Cooperative interactions among individuals are ubiquitous despite the possibility of exploitation by selfish free riders. One mechanism that may promote cooperation is 'negotiation': individuals altering their behaviour in response to the behaviour of others. Negotiating individuals decide their actions through a recursive process of reciprocal observation, thereby reducing the possibility of free riding. Evolutionary games with response rules have shown that infinitely many forms of the rule can be evolutionarily stable simultaneously, unless there is variation in individual quality. This pot

In this review, I propose a new framework for the psychological origins of human cooperation that harnesses evolutionary theories about the two major problems posed by cooperation: generating and distributing benefits. Children develop skills foundational for identifying and creating opportunities for cooperation with others early: Infants and toddlers already possess basic skills to help others and share resources. Yet mechanisms that solve the free-rider problem-critical for sustaining cooperation as a viable strategy-emerge later in development and are more sensitive to the influence of soc

Animal societies vary widely in levels of cooperation and conflict, and understanding the causes of this variation is a central goal in evolutionary biology. As with other features of animal societies, relatedness, competitiveness and ecological constraints (e.g. habitat saturation and risks of dispersal) have been proposed as key factors explaining variation in cooperation and conflict. However, the exact causes remain unclear. We used the humbug damselfish (Dascyllus aruanus)-a small coral reef fish that occupies coral heads-to experimentally test the prediction from Emlen's ecological const

Insulin fibrillation poses a major challenge for protein therapeutics, yet the molecular origins of its strong pH dependence remain incompletely understood. Here we employ constant-pH molecular dynamics simulations to quantify residue-specific protonation behavior in native monomeric insulin and in fibrils of increasing size. While the native monomer exhibits largely uncoupled titration with modest pK a perturbations, conversion to the fibrillar fold induces systematic upshifts of acidic residues driven by partial desolvation and reduced dielectric screening. Upon self-association, strong elec

Biological ion channels and pores frequently exhibit dynamic, concentration-dependent adaptive assembly, yet synthetic systems that faithfully replicate this intriguing behavior remain rare. In this study, we present a novel class of tripeptide-appended macrocyclic ion channels that undergo aromatic interaction-driven adaptive transformation from unimolecular chloride channels into higher-order nanopores. At low concentrations, analogues with aromatic tripeptide-functionalized macrocycles (MC-F and MC-W) function as discrete and efficient chloride channels. Upon increasing the concentration, c

How can a small group of committed cooperators shape collective outcomes in social dilemmas? Previous studies have shown that zealots-individuals who always cooperate-can promote cooperation in prisoner's dilemmas. Yet real-world cooperation also involves multiplayer coordination problems, where their role remains less understood. Here, we examine the role of zealots in N-person stag-hunt games in both finite and infinite, well-mixed populations. We show that a minority of zealots facilitates the emergence of cooperation by lowering the barrier to coordination, but at the cost of reducing the

Historically, sport science and medicine researchers have had difficulty obtaining adequate sample sizes, limiting their ability to make accurate generalizations to populations of athletes. To move towards better and more generalizable research, sport could look to other fields of research, and draw upon collaborative approaches for performing science. These include concepts such as big teams approaches for conducting experimental research, developing data repositories centred on a holistic inter-disciplinary view of the athlete and exploring privacy preserving meta-analytic inspired concepts

BACKGROUND: Phenotyping, the comprehensive assessment of observable characteristics, is essential for advancing medical understanding and personalised healthcare. However, traditional phenotyping methods are often manual, time-intensive, and limited in scope. To address these challenges, this work introduces the TOP Framework, a software suite that leverages a structured approach. It provides tools for the formal definition of phenotypes, their organisation into ontological classes, the creation of phenotype models for disease-specific knowledge representation, and the generation of phenotype

Contemporary chatbot development is often led by teams with highly specialized technical training, leaving little space for imaginative and community-centered approaches to technology. This can limit the ability of AI systems to reflect community priorities, place-based knowledge, and diverse ways of knowing. Using RiverBot as a case study, we examine how Indigenous scholars, students, and community partners co-led the development of Relational AI by carrying Indigenous epistemologies into chatbot design, evaluation, and implementation. We argue that Indigenous leadership fundamentally transfo

