In a retrospective clinical trial is compared efficacy of transscleral cryotherapy versus diode laser photocoagulation in the treatment of threshold stage 3 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in zone II-III. 40 eyes were treated with cryotherapy and 32 eyes were treated with diode laser photocoagulation. The authors present the results of treatment in 51 patients with vitreous haemorrhage in the course of diabetic retinopathy by application of a transconjunctival scleral cryoapplication. Cryotherapy was used to treat 516 patients with various degrees of dysplasia and carcinoma in situ over a 7-year period. Seventy-one percent of patients had either severe dysplasia or carcinoma in situ. In 88% of the patients treated, a single treatment session was successful in eradicating the lesion. Treatment was defined as successful when cytologic and colposcopic findings were negative 1 year after treatment. Five percent of patients were lost to follow-up. The criteria for selection of patients and possible causes of treatment failure are discussed.

Combination treatment of primary anogenital warts with subcutaneous interferon alpha 2a plus cryotherapy was no more efficacious than cryotherapy alone. Patients with primary AG warts showed no in vitro or in vivo suppression of non-specific immunity. In patients treated with interferon plus cryotherapy non-specific cellular immunity was stimulated, both in vitro and in vivo compared with patients treated with cryotherapy alone.

We present a previously undocumented complication of dystrophic calcification of the prostate after cryotherapy. An 87-year-old male presented with recurrent lower urinary tract infections and was found to have an obstructing large calcified mass in the right lobe of the prostate. Cryotherapy to 32 individual branches of the trigeminal nerve in 27 patients, who were followed up for 3 years, resulted in pain relief out-lasting return of sensation. After one year 65% of patients were pain free. In the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, cryotherapy is an easy method with similar results but lower complication rate in comparison with other peripheral methods.

Cryotherapy has been shown to reduce the unfavourable outcome in retinopathy of prematurity with stage 3 threshold disease by 50%. In a prospective study cryotherapy had a favourable outcome in 13 of 24 eyes with stage 3 threshold disease. The visual outcome, refraction, and complications of cryotherapy are discussed.
