Emotional Intelligence in Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum.

People with agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) with normal general intelligence have deficits in complex cognitive processing, as well as in social cognition. It is uncertain the extent to which impoverished processing of emotions may contribute to social processing deficiencies. We used the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test to clarify the nature of emotional intelligence in 16 adults with AgCC. As hypothesized, persons with AgCC exhibited greater disparities from norms on tests involving more socially complex aspects of emotions. The AgCC group did not differ from norms on …

The Contribution of the Corpus Callosum to Language Lateralization.

UNLABELLED: The development of hemispheric lateralization for language is poorly understood. In one hypothesis, early asymmetric gene expression assigns language to the left hemisphere. In an alternate view, language is represented a priori in both hemispheres and lateralization emerges via cross-hemispheric communication through the corpus callosum. To address this second hypothesis, we capitalized on the high temporal and spatial resolution of magnetoencephalographic imaging to measure cortical activity during language processing, speech preparation, and speech execution in 25 participants w…

Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum and Generalized Epilepsy.

The corpus callosum is the main band of interhemispheric axonal fibers in the human brain. Corpus callosum agenesis has widely varying symptoms, mainly associated with epilepsy, cognitive failure, and different neuropsychiatric disorders. Our case of corpus callosum agenesis includes eyelid myoclonia with absences. In the literature, there is no reported case of this combination. We report this case because it is rare, and relevant for the understanding of interhemispheric communications, based on our electrophysiological findings.

Tractography of the corpus callosum in Huntington's disease.

White matter abnormalities have been shown in presymptomatic and symptomatic Huntington's disease (HD) subjects using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) methods. The largest white matter tract, the corpus callosum (CC), has been shown to be particularly vulnerable; however, little work has been done to investigate the regional specificity of tract abnormalities in the CC. Thus, this study examined the major callosal tracts by applying DTI-based tractography. Using TrackVis, a previously defined region of interest tractography method parcellating CC into seven m…

Role of the corpus callosum in functional connectivity.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Regional cerebral blood flow fluctuates synchronously in corresponding brain regions between the hemispheres. This synchrony implies neuronal connections between brain regions. The synchrony of blood flow changes is defined operationally as functional connectivity. Our purpose was to measure functional connectivity in patients with corpus callosal agenesis, in whom the interhemispheric connectivity is hypothetically diminished. METHODS: In three patients with agenesis of the corpus callosum, functional MR imaging was performed while patients performed text-listening an…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum, camptodactyly and obesity.

We report a 16-year-old girl with agenesis of the corpus callosum, congenital heart disease (ventricular septal defect and abnormal venous return), 5th digit camptodactyly and obesity, born to first cousin Italian parents. Although this child shares features with acrocallosal syndrome and Camera-Marugo-Cohen syndrome, we think that this combination of anomalies allows the delineation of a new MCA/MR syndrome, possibly recessively inherited.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum in a mother and son.

Most reported familial cases of agenesis of the corpus callosum have followed either an autosomal recessive or an X-linked recessive pattern of inheritance. To the best of our knowledge, there is only one previous report of a family showing clear-cut autosomal dominant inheritance. We present the second such family, among whom a mother and her son had moderately severe coordination problems and low-normal intelligence. We suggest that agenesis of the corpus callosum, when transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait, is clinically characterized by a relatively milder phenotype than that occurrin…

Size of the corpus callosum in cerebral palsy.

It has been suggested that the size of the corpus callosum may have diagnostic significance in cerebral palsy, although this relationship is incompletely defined. Ninety-one patients with cerebral palsy had been studied by magnetic resonance imaging in the 5-year period from 1990 to 1994. Fifty-seven of these 91 patients had a technically appropriate midsagittal magnetic resonance image for quantitative morphometric analysis. The ratio of the area of the corpus callosum to the area of the supratentorial brain was compared to published age- and gender-specific norms. Imaging findings were corre…

[Cognitive functions in agenesis of the corpus callosum].

