Translation and Cross-Cultural Adaptation of the Newcastle Laryngeal Hypersensitivity Questionnaire to Brazilian Portuguese.

OBJECTIVE: To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Newcastle Laryngeal Hypersensitivity Questionnaire (LHQ) to the Brazilian Portuguese language. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation procedures were performed in five stages: translation, synthesis, back-translation, committee review, and pretest performance. RESULTS: At the end of the first four stages, a questionnaire was produced in Brazilian Portuguese, known as the Questionário Newcastle de Hipersensibilidade Laríngea (LHQ-Br). Cross-cultural variations in the prevalence and presentation of anxiety disorders.

Considerable cross-cultural variation exists in the prevalence and presentation of the anxiety disorders as defined by the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Researchers debate whether this variation represents cultural differences in the phenomenology of universal disorders or the existence of unique culturally constructed disorders. This article reviews recent literature on the prevalence and presentation of five anxiety disorders: generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, specific phobia and post-traumatic stress disorder, both across count

[Assisted dying from an international perspective and the debate in Germany].

The article provides an overview of the legal, political, and social framework conditions and developments relating to euthanasia in selected countries. It has been demonstrated that the practice of euthanasia was initially subject to certain narrowly defined conditions (e.g., incurable or terminal illnesses) in many countries and was expanded within a relatively short period of time, both in terms of legal access requirements and practical application. In countries such as the Netherlands and Canada, active euthanasia was also permitted from the outset and accounts for the vast majority of do

Cross-Cultural Influences on the Association Between Rumination and Psychopathology: A Systematic Review.

Rumination is a transdiagnostic process associated with psychopathology. While culture shapes cognitive and emotion processing, cultural influences on rumination remain unclear. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to examine cultural differences in the association between rumination and psychopathology. To address this aim, we conducted a literature search (May 2024), which identified 24 eligible studies. We conducted an exploratory meta-analysis examining whether cultural group moderated the association between rumination and psychopathology. First, we found cultural differences in the as

Cross-cultural validation of the COVID-19 peritraumatic distress index (CPDI) among Spanish and Peruvian populations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant psychological impact worldwide. The COVID-19 Peritraumatic Distress Index (CPDI) is widely used to assess psychological stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although CPDI has been validated in Peru and Spain, no cross-cultural validation studies have been conducted. As an exploratory aim, differences in CPDI factorial scores between the most prevalent medical conditions in the two samples (arterial hypertension, respiratory diseases and anxious-depressive disorders) from a general population of Peru and Spain were investigated. We conducted secondary

Postnatal care from an international perspective.

The postnatal period, defined as beginning with birth and ending after six weeks, is a time of major adaptation at all levels physically, emotionally, socially and psychologically. In the United Kingdom (UK), we put a lot of emphasis on birth preparation and how to look after yourself optimally before the birth, but once the new baby has arrived there is little support or emphasis on self-care. The focus after childbirth is primarily on the baby, with not much thought given to the mother, who is usually discharged from midwifery care on day 10, and whose partner is often back at work after a w

Improving Cross-cultural "Mind-reading" with Electrical Brain Stimulation.

A cross-cultural disadvantage exists when inferring the mental state of others, which may be detrimental for individuals acting in an increasingly globalized world. The dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) is a key hub of the social brain involved in ToM. We explored whether facilitation of dmPFC function by focal high-definition tDCS can improve cross-cultural mind-reading. 52 (26 F/M) Singaporeans performed the Caucasian version of the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) and received HD-tDCS to either the dmPFC or a control site (right temporoparietal junction, rTPJ) in sham-controlled

Are comparisons of mental disorders between Chinese and German students possible? An examination of measurement invariance for the PHQ-15, PHQ-9 and GAD-7.

BACKGROUND: The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) is one of the most commonly used instruments to assess mental disorders. However, research on its cross-cultural measurement invariance is not yet sufficient. This study examined the measurement invariance of the Chinese and German versions of the PHQ's somatic symptom severity scale (PHQ-15), depressive symptom severity scale (PHQ-9) and seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scale as a prerequisite for their use in cross-cultural comparisons. METHODS: We used online data collected from groups of Chinese students in China (n = 413) …

[Risk of breast cancer].

The factors that influence the risk of breast cancer are vitally important when collecting information on woman particularly at risk from cancer for screening and for advisory care in breast clinics. On the basis of the experience gathered over the last 150 years (since Rigoni-Stern in 1842), these should be divided up into I. confirmed (carcinoma of the breast, mastopathy with cytological atypia, women whose mother and sisters already had breast cancer), II. probable (childlessness, late first birth, miscarriage, early menarche and late menopause, overweight, elevated socio-economic status),

Cross-cultural adaptation of the Brazilian version of the Voice Symptom Scale: VoiSS.

PURPOSE: To present the cultural equivalence of the Brazilian version of the Voice Symptom Scale - VoiSS. METHODS: The questionnaire was translated into Portuguese by two Brazilian bilingual speech-language pathologists, who were informed about the purpose of this research. The back translation was performed by a third bilingual Brazilian speech-language pathologist, who was also an English teacher, and had not participated in the previous stage. After the comparison of translations, a final version of the questionnaire was produced and called Escala de Sintomas Vocais--ESV, which was adminis

Structure of Musical Dislikes: Findings From Multiple Genres and Countries.

Musical taste shapes social life and personal identity, yet research has focused mainly on why people like music, leaving the equally powerful phenomenon of musical dislikes largely unexamined. Building on recent work identifying core reasons for musical aversion, this study examined the psychological structure, genre associations, individual difference predictors, and cross-cultural variation of musical dislikes across 49 genres in Australia, China, Singapore, and the United States (N = 1078). Using network psychometrics and latent variable modeling, we identified five dimensions underlying a

Cross-cultural perspectives on patient expectations in cosmetic dermatology: A comparative analysis across countries and ethnicities.

Patient expectations in cosmetic dermatology exhibit significant variations across countries, cultures, and ethnicities, thereby reflecting individual desires, concerns, and goals. While some individuals seek aesthetic enhancements, others prioritize addressing specific skin conditions within the context of beauty norms in their respective countries. The provision of personalized and culturally sensitive care plays a crucial role in meeting these diverse expectations. Skin characteristics and concerns differ among ethnicities, influencing treatment preferences. For instance, individuals with d
