Renal cryosurgery: experimental evaluation of treatment parameters.

OBJECTIVES: Cryosurgery represents a minimally invasive alternative for the management of small or equivocal lesions of the kidney. We evaluated the relationship between ultrasonographic appearance and intrarenal temperatures and the effect of renal artery occlusion on the efficacy of the freezing process in a canine model. METHODS: Ten animals were treated with intraparenchymal cryoablative therapy with (n = 5) or without (n = 5) renal artery occlusion using a rapid freeze technique. Intrarenal temperatures were measured 1.0 cm away from the cryoprobe at various times during the freezing pro…

Labyrinthine cryosurgery for Meniere's disease--present status.

When surgery is required to control attacks of vertigo caused by Meniere's disease, total labyrinthectomy performed by the transcanal or tra … tes the vertigo and either improves or at least does not adversely affect the hearing. Labyrinthine cryosurgery has been used clinically since 1965 in an attempt to achieve this goal. The results of 225 procedures followed for 1 year or longer indicated that vertigo is controlled in 73% but not in the remaining 27%. Hearing seemed unaffected by cryosurgery. I …

Analysis of effects and indications of cryosurgery for oral mucoceles.

Cryosurgery is a recognized method for the treatment of mucoceles in the oral cavity. In this study, cryosurgery was used for mucoceles at the lip or buccal mucosa, and the effect and the indication were evaluated clinically. The subjects were patients with a clinical diagnosis of mucocele on the lip or buccal mucosa and who chose cryosurgery after procedures for both surgical excision and cryosurgery for the lesion were explained. Cryosurgery was performed with a freezing device using liquid nitrogen without local anesthesia. Twenty-four patients chose cryosurgery, including seven preschool c…

Computerized Planning of Prostate Cryosurgery and Shape Considerations.

The current study aims to explore possible relationships between various prostate shapes and the difficulty in creating a computer-based plan for cryosurgery. This research effort is a part of an ongoing study to develop computational means in order to improve cryosurgery training and education. This study uses a computerized planner-a key building block of a recently developed prototype for cryosurgery training. The quality of planning is measured by the overall defect volume, a proprietary concept which refers to undercooled areas internal to the target region and overcooled areas external t…

Treatment of earlobe keloids by surgical excision and cryosurgery.

BACKGROUND: The long-term results of keloid treatments remain poor. OBJECTIVE: To assess the long-term efficacy of a technique combining surgical excision and immediate cryosurgery in patients with ear keloids. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed between January 2001 and June 2011. All patients referred for treatment of an ear keloid and undergoing subsequent surgical excision followed by immediate freezing of the postoperative wound using cryosurgery were included. The primary end-point was the number of patients who achieved major flattening of the keloid (defined as a reduction o…

Assessment of the efficacy of cryosurgery in the treatment of granuloma faciale.

BACKGROUND: Granuloma faciale (GF) is an uncommon dermatosis of unknown pathogenesis. Multiple treatments have been proposed with varying results. We report nine cases treated successfully with cryosurgery and we review the literature. OBJECTIVES: To study the efficacy, tolerability and safety of cryosurgery techniques in the treatment of GF. METHODS: Nine immunocompetent adults with GF were treated by cryosurgery. The initiation of the therapy was preceded by a 60-day washout period in all subjects using other medication. Two different techniques were used (open-spray and contact cryo-probe…

The role of cryosurgery in palliation of tracheo-bronchial carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Carcinoma of the lung is the commonest cause of death from malignant disease in humans. At diagnosis, about 85% of patients are in an advanced stage of the disease and approximately 30% present with a tumour blocking a large bronchial lumen, causing distressing and life threatening symptoms. Early reopening and treatment of the blocked airways is required to improve symptoms and quality of life. There are a number of methods available to achieve this aim including cryotherapy, the controlled application of extreme cold. METHODS: We present a prospective study of 153 consecutive pat

Successful outcome of cryosurgery in patients with granuloma annulare.

Several therapeutic methods have been employed in the management of localized granuloma annulare (GA), with varying degrees of success. We performed a prospective trial to evaluate the efficacy, cosmetic results, and safety of cryosurgical treatment in GA. Thirty-one patients with localized GA were treated by cryosurgery, using the contact method. Nitrous oxide (-86 degrees C) or liquid nitrogen (-196 degrees C) were used as refrigerants, and were applied with closed probes; each lesion was treated with one freeze-thaw cycle of 10-60 s per session. If necessary, treatment was repeated after 20…

[Cryosurgery of condylomata acuminata gigantea--a contribution to therapy].

Two cases of condylomata acuminata gigantea treated with cryosurgery are described. A clinical and histologic differentiation from Buschke-Loewenstein's tumours, sex-specific differences, possible malignant transformations and differential diagnostic diseases are described and references are made to confusions with condyloma-like, primary carcinomas. Compared to conservative surgical treatment of condylomata acuminata gigantea, cryosurgery offers the advantage of rapid necrosis of the condylomata which are repelled without any further surgical intervention and heal without scars. Therefore we …
