable contraceptive method, either depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (Depo-Provera) or nor

This review provides an update regarding newer options in hormonal contraception that include the progestin-releasing intrauterine system, the contraceptive patch and ring, the single rod progestin-releasing implant, extended and emergency oral contraception and recent advances in hormonal male contraception. These methods represent a major advancement in this field, allowing for the development of more acceptable, safety and effective birth control regimens.

You may have experience with women patients who assume their partners are being unfaithful if they try to use condoms because that behavior could indicate they are trying to prevent potential sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). These same women may believe the same will be assumed of them if they begin to use the new female condom. If women present the device to their partners in the context of a birth control product rather than a device to prevent STDs, men might be more willing to accept it, says sexuality expert Beverly Wipple, PhD, RN, an associate professor at Rutgers State University

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension is increasing among reproductive-aged women in Bangladesh. However, the pattern of contraceptive use among this population remains unknown. We, therefore, explored the pattern of contraceptive use among reproductive-aged women with diabetes and/or hypertension in Bangladesh.
METHODS: We extracted and analysed data of 3,947 women from the 2017/18 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey. Women's pattern of contraceptive use was our outcome variable. We first classified the contraceptive using status as no method
