Noninvasive Assessing Low Back Pain by a Novel Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Flexible Probe With the Aid of Cupping Protocol.

Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability worldwide, yet its quantitative and noninvasive assessment remains challenging. Considering that near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) became a promising noninvasive tool for monitoring muscle and cupping therapy could regulate muscle blood flow to relieve LBP, we attempted to incorporate cupping and hemodynamics monitoring in muscle tissue by NIRS to assess LBP. We collected 3-min NIRS recordings on 12 LBP patients and 12 healthy subjects before and after 20-min cupping. Initially, no significant hemodynamic differences were observed between …

Suction Decompression of the Carpal Tunnel.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common nerve compression syndrome that includes symptoms of numbness and tingling in the median nerve distribution. Medical cupping therapy has been used for managing a variety of medical conditions, but, to the author's knowledge, the cupping device has not been directly applied over the carpal tunnel as a form of treatment. This case report involves a 27-year-old woman who presented with symptoms of CTS in the right hand and palpatory restriction over the right carpal canal. Electrodiagnostic testing confirmed mild CTS, and neuromuscular ultrasonography reve…

Efficacy and safety of wet cupping in the treatment of neurodermatitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neurodermatitis is a chronic skin condition characterized by intense itching and skin thickening due to neurological dysfunction. Its persistent nature poses a challenge to effective treatment, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Wet cupping therapy is increasingly being used in clinics to manage neurodermatitis, so it is imperative to assess the evidence regarding its effectiveness and safety. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of wet cupping therapy in patients with neurodermatitis. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Randomized controlled trials …

Reviving ancient therapeutics in modern medicine: an immunological and biological narrative review of wet cupping in the management of Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The interwoven immunological, biological, and genetic complexity of thyroid diseases makes suitable targeted therapies particularly challenging to develop. Stemming from ancient practices, al-hijamah, or wet cupping, has achieved notable popularity in recent years, leading to unique applications in modern medicine. By grappling with the current literature that links the effects of wet cupping with the immune system in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), this narrative review aims to compose a comprehensive assessment of this adjunctive treatment based on evide

Differential diagnosis between physical maltreatment and cupping practices in a suspected child abuse case.

Physical maltreatment is one of the most common forms of child abuse. Cutaneous injuries often raise the suspicion of child maltreatment. Nevertheless, among health professionals there is still uncertainty in the evaluation of such injuries. In the literature, there are few indications about the most important factors that allow the differentiation of physical abuse findings from signs/lesions that are caused by "folk medicine practices" with similar presentations. We report the case of two brothers who were brought to the Emergency Department of a pediatric hospital by their father because ea

Cupping for psoriasis vulgaris: A protocol of systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis vulgaris (PV) is a chronic, immune-mediated dermatological disease that significantly affects the patient's health and quality of life. At present, cupping has been widely used in the treatment of psoriasis. However, the effectiveness and safety of cupping in patients with PV are still controversial. Therefore, this review aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of cupping therapy on PV. METHODS: The following databases will be searched from their inceptions to April 2020 with a language limitation of English and Chinese: Pubmed, Medline, Embase, Cochrane Central Regist…

[Fire dragon cupping for insect bite dermatitis: a case report].

This paper reports a case of insect bite dermatitis treated with fire dragon cupping. The patient presented with patchy circular erythema on the lateral aspects of both lower extremities, predominantly from the lateral aspect of the right thigh to the buttock. Slight desquamation was observed at the center of the local erythema, accompanied by swelling, induration, tenderness, increased skin temperature, and intolerable itching and burning pain. The treatment principle was to remove the pathogenic factors and detoxify, promote blood circulation and resolve erythema. Fire dragon cupping was admi

The Effect of Dry Cupping on Gastrocnemius Muscle Stiffness, Range of Motion and Pain Perception After Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness.

BACKGROUND: Cupping therapy originated in Eastern Medicine, became renowned in complementary medicine and is utilized as a therapeutic treatment in contemporary medicine for musculoskeletal issues. As with any modality, there is a question of efficacy. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effect of cupping therapy on muscle stiffness (MS), active dorsiflexion (DF) and perceived pain of the medial gastrocnemius muscle following a cupping therapy treatment. METHODS: Single cohort design included 20 physically active, healthy participants (10 women, 10 men; age: 22.9 years ± 3.35 years) compl…

Measurements of reversibility of optic disc cupping and pallor in ocular hypertension and glaucoma.

Four cases are presented of young and elderly glaucoma patients who had both surgical and medical therapy and showed reversal of cupping and pallor of the optic disc. The cupping was measured by photogrammetry and the pallor by computerized image analysis from photographs of the optic disc. Two patients showed regression of visual field loss. The optic disc and visual field changes corresponded to the changes in ocular pressures, generally showing worsening with an increase in ocular pressure. With a decrease in ocular pressure there was regression of visual field loss and a decrease in cuppin

How current Clinical Practice Guidelines for low back pain reflect Traditional Medicine in East Asian Countries: a systematic review of Clinical Practice Guidelines and systematic reviews.

ObjectivesThe aims of this study were to investigate whether there is a gap between evidence of traditional medicine (TM) interventions in East-Asian countries from the current Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) and evidence from current systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SR-MAs) and to analyze the impact of this gap on present CPGs.MethodsWe examined 5 representative TM interventions in the health care systems of East-Asian countries. We searched seven relevant databases for CPGs to identify whether core CPGs included evidence of TM interventions, and we searched 11 databases for SR-MAs t

Dry Cupping, Ischemic Compression, or Their Combination for the Treatment of Trigger Points: A Pilot Randomized Trial.

Background: Chronic neck pain (NP) attributed to myofascial pain syndrome is one of the particularly common skeletal muscle disorder associated with the hyperirritable zone in the taut band of muscle. Trigger points (TPs) are the physical interpretation of the myofascial pain syndrome. In the United States, 30%-85% of pain patients have been affected by myofascial TPs. Objectives: To reveal preliminary evidence on the clinical efficacy of ischemic compression therapy, dry cupping, and their combination on improving the TPs' pressure pain threshold (PPT), neck range of motion (NROM), and neck d

Complete unilateral vision loss and optic nerve cupping from metastatic prostate cancer to the optic canal.

A 71-year-old man, living with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer to the lymph nodes, spine and skull, presented with acute on chronic left eye vision loss. Examination revealed no-light-perception vision, a relative afferent pupillary defect and optic disc cupping. MRI brain revealed optic canal narrowing from metastatic sphenoid bone expansion and extraosseous tumour compressing the intracanalicular optic nerve. The optic disc cupping and excavation without significant pallor of the remaining neuroretinal rim was likely secondary to chronic compression of the optic nerve. The pati