People and cultures differ in the extent to which they view the world as a zero-sum environment (where one person's gain is another's loss) or a positive-sum environment (where certain actions can benefit everyone). These beliefs shape individuals' willingness to work, invest, collaborate, or show hostility toward out-groups, and accept or reject various social policies. We model dyadic interactions in a heterogeneous population where individuals biased toward a zero-sum worldview are more likely to invest in competition, while those biased toward a positive-sum worldview are more likely to in

In this study, a total of 41 experts were interviewed in two phases (2021 and 2023). The interviews were transcribed and examined with advanced machine learning models like k-mean clustering and BERT. The findings revealed five main themes: human-AI collaboration, regulatory changes, AI model development, gaming system and player engagement, and AI ethics and risks. The findings show a shift from the experimental nature of AI in 2021 to emerging patterns of terns personalized player interaction, data-driven decision-making, and predictive analytics. Challenges were detected (e.g., regulatory g

Punishment is widely recognized as an effective approach for averting from exploitation by free-riders in human society. However, punishment is costly, and thus rational individuals are unwilling to take the punishing action, resulting in the second-order free-rider problem. Recent experimental study evidences that individuals prefer conditional punishment, and their punishing decision depends on other members' punishing decisions. In this work, we thus propose a theoretical model for conditional punishment and investigate how such conditional punishment influences cooperation in the public go

Cooperation is fundamental to human societies, and one of the important paths for its emergence and maintenance is reciprocity. In prisoner's dilemma (PD) experiments, reciprocal strategies are often effective at attaining and maintaining high cooperation. In many public goods (PG) games or n-person PD experiments, however, reciprocal strategies are not successful at engendering cooperation. In the present paper, we attribute this difficulty to a coordination problem against free riding among reciprocators: Because it is difficult for the reciprocators to coordinate their behaviors against fre

Boston Scientific founder John Abele has been party to his share of groundbreaking innovations over the years. But the revolutionary advances in medical science that these breakthroughs brought about were not the efforts of one firm alone, let alone one inventor. Abele tells two fascinating stories of collaboration--one about Jack Whitehead's upending of hospitals' blood and urine testing procedures and the other about Andreas Gruentzig's success in bringing balloon catheterization into the cardiology mainstream. Both Whitehead and Gruentzig spearheaded the emergence of entirely new fields, br

PURPOSE: We investigate why clinicians experience problems interpreting implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) data when the patient is absent, and we explore how to re-introduce patients into the socio-technical setup of telemonitored interpretation practices.
METHOD: An action research study with a design interventionist perspective was conducted to investigate the telemonitoring arrangement for chronic heart patients with ICDs and to identify the nature of the collaborative practices involved in ICD data interpretation. We diagnose the main challenges involved in collaborative interp

Reciprocators who meet an uncooperative individual can respond by engaging in partner control through adjusting their behavior toward this partner accordingly, engaging in partner choice by avoiding this partner and approaching more cooperative partners, or doing both. However, few studies have explored the respective roles of partner control and choice within the same species. Here we asked whether Norway rats, who have been shown to engage in partner control in different reciprocal cooperation paradigms, also use partner choice to interact with conspecifics. Partner choice could be underpinn

Introduction Hirschsprung disease (HD) is a congenital bowel innervation disorder that involves several clinical specialties. There is an increasing interest on the topic reflected by the number of annually published items. It is therefore difficult for a single scientist to survey all published items and to gauge their scientific importance or value. Thus, tremendous efforts were made to establish sustainable parameters to evaluate scientific work within the past decades. It was the birth of scientometrics. Materials and Methods To quantify the global research activity in this field, a scient

Failing to collaborate in crisis and emergency situations will increase the vulnerability of organisations and societies towards potential disasters. This paper highlights the significance of effective collaboration at different levels in times of crises. The case of snow storm 'Alexa', which hit Jordan in December 2013, was considered for the purpose of this research. The impact of Alexa raised many questions regarding the country's preparedness and the capacity of its infrastructure to maintain critical business functions across various industry sectors. First, should people individually tak

Tackling scientific questions benefits from different points of view. Coleading a lab by two scientists may stimulate scientific discussion while also providing a different form of mentorship. Here, we share our experience in running a joint lab and discuss how this form of dual leadership contributes to collaborative science.
