Coral reef death during the 1997 Indian Ocean Dipole linked to Indonesian wildfires.

Geochemical anomalies and growth discontinuities in Porites corals from western Sumatra, Indonesia, record unanticipated reef mortality during anomalous Indian Ocean Dipole upwelling and a giant red tide in 1997. Sea surface temperature reconstructions show that although some past upwelling events have been stronger, there were no analogous episodes of coral mortality during the past 7000 years, indicating that the 1997 red tide was highly unusual. We show that iron fertilization by the 1997 Indonesian wildfires was sufficient to produce the extraordinary red tide, leading to reef death by asp

White plague disease outbreak in a coral reef at Los Roques National Park, Venezuela.

Coral diseases have been reported as a major problem affecting Caribbean coral reefs. During August 2000, a coral mortality event of White Plague Disease-II (WPD-II) was observed at Madrizqui Reef in Los Roques National Park, Venezuela. This disease was identified as the major cause of coral mortality, affecting 24% of all colonies surveyed (n = 1 439). Other diseases such as Black Band Disease (BBD), Yellow Blotch Disease (YBD), Dark Spots Disease (DSD) and White Band Disease (WBD) were also recorded, but showed a lower incidence (0.14-0.97%). Two depth intervals, D1 (5.5-6.5 m) and D2 (9-9.5…

Pre-existing seawater drives CO2 sources in reef-building coral habitats-a case study in Dongshan coral nature reserve, China.

In reef-building coral habitats, the balance of community organic and inorganic carbon metabolisms can either create an oceanic sink or source of atmospheric CO2. However, researchers often overlook how pre-existing seawater-oceanic water that may be out of equilibrium with atmospheric CO2 before entering the reef system-affects reef system carbon pattern assessments. This study shows that the Dongshan coral habitat acts as an atmospheric CO2 source during our observations in the summers of 2022 and 2024. Through quantitative analysis of CO2 source drivers, we found that this primarily results

Results showed that microbial composition diverged significantly between near-coral reefs and off-coral reef zones. Although alpha diversity remained relatively stable, characteristic coral reef amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) showed clear state-associated variation across reef biogeomorphic states. The role of macroalgae in modulating coral calcification: Mixed species responses in a changing reef environment.

The ever increasing dominance of macroalgae on coral reefs is posing new challenges for coral growth and reef resilience. As a part of the continuous coral community monitoring program in Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve (GoMBR) in India, we observed that a few species of macroalgae were persistent throughout the year and remained in physical contact with corals. The effects of such competitive macroalgal interaction on the functional traits of corals are least understood. A series of insitu experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of three macroalgal species on the calcific…

Hurricane Irma Linked to Coral Skeletal Density Shifts on the Florida Keys Reef Tract.

Coral reefs are at risk due to various global and local anthropogenic stressors that impact the health of reef ecosystems worldwide. The most recent climate models predict that climate change will increase the frequency and intensity of tropical storms. This increased storm occurrence and strength will likely compromise coral reef structures and habitats for reef-dwelling organisms, including across the Florida Keys Reef Tract (FKRT), the most extensive tropical reef system along the US coast. While several recent studies reveal the chronic impacts of tropical storms on corals, relatively litt…

Coral Gardens Reef, Belize: An Acropora spp. refugium under threat in a warming world.

Live coral cover has declined precipitously on Caribbean reefs in recent decades. Acropora cervicornis coral has been particularly decimated, and few Western Atlantic Acropora spp. refugia remain. Coral Gardens, Belize, was identified in 2020 as a long-term refugium for this species. This study assesses changes in live A. cervicornis coral abundance over time at Coral Gardens to monitor the stability of A. cervicornis corals, and to explore potential threats to this important refugium. Live coral cover was documented annually from 2012-2019 along five permanent transects. In situ sea-surface t

Coral Reef Aorta: Literature Review and Analysis of the Published Cases in the Last 20 Years.

BACKGROUND: Coral reef aorta (CRA) is defined by the presence of heavily calcified exophytic plaques that protrude into the aortic lumen. However, the exact causes and development of this condition are still not fully understood. When the aortic branches are affected, it can result in various symptoms. Despite ongoing research, there is currently no established consensus on the best treatment for CRA. This review aims to examine the latest findings regarding the clinical presentation and approach to treating patients with CRA. METHODS: We conducted a systematic electronic search of the litera

Antibiotic Activity Altered by Competitive Interactions Between Two Coral Reef-Associated Bacteria.

Microbes produce natural products that mediate interactions with each other and with their environments, representing a potential source of antibiotics for human use. The biosynthesis of some antibiotics whose constitutive production otherwise remains low has been shown to be induced by competing microbes. Competition among macroorganism hosts may further influence the metabolic outputs of members of their microbiomes, especially near host surfaces where hosts and microbial symbionts come into close contact. At multiple field sites in Fiji, we collected matched samples of corals and algae that

Case Report: Coral Reef Pathogen Aspergillus sydowii Causing Black Grain Mycetoma.