Four patients with agenesis of the corpus callosum diagnosed through neuroradiologic tests has been studied, from the upper cerebral functions point of view. Three had consulted because of seizure, and the other because of cerebellar hemorrhage. Multiple fields of the cognitive functions were examined and the presence of an interhemispheric disconnection syndrome was investigated. All tests were absolutely normal in the four patients. We discuss clinical and radiologic aspects as well as other associated malformations.

Developmental abnormalities of the corpus callosum in schizophrenia.

Magnetic resonance imaging was used to evaluate neuroanatomical and neuropathologic abnormalities in a consecutive series of 140 patients with schizophrenia for comparison with normal controls. Partial agenesis of the corpus callosum, a rare neurodevelopmental abnormality, was found in two patients, one of whom also had a callosal lipoma. Evidence is presented suggesting that this finding represents an increased prevalence of partial agenesis in schizophrenia. The corpus callosum develops embryologically in intimate relationship to the hippocampal formation, fornix, septum pellucidum, and cing…

The corpus callosum and cerebral speech lateralization.

In order to specify the callosal involvement in the establishment of cerebral lateralization, a dichotic listening task was administered to six subjects with congenital absence of the corpus callosum, two callosotomized patients, and two hemispherectomized patients. The acallosal subjects were also compared to six subjects matched for age, sex, and hand dominance as well as to six subjects also matched for IQ. Our findings indicate that language functions, as assessed by dichotic listening performance, are more strongly lateralized in callosal agenesis subjects than in IQ-matched normal contro…

[Ultrasonic diagnosis of agenesis of the corpus callosum].

Agenesis of the corpus callosum may be diagnosed successfully in vivo when sonograms demonstrate absence of corpus callosum, absence of pericallosal and cingulate sulci, wide interhemispheric fissure, small laterally positioned frontal horns with concave lateral borders. Two cases of corpus callosum agenesis were diagnosed in early infancy by ultrasound. Ultrasonographic anatomy of the corpus callosum and characteristic ultrasound features and neurological findings of agenesis are described.

Prenatal diagnosis of agenesis of the corpus callosum.

The prenatal sonographic findings in seven cases of agenesis of the corpus callosum (AGCC) are reported. Findings that suggest AGCC on standard transverse views of the fetal cranium are emphasized. All seven cases demonstrated ventricular abnormalities including four fetuses (57%) who demonstrated laterally displaced lateral ventricles and/or disproportionate enlargement of the occipital horns. Two additional fetuses demonstrated a large midline fluid collection, representing a dilated third ventricle. The remaining case demonstrated atypical findings of a septated periventricular cystic mass.…

Normal and abnormal morphology of the corpus callosum.

We studied the normal and abnormal morphology of the corpus callosum in 450 midline sagittal magnetic resonance scans. Clinical information was required to differentiate acquired and congenital defects. Four forms of congenital anomalies were observed: focal attenuations, cysts, partial agenesis, and complete agenesis. Acquired changes resulted from hydrocephalus, white matter diseases, vascular accidents, tumor, and trauma.

Sonographic recognition of agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum may be diagnosed successfully in vivo when sonograms demonstrate absence of corpus callosum; absence of pericallosal and cingulate sulci; "sunburst" pattern of sulci along the medial surface of the hemisphere; wide interhemispheric fissure; elevation of the third ventricle; small, laterally positioned frontal horns with concave medial borders; large, laterally positioned and inverted cingulate gyri; and Probst lateral callosal bundles. Comparison of necropsy specimens with sonograms from eight patients with callosal agenesis illustrates the anatomic basis for th…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum and macrocephaly in siblings.

A brother and sister with developmental delay, relative macrocephaly and agenesis of the corpus callosum are described. The brother also had unilateral cerebellar hypoplasia and malrotation of the large bowel. Published cases of familial agenesis of the corpus callosum are reviewed and the value of ultrasonography in demonstrating agenesis of the corpus callosum in the neonate is emphasised.
