Outpatient benzodiazepine utilization in Croatia: drug use or misuse.

Background Benzodiazepines are commonly prescribed medications, especially among elderly, despite known risks and guidelines focused on short term usage. There is an increased trend of benzodiazepine consumption in Croatia. Consumption of anxiolytics in 2015 and 2016 in Croatia can almost entirely be ascribed to benzodiazepines, with diazepam being the most commonly prescribed drug, followed by alprazolam. Objective The aim of this study was to examine benzodiazepine utilization habits among the Croatian population. Setting This study was conducted on the national level, based on digital presc

Epidemic spread of OXA-48 beta-lactamase in Croatia.

PURPOSE: A dramatic increase in OXA-48 β-lactamase was observed recently not only in large hospital centres, but also in smaller suburban hospital centres in geographic areas bordering Croatia. The aim of the study was to analyse the epidemiology, the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and the routes of spread of OXA-48 carbapenemase in Croatia. METHODS: Carbapenemase and other β-lactamase and fluoroquinolone resistance genes were detected by PCR and sequencing. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed on five representative isolates. The isolates were genotyped by PFGE. RESULTS: Forty-e

Genetic analysis of bovine respiratory syncytial virus in Croatia.

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) represents an important causative agent of respiratory tract disease in cattle. This study describes the genetic diversity of BRSV strains detected in beef cattle herds in Croatia during four consecutive years, from the end of 2011 to April 2016. Genetic diversity of circulating Croatian strains is reflected in their clustering within three different genetic subgroups. Analysis of representative BRSV G gene sequences revealed that infections in Croatia were caused by BRSV strains belonging to two new subgroups (VII and VIII identified herein for the fi

Large Anthrax Outbreak in a New Locality in Croatia, 2022.

Bacillus anthracis is a well-known zoonotic pathogen that can cause disease in both animals and humans. Moreover, it has a high bioterrorism potential as its lethal spores are resistant to inactivation, are easy to produce in large quantities, and are easily spread over large areas. Anthrax cases occur in different parts of the world, including most European countries. Specific areas of Croatia are long known as anthrax districts, but with sporadically reported cases over the years. Here, we present a major outbreak of animal and human anthrax in the region of Lonjsko Polje in Croatia, a regio

Determination of cystatin C reference interval for children in Croatia.

INTRODUCTION: Cystatin C is considered an early marker of kidney damage. The aim was to determine the reference interval in children since this information was not available from the test manufacturer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Included were children aged 0 to 18 years undergoing routine check without history of any renal disease. Cystatin C was measured by the immunoturbidimetric method, and creatinine by the enzymatic method on a Cobas c501 analyzer (Roche Diagnostics, Manheim, Germany). Reference intervals were determined according to the CLSI C28-A3 guidelines using a robust method and a non

Hepatitis E Virus in Croatia in the "One-Health" Context.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the most common cause of viral hepatitis globally. The first human case of autochthonous HEV infection in Croatia was reported in 2012, with the undefined zoonotic transmission of HEV genotype 3. This narrative review comprehensively addresses the current knowledge on the HEV epidemiology in humans and animals in Croatia. Published studies showed the presence of HEV antibodies in different population groups, such as chronic patients, healthcare professionals, voluntary blood donors and professionally exposed and pregnant women. The highest seroprevalence in humans wa

Prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the interior of Croatia: the Baranja region.

Metabolic syndrome (MS), a constellation of metabolic risk factors associated with development of cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 diabetes (T2D), has emerged as a public health problem of enormous proportions in developed and developing countries. We have reported previously its prevalence in several island populations of the Eastern Adriatic coast of Croatia. In spite of leading a relatively traditional life style pattern including adherence to a Mediterranean diet, the prevalence of MS in these populations is high and comparable to that in developed nations. However, data on prevalence of