Mycetoma is an infrequent subcutaneous infection caused by true fungi (eumycetoma) or aerobic actinomycetes (actinomycetoma). We report the case of a 62-year-old man with eumycetoma involving the left foot and ankle. Skin biopsy revealed black-brown grains, and in culture, a white colony fungus grew at day 8. Molecular sequencing using ITS1-ITS4 primers identified the species as Aspergillus sydowii. The patient was treated with itraconazole 200 mg twice daily and terbinafine 250 mg daily for 8 months, with complete response and no recurrence after 2.5 years of follow-up. Aspergillus sydowii is

Responses of coral reef fishes to past climate changes are related to life-history traits.

Coral reefs and their associated fauna are largely impacted by ongoing climate change. Unravelling species responses to past climatic variations might provide clues on the consequence of ongoing changes. Here, we tested the relationship between changes in sea surface temperature and sea levels during the Quaternary and present-day distributions of coral reef fish species. We investigated whether species-specific responses are associated with life-history traits. We collected a database of coral reef fish distribution together with life-history traits for the Indo-Pacific Ocean. We ran species …

Hidden contaminants in a coral paradise: fate, transport, source apportionment, and toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the coral reef ecosystems of the Lakshadweep archipelago.

This study examined the environmental fate, source apportionment, and associated ecological and human health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the coral reef ecosystems of four inhabited islands in the Lakshadweep Archipelago (Kadmat, Kiltan, Kalpeni, and Minicoy). Water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediments were collected from reef lagoons during April 2025 and analysed for 16 PAHs congeners designated as priority by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). PAHs were in the range of 20.9-240 ng/L in the dissolved phase, 146-356 ng/L in the SPM,

Benthic baselines of the Groote Archipelago's key reefs in the wake of mass coral bleaching and Tropical Cyclone Megan.

Coral reefs around the world are experiencing increasingly frequent and intense stress events, leading to benthic phase shifts. The ecological consequences of this are often profound and lasting, necessitating the development of both effective and regionally specific conservation strategies. Actualising positive conservational outcomes require managers to first gain insight into the present ecosystem diversity and structure; yet, in Groote Eylandt, a remote reef and largest island in the Gulf of Carpentaria off the northern end of Australia, this has not occurred. The Traditional Owners of Gro…

Microorganisms uniquely capture and predict stony coral tissue loss disease and hurricane disturbance impacts on US Virgin Island reefs.

Coral reef ecosystems are now commonly affected by major climate and disease disturbances. Disturbance impacts are typically recorded using reef benthic cover, but this may be less reflective of other ecosystem processes. To explore the potential for reef water-based disturbance indicators, we conducted a 7-year time series on US Virgin Island reefs where we examined benthic cover and reef water nutrients and microorganisms from 2016 to 2022, which included two major disturbances: hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 and the stony coral tissue loss disease outbreak starting in 2020. The disease o

Remobilized volcanogenic sediments boost photophysiological activity in three symbiotic reef-building coral species.

Coral reefs that surround volcanic islands are continually influenced by run-off carrying remobilized volcanogenic sediments. Although unaltered volcanic ash is known to supply trace metals that enhance coral holobiont productivity, the impacts of long-term exposure to weathered tephra, a far more likely scenario in island settings, are less understood. To assess possible effects of tephra exposure on coral physiology, we conducted controlled culture experiments with three scleractinian corals (Stylophora pistillata, Turbinaria reniformis and Pocillopora damicornis) exposed to weekly additions…

Boat noise alters behaviour of two coral reef macroinvertebrates, Lambis lambis and Tridacna maxima.

Boat noise has been shown to distract and cause harm to many marine organisms. Most of the study effort has focused on fish & marine mammals, even though invertebrates represent over 92 % of all marine life. The few studies conducted on invertebrates have demonstrated clear negative effects of anthropogenic noise pollution. The small giant clam Tridacna maxima and the spider conch Lambis lambis are two invertebrate species which play key roles in coral reef ecosystems, and are little studied for the effects of noise disturbance. T. maxima functions as prey for many fish species, contributes up

Treatment of coral reef aorta with open surgical endarterectomy - case report of a unique clinical entity.

INTRODUCTION: Coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare clinical entity characterised by hard, protruding calcifications in the juxta and supra-renal aorta, which cause haemodynamically significant stenosis of the aorta and its branches. We are presenting a case report of a 65-year-old female patient with bilateral 30-meter claudication on both lower extremities and a haemodynamically significant stenosis of the left renal artery. CASE REPORT: The patient underwent computed tomography angiography (CTAG) of the abdominal aorta and lower extremities. CTAG revealed severe abdominal aortic wall calcificat
